NFT: Islanders at Rangers: 7 PM on MSG+

Anakim : 11/21/2018 12:22 pm
Fuck you dudes (again) for having me create this thread.

The Islanders have won eight straight against the Rangers since Dec. 6, 2016 and they're 12-1-0 against the Rangers since Dec. 2, 2015.

Soooooo I think it's about time the Rangers win one! Get it for us, Georgiev! And let Chytil's streak continue.
It's insane
ShockNRoll : 11/21/2018 12:25 pm : link
and must be how Red Sox fans felt between 1918 and 2004 that they just couldn't beat the Yankees. Hopefully it's not that long for Rangers fans to see things flip. Maybe the only way to beat the Islanders is with ex-Islanders on the team, so I predict a Ryan Strome 4 point performance tonight! Looks like Lehner in net for the Islanders tonight, and I feel good about Georgiev playing this game. I love how this Rangers' team is playing this year, let's keep the good feelings rolling going into Thanksgiving!

Except the Yankees were usually a great team in that time period. The recent Styx are a blah team.

Not bad.

Anakim, good job on the thread.

I wasn't so sure about him but boy oh boy this guy knows how to coach. He reminds me a little but of Mike Sullivan coach of the Penguins. Of course everyone is wondering what is going on with them right now. Not that I care but it is interesting how the league appears to be passing them by at this point.

Glad to have a Ranger game to get right, but that isn’t going to last forever. Would rather see Henrik in net given recent histiory. These are also the only days I miss Halak.

Let’s go Islanders!!! We need one more win against our little sisters in Manhattan.

I was a bit off.. it's a CSKA record.. 4th longest in KHL history.. he's well over 210 consecutive minutes. 302 is the record.

Disagree, mon frere. I think 2 goalies who have previously had no skin in this rivalry change things tonight. Taking Hank and Greisser/Halak out of the possibilities methinks changes the equation.

And as much as I would love to see Sorokin shine here, and battle Shesty for years to come, goalies are so damn hard to predict. Especially coming out of the K. You have guys dominate there (Nilsson) who are average to worse here, and guys that have been backups that shine there (look at Johansson also on CSKA - as is Sorokin - who couldn’t advance past the AHL yet leads the KHL with a 10-1 record and a 0.70 GAA and a .970 sv pctg), so no one really knows if anything’s a given with their NHL performances.

His goal was on a really special shot ...

And then his speed while skating with the puck... being hounded by an Islander right on his heels, he went behind his own net and just blasted up ice like he was shot from a cannon

Great shot and great skating ability with the puck on his stick.

But the Lias pick is looking more and more questionable by the day. He was considered at the very least NHL ready when he was drafted, even if he didn't have a very high ceiling. Meanwhile, I haven't really followed the guys who were drafted after him (someone shine the PJ bat signal), but just looking at the stats:

Mittelstadt is doing alright in Buffalo
Rasmussen has 7 points in 19 games
Tippett and Nick Suzuki are doing very well in the OHL

Chytil looks like a star in the making, but I am a bit concerned about Lias' lack of productivity
Give Lias

Time. He was point a game in the AHL, and he is doing other good things while waiting for the points to start.
We’d all love to see him have more of an impact, and
baadbill : 11/21/2018 10:39 pm : link
I’ve been worried he’s going to get sent back down...

but at the same time, I think he’s only been getting around 5 minutes a game; he’s been playing on the 4th line; and he’s still a kid and probably stressed as hell over getting that 1st goal,

so I’ve been telling myself to wait until season’s end and hopefully things will be very different for him by then

He just turned 20 years old. Nothing is guaranteed in sports, but the guy is a good skater, he has speed, good hands, good shot, good hockey IQ, and he's a hard worker, and yes, plays the cliched 200 foot game. He's a high character guy too, who isn't afraid to play physical.

He led the Swedish Superelit in points as a 17 year old and PIMS (or close to it with PIMS) that's a Peter Forsberg, Adam Graves, Dino Ciccarelli, etc. stunt.

I likened Andersson to Marchand - but not a douche like Marchand (as far as I know), and Marchand only broke 50 points once he was paired with Bergeron and was 22 years old. Two full seasons from now for Andersson and I think he can do that too.

Be patient. Every time I've watched Andersson (until the NHL) he was one of the most noticeable players on the ice. And that's on teams with Dahlin, Petterson, and Boqvist among others playing against other countries all-stars.

Martin Necas was just publicly ripped by his coach (AHL), at least Quinn isn't pulling any of that shit and hurting their confidence, he seems to be putting all the young guys in positions to succeed without a lot of pressure and I think that's smart and will pay off in the long run.

