Sunday Night Football crew weighs in on the Giants:

Britt in VA : 11/19/2018 8:50 am
Tirico: "Don't forget the Giants. It's not over in the NFC East, yet.... The Giants are showing a little life here.

Dungy: "And they're playing hard. That is the truly impressive thing to me. Long game on Monday night, and come back and play hard again today.

Harrison on Giants QB Eli Manning: "It's just amazing how Eli looks when you protect him and give him time."

This was from Tom Rock's twitter:

And I agree with Dungy....
Britt in VA : 11/19/2018 8:52 am : link
It's important to note that this team is playing hard. That's a credit to Shurmur and the players.

They could have easily packed it in at 1-7.
I'll believe it if they beat the Eagles

But they could be 2 out of the division after Sunday...

That's not going to sit well with the "Eli sucks" crowd on BBI.
It's amazing that they
Doomster : 11/19/2018 8:59 am : link
are still in it....not because they are good, but because the rest of the division is so bad....

Dallas could have very easily lost to Atlanta, and the Skins without a qb are in trouble....so yes the Giants are still in it.....and there is a possibility to win the division.....which may be the worst thing that can happen for this team....
It’s mind blowing to me
UConn4523 : 11/19/2018 9:01 am : link
that some people think the draft is all that matters. It’s not madden, we need to improve and that starts now not in the offseason.

We re all Giants fans. I wanted Darnold but am thrilled with how Eli is playing and the Giants with a game that actually matters this Sunday.

On a day where a lost Giants season a actually has life, why do you feel the need to go there.

Some of you guys come across as caring more about proving other bbi ers wrong than you do about the Giants winning.

This season has been over so many times this year...

Winning matters.
Britt in VA : 11/19/2018 9:16 am : link
Even if we don't have a miracle run to end the season, consistently winning and improving matters.
I wonder
Dr. D : 11/19/2018 9:17 am : link
if some of these fans were hoping we lose out in '11 when we lost 4 in a row, dropped to 6-6 and it looked like we weren't going anywhere. Heck, we were 7-7 the week before Christmas.

I don't think we have that kind of magic in us this year because the D doesn't have the potential to come together like the '11 D.

But how can any fan not want to see the Giants win out and maybe win a playoff game or 2?
.
Danny Kanell : 11/19/2018 9:17 am : link
All I know is, Thursday is Thanksgiving and i'm actually still excited about an upcoming Giant game. After 1-7, i'll take it.

I was there yesterday and i'm not sure how it came across on TV, but the crowd was really into it. It didn't have the feel of a 2-7 team. Pretty awesome atmosphere and Eli was great, Saquon was unbelievable and the offense was fun to watch.

I know its an EXTREME longshot but whatever. I'm gonna enjoy it. What other option is there? Fuck the draft pick.

Every year at the first sign of adversity somebody here suggests losing out.

It's as inevitable as the seasons changing, along with the trade down in the draft crowd.
If we truly wanted the highest possible draft pick
UConn4523 : 11/19/2018 9:20 am : link
I’d support it. But some of these players and coaches will be here next year and they’ve got every right to play and prepare for their jobs. Not all draft picks work out, not even top draft picks. If you think that’s the fix than you haven’t been paying attention to how the good teams stay good and how bad teams stay bad.

Fortify the locker room, find out who’s all in and move the franchise forward.
That should have said
UConn4523 : 11/19/2018 9:21 am : link
I support it for the right player (ie a Peyton or Luck).

Yeah Britt, I don't understand it. We've pissed away too many seasons since '11. I want something to cheer for. Worry about the draft in April.
Giants are #1 scoring team in the NFC East

Sad, but true.

Sad when the only other team outside of the NFC East, in the entire NFC, that we have scored more than are the Cardinals.
A big IF, but if the defense can get it together, this could be 2011
Ivan15 : 11/19/2018 9:42 am : link
again.

Players are familiar enough with the defensive scheme now, so it is time to produce.Vernon needs to step up, and they need to defend the middle of the field. That’s up to Collins and the LBs.
Just Win Baby
Rong5611 : 11/19/2018 9:44 am : link
Let's ground ourselves in reality. We beat 2 awful teams. It's good to win, but Philly is a whole different deal. They are the defending champs and a much tougher match-up for us. And, they'll be desperate for a win to stay in the race, at home.

A victory there would be the biggest one since Coughlin was fired. Not probable, but you never know.

We've got posters on here literally saying that winning and improving in the second half of this year will have no bearing whatsoever on next season.
Britt..
FatMan in Charlotte : 11/19/2018 9:51 am : link
I will say this - momentum from one year has little bearing on the next. SF is the latest testament to that, so is Jax and Buffalo.

