Eli Manning just told his critics to Shut Up again

djstat : 11/18/2018 4:06 pm
For the second week in a row. Say what you want, but when you commit to the run and let Barkley lead the offense, Eli still looks like a QB you can win with. Haters you can hate elsewhere this week. 17/18 231 yards and 2 TDs

Broken record:
Big Blue '56 : 11/19/2018 8:32 am : link
There has never been anything physically wrong with Eli, imv. It’s most likely between the ears, secondary to the cumulative beatings he has taken causing him to rush and make some lousy quick decisons.

Give him reasonable protection and of course a running game he’ll be good for several more seasons, assuming he wants to continue, imo
sans shell shock
fkap : 11/19/2018 8:33 am : link
Eli showed he can still play. Maybe not as good as in his prime, but good enough.

Many were saying his body was done, but for me, it was always about the mental. Give him a consistently OK OL, and he's a QB you can win with. Not his fault the OL played like shit the first half the year.

That said, there's no guarantee this OL will continue to play well, or that next year will see any improvement. the shell shock can come back in an instant.

Now has a 69% comp% for the season, which is >6% better than his previous career high.

His 6 INTs and 1.6% INT% are the best of his career. Previous low was a 2.1% INT% back in 2008 (only threw it 479 times that season!).

His passer rating now sits at 96.6 which is currently the best mark of his career.

His 7.7 ay/a is tied for the 2nd best mark of his career. The 8.1 ay/a in 2011 was the only time he exceeded it.

And on the negative side, he's set to obliterate his "record" for sacks. He's currently been sacked 36 times and the most he's been sacked in a single season is/was 39 back in 2013. He's getting sacked on 9% of his drop backs (~1 in 10) which blows away all previous seasons and his almost double his career mark.

It is popular to mock DG and his derision of analytics, but what will happen when DG actually uses the analytics that you cite above to extend Eli? The sacks just reinforce the acknowledgement by DG that the OL must be fixed. He identified that as his no. 1 priority. Dedicating another off-season of OL centric moves (FA/draft) will shore up what Reese was never able to do in the last half a decade.

I'm ok with them boosting the OL/Pass Rush
giants#1 : 11/19/2018 8:47 am : link
as priorities 1A and 1B. Personally, I view an atrocious OL as the one thing that can destroy a young QB as once you lose your pocket presence and internal clock (i.e. become shell shocked), it's hard to get it back. Whereas things like the speed of the game and throwing too many INTs are all correctable.

Also note that Eli's TD% is one of the lower #s of his career, though that's partly (largely?) due to the poor RZ play which can be attributable to the poor OL (no running game and/or pass protection). Though Eli's missed a couple easy ones to Beckham too.
Meant to add
giants#1 : 11/19/2018 8:56 am : link
that I think Eli's stats are indicative of the job Shurmur has done with the offense. When the hog mollies are mediocre, there are high % plays available to be made and he's scheming guys open.

Yesterday's only incompletion might be the best example of this as most expected a handoff or short throw to Beckham. Instead, he calls a wheel route to Barkley, which should've worked for 20+ yards.
The analytics
hassan : 11/19/2018 9:15 am : link
even though career bests, are midpack this year from an overall ratings perspective. His qbr is 25th. Not good. Just for some contrast, Ryan Fitzpatrick has a 100 qb rating.

I dont understand QBR whatsoever cause it makes little sense.

I saw Eli's QBR yesterday was 78 or 79 with only 1 incompletion which went off fingertips. HIS YPA was insane at 12.8.

But since he didnt throw for massive yards (he could have if we needed too) or a great number of TDs (he could have but the run game was working yesterday) he gets penalized for it. He played almost a perfect game. Thats why some of these advanced stats have little validity to me. Just like Eli's high QB ratings.... some of that high grade came in garbage time.
Honestly..

His comp% is 6th and his INT% is tied for 5th. Passer rating and (arguably) the most important stat ay/a are middle of the pack.