I think Chytl's early production is creating unrealistic expectations for Lias. It's possible - well, almost certain, that Chytl is playing over his head right now. He's obviously not going to continue to be a PPG player from here on out, but the goal streak is obviously nice to see.

He's adjusting well and doing a lot of really good things thus far - he's ahead of schedule, so it seems like Lias is behind. But that's probably not the case.

Lias is still just 20 years old and more often than not, it's going to take some time for a player this young to acclimate and adjust. Most guys aren't McDavid, Laine, Matthews, etc.

Lias' average TOI is like ~10 min - so, Quinn is obviously working him into the fold slowly and letting him learn a little bit at a time until he's ready to take on a larger role. I'm not worried about him. There are a lot of reasons to believe he'll become a productive pivot here with the proper coaching and development.

I'm thrilled with Quinn so far. He's doing a tremendous job. There's an accountability factor that was not here with AV. From Smith, to Shattenkirk to Skjei... it doesn't matter if the player is young or has been around a while. If you don't do your job or are making mistakes, you'll sit. Simple as that. That was missing for a long time here. No more playing favorites.

Plenty of reasons to be excited for Rangerstown. We're obviously not a contender right now, but it's impossible to be anything but happy with what the team is doing right now.

But the Lias pick is looking more and more questionable by the day.///////

He just turned 20 years old. Nothing is guaranteed in sports, but the guy is a good skater, he has speed, good hands, good shot, good hockey IQ, and he's a hard worker, and yes, plays the cliched 200 foot game. He's a high character guy too, who isn't afraid to play physical.
Not sure how it all plays out, but his stretch of play early in the 3rd period I thought was outstanding, big part in sustaining pressure in the Isles' end, finding the open man, digging hard along the boards.
Chytl, Hayes, etc.
ColHowPepper : 11/22/2018 10:42 am : link
Tough to watch full game on T'giving Eve when I'm full bore in the kitchen, but managed to catch last 30 minutes recorded.

Still didn't see how Chytl's shot from a sharp angle got into the net. Dman right in front of Lehner, don't know if it went off his skate and off the keeper and in; paper this AM said Chytl put in rebound of his own shot. That I definitely did not see.

Last few games Chris Hayes has been putting on displays of just outstanding stickhandling, fast fast forehand to backhand and back and the defenders can't get at the puck as he moves through traffic.

It's like Hayes and Kreider have been re-born under Quinn. And, Zib!!
From looking at TOI
Dave on the UWS : 11/22/2018 11:31 am : link
Quinn hasn’t lost sight of three fact that they are in rebuilding, teaching mode and developing the young players is the focus. I’m surprised they have done as well as they have. There’s obviously good chemistry, but Hank and Kreider are playing as well as is possible. That’s a big part of it. The arrow is pointing up.

mentioned a couple of times, after the Florida game (I think) Saturday night, after the PG show, SNY aired a ~20 minute segment on, interview with, Quinn from his MSG office (window out to the ice) but most of it was him, at the rink, either camp or after season started, instructing the players on positioning on PP and PK, passing lanes, shooting lanes. His demeanor and instruction so clear, so confident, born of his knowledge. One brief interaction with Chytl. He is teaching his team in tactical play, focusing on improving skills. Seems to me the team's centers and others taking faceoffs, percentage way up from last few years. It was a sore spot for many fans when they kept losing faceoffs, esp. late in games in their own end.
Sorry for the repetition.

Otherwise their newb goalie had a shutout, their poor STs were enough better than ours, their 7 straight games starting out down 0-2 ended by going up 2-0. They just outworked NYR all game

Welp on to the next. Caps tomorrow. If we play like this it won't be close but hopefully they put forth a decent showing with better effort & execution. Another matinee too so hopefully that wasn't the issue

Peeing on players to get the most out of them is a new approach. Could work. Keep us posted.

Tough game today - they looked like shit, Andersson and Howdon in particular seemed overmatched. An obvious reminder this team is best served selling near the deadline and continuing the rebuild with lottery picks. But -- great to see Hank and the team generally competing so far nonetheless. Literally the only pro team I cheer for that's remotely competitive these days.

Oh, I agree. I'd just like to see the staff try to get him over the hump of that first goal. It's tough enough for old timers to handle a slump, but these young guys who go into a slump trying to get their very 1st one can really weigh on them heavily

Can't find the answer so far ... but the article I've linked below seems to confirm Leetch and Greshner ... and maybe Park (but I don't know what they mean by "adjusted points")

Quote:
A 20-year-old Brad Park scored 26 adjusted points in 54 games. Ron Greschner debuted at 20 as well and potted 39 adjusted points in 70 games.