BUT - what I think has been important is that we are continually churning out players who aren't performing, trying to improve as a team. We've not seen that in many years.

Right, but San Fran was not installing brand new offensive and defensive systems like we are. I wonder if we even have both systems fully installed yet. Learning and getting comfortable in those, and executing them consistently are very important, especially considering the reduced practice time.

It will pay dividends next year to keep executing, improving, and winning.

Play a competitive game against the Eagles, win or lose, then fine, talk about how they're playing hard, they're not completely out of this, there's some positive developing through the losses, etc.

Go out and lay another egg against the Eagles, and the vicious cycle of BBI will just swing in the opposite direction.
Kudos to Shurmer

and the Giants for playing hard and not quitting like they did last year. Last year's team straight up quit.
BUT let's not lose sight of the fact that the Giants beat a depleted 49ers team and a terrible Bucs team that benched it's starting QB half way through the game and still almost came back.
I'm all for hoping and rooting for the Giants to pull off the impossible - but the Giants winning 7 in a row is very unlikely.

arniefez : 11/19/2018 11:38 am : link
at multiple positions. Some of their starters probably aren't good enough to make any other roster in the NFL. FS and RT come to mind. They need LBs who can rush the QB more than anything else. Higher draft picks probably increase the odds of getting some.

The head coach is learning on the job in his second job and his default mode is non aggressive. The league has passed the GM by and his next idiotic move will probably be giving Collins a huge contract.

But anytime Eli plays well and the Giants win. I am a happy Giant fan.

I agree that winning is probably better for the players and culture moving forward than losing. But the Giants have a tendency to be blinded to any current or impending weakness or need once they win a bit, and that worries me.

but Bill Belichick started out 2-8 with the Patriots back in 2000. They went on to win three more games and finish at 5-11.

We are already ahead of that record. I could see a similar finish here (this season anyway).

Too many people giving up on Coach Shurmur and this team, even at 1-7. Too many people finding analogies of teams having inconsistencies from one season to the next.

The correct analogy is to look at good teams (like the Patriots) and try to figure out how to build a consistently winning program. I think BB would tell you that you need to play to win every game and work on getting better. That's what I'm hoping for.
I guess a win is a win...
bw in dc : 11/19/2018 11:53 am : link
But when you are at home playing a team that is historically bad on defense - on a near record pace for points allowed, and they struggle to generate a pass rush (which is what this oline needed) - and their QB is a turnover machine, then it should be no surprise that we won.

It's just a game you have to take with a big, big grain of salt...

I'd add that it's important to see growth and improvement from the young players that you hope will make up the core going forward. Barkley was hitting the holes hard, even when there wasn't much there. Brown looked solid again at RG and hopefully we have someone there.

Coleman looks like a good return man and still has some potential as a WR. While I hope they aren't starters next season, Pulley/Wheeler look (marginally) better and could provide valuable OL depth next season and beyond.

Defensively, I think Haley's looked solid the last couple games. Carter/Hill will benefit from the experience.
Even if the wins turn out to be meaningless...
Big Blue Blogger : 11/19/2018 12:01 pm : link
... beating teams like PHI and CHI will require contributions from players who are important for the future - not just obvious stars like Beckham and Barkley. If Carter, Hill, Tomlinson, McIntosh, Hernandez, Engram, Gallman, Coleman, etc. raise their game to the next level and help spark a few more wins, it might be worth dropping out of the top 5 picks.

Whether they win or not, there are a number of things left to accomplish this year.

There is a crazy percentage of the roster that is still in the bubble. There's a quarterback situation to figure out. The systems on both sides of the ball need serious analysis.

Whether that gets bucketed as "tanking" -- that's semantics.

Just remember Tom Coughlin ate the 2004 season, with a winning record to, as an investment in the future. It's not a crime against humanity to understand you are year or two away.

don't kid yourselves into thinking you're a contender because you finish strong after a 1-7 start. That's a recipe for starting 1-7 again next year.

No, the Giants prepared for Fitzpatrick, not Winston. They still win in all likelihood. Two different QBs with two different styles except both are turnover machines. So we don't know if the outcome is different.

There's a little life in this season now - I selfishly am enjoying it. All of a sudden, this tilt with the Eagles is pretty huge. If we manage to win that game, things are going to get interesting.

I still think we have to realize that we beat two pretty crappy teams here. TB's defense is horrendous.

But - there's definitely a different feel right now. The team seems to be rallying and believing they can make this season relevant again. I don't want to watch a bunch of fucking quitters. I want them to keep playing hard. Whatever happens, happens.

I'm pretty pumped for the Eagles game.