Sack% is 7th worst with most of the guys behind him "mobile" QBs that generally try and hold it longer to make plays. If he wasn't leading the league in sacks, he's probably top 10 in AY/A.

ESPN's "QBR" is as useful as PFF's ratings.

There is a lot of crap that is selectively moderated. I reported a post a year ago by Dragon. The post still sits in the archives on BBI's servers. The Moderator's response was, "I can see how you would be upset by the comment.". The comment wasn't even directed at me. It was a disgusting/hateful comment wishing that Eli would break his back. But it still stands in testament to what is tolerated on BBI.

ESPN QBR while flawed, at least contextualizes when you are compiling stats. His stat line was classic lying with statistics. Is this his best season really?

You fail to mention a pretty important stat: Eli's terrible td pct. Id wish for the old Eli who threw picks but scored a lot. We have the inverse now.

I am glad he has played well this week and pretty good last week. Lets consider the quality of opponent and if it continues against better teams then we have something.

Team is still 3-7, and he still gets paid a lot. I think the OP and some of the posters here are too easily impressed......he should at the very least be having some good games in particular against dregs like SF and TB.
that's really off-putting

Micky has always been a terrible posting, but wishing death on someone? It's FOOTBALL for crissakes! It's a silly diversion from real life where giant men in tiny pants hit each other senseless - THAT is what drives you to snicker about wanting someone dead?

many here enjoy the wins. But the tone of the OP does two things 1)imply what we saw from #10 was just a mirage earlier in the season wholly blamed on the line and 2)that two data points against terrible teams is proof positive Eli can be a consistent winning qb.

I can enjoy the wins and recognize the OP is way off in his post as well. I'm willing to see if this trend continues; quite frankly the idea of having Eli be a game manager with Barkley being the focus and throwing around 20-25 times a game is probably the best way to use him at this point which seems like the gameplan.

I did mention his TD% in a follow-up post. It wasn't highlighted in the first because it wasn't close to a career best/worst.

And when you start adding "context" to statistics, they are no longer statistics. Pure stats do not and should not include subjective measures and/or opinions. It's why some of PFFs grades (they're not stats) are so mind boggling (and I think PFF's grades are generally interesting).

stats do have to be contextualized, at least relative to peers and timeframes. While this is Eli's highest ranking in overall pure rating, he has had an overall league rank higher in the past relative to his peers. 30 TDs today does not mean the same thing as the 70s as well.

His ratings inflation is consistent with overall qb ratings going up significantly in past decade.

With 6 games to go....
dep026 : 11/19/2018 10:10 am : link
I can see Eli putting up about 11 more TDs and about 5 more INTs to go with 1300 yards more passing.

So I will go with

4250 yards
24 TDs
11 INTs

Nothing great or astounding. But people pay laugh at this... in 6 years when Eli is up for the HOF.... people will consider it a pretty good year.

Applying that type of context to stats is different than ESPN's QBR garbage which tries to adjust individual plays based on context (IIRC).

Speaking of the HOF, Eli now needs just 1 more win to guarantee a (regular season) career record of .500 or better assuming he doesn't play beyond 2018.

WTF? We are 6-20. The last 2 wins against 2 of the worst cannot be used as evidence of anything. It just isn't enough data. I thought we would win these games, I thought they would be game for Eli. The only thing that happened was that Eli played better against Tampa than I thought he would. I did not expect a 155 QB rating.

I am still thinking we should move on and start a new QB next year. Let's see what happens next week. I will get this out there right now. A win against the Eagles will mean more than Tampa and San Francisco. It will still not be enough to change anyone's mind though. The Eagles are reeling right now. The Bears...If we beat the Eagles and the Bears I will be on board with starting Eli next year.

In six years, QBs will continue to amass numbers that make seasons like this look pedestrian, just like this era of QBs is making their predecessors' numbers look pedestrian. It's fairly unlikely that it will be considered "pretty good" especially with the W/L record that's going to accompany it.