Also possible that the answer is Brady Skjei ... article notes that "Skjei scored 39 points in 80 games at age 22"

But of course the question is which Ranger defenseme, in addition to Pionk, have scored 29 points in their first 50 games ... so the article linked to only has suggestive data, not an actual answer.

baadbill : 11/26/2018 10:30 pm : link
I looked up Zubov because he wasn't being mentioned in any of the articles Google was shoving at me ... Zubov played 49 games his initial season and scored 31 pts. So he clearly is one of the 3. Leetch obviously did, so that's 2.

Greschner had 45 pts in 70 games his rookie year and likely had 29 pts in his first 50 games but that's still not a definitive answer.
I found game logs for Greshner for his rookie year

I heard something in the minutes before game time about Smith being listed at forward but I don't recall any shift in which I was aware of his actually skating at forward during the game.

Only 11 forwards were dressed ... so maybe it was something Quinn put on paper to show 4 lines? ... but why would he care to just show it on paper? I dunno ... it's a bit bizarre... It would be interesting to see his TOI, but I couldn't find the game stats (they wouldn't break down his TOI by position anyway I guess)

How do you plan to do that while getting all these BS overtime points? We are going to end up with the 8th-10th pick in the draft ... again

Hopefully Staal is playing well enough to move his contract in February.

By the way Lundqvist never had mask issues prior to this past week. Never. (He also had skate blade issues last week). To insinuate that he's buying time or cheating is straight bullshit.

Yeah, that's true. I expected them to lose tonight anyway, but I got sucked in after they took a 3-0 lead. Oops.

I'm not insinuating anything about Hank. I'm a fucking Rangers' fan and love watching Lundqvist. But don't be stupid and say he hasn't stopped play for a broken strap before this week because that is total crap.

As for how I plan to do that (get the 1st round pick), I have news for you... neither you nor I nor any fan have anything to do with whether they win or lose. Thus, I enjoy rooting for a hard working team while also wanting them to get the 1st round pick. At the end of the day, they will end up with whatever record they end up with, regardless of what I think or do (or what you think or what you do). And it's just stupid to think otherwise.
The other thing about this season that is enjoyable is watching
baadbill : 12/2/2018 9:42 pm : link
these guys learn to play the way Quinn wants them to play. And that's a process that will carry over and grow year to year. I really love what Quinn's doing so far this year.
The stick and blade/mask issues are separate discussions
MetsAreBack : 12/2/2018 9:56 pm : link
I agree he loses his stick a lot (and doesn't handle the puck well with it either). The other stuff never happened before this past week. He's not Jonathan Quick with that crap.

Baadbill - your we control nothing crap as fans so I'm the most optimistic bestest fan there ever was ... is tired

Get lost with your "bestest fan there ever was" crap. I'm tired of hearing people like you moan and groan that the Giants or Rangers winning a game means the rest of us are "bad fans" and that some how because we get excited by a win, that it is "our fault" when they don't get the first pick in the draft. What a load of fucking bull crap that is.

It is stupid. It is magical thinking. And it is very tiresome.

I want the Giants to get the first pick in the 2019 draft. But you know what, I also enjoyed today's game. It was a fun game. And I enjoy how the Rangers play. And I want them to have the first pick in the draft.

And my enjoying the Giants today has zero to do with whether they won or lost. And has zero to do with how they draft. So stop with your stupidity already.
I am very aware that every win by the Rangers (or Giants)
baadbill : 12/2/2018 10:20 pm : link
hurts their draft position. But, I also realize I can't control any of that. All I can control is how I react to what happens - and I chose to react in a way that makes me happiest (since reacting in a way that makes me unhappy doesn't seem like a very wise life philosophy).

So, I try to enjoy each game of the season as though the draft position doesn't matter (because I can't control it anyway). And, of course, if they happen to lose so many games they end up with the #1 or other great draft position, then I am happy as a pig in shit about that too.

It is like going on vacation to the beach and having it rain every day. You can either chose to stay inside and be miserable, or find a way to relax and have a good vacation anyway. I chose to enjoy my vacation even if it rains.

It is really all about being an adult.

Rooting for losses in hockey is futile, IMO
Mike in Long Beach : 12/3/2018 9:03 am : link
You can lose every game and the chances of landing Jack Hughes still rests at less than 25%. It's not worth the risk of establishing a defeatist culture. And yes, I think that is a very real thing.

In football, I get it a lot more. Last year's final 4 games was the first time I ever brought myself to root against the Giants for their own best interests. But while I get the notion a lot more in football, I too have issues actually bringing myself to do it. I was rooting for us yesterday.

And while I know this is idiotic, I sit here and say to myself that we're 2 games out of the wild card if Washington loses tomorrow. It's not happening. I know it. But having that math exist keeps me invested. So I cling to it. Winning yesterday is why I'll be watching for sure next week. And since I love sports and want to watch, I often root for the Giants even if it's not in their best interests.

I thought the Q was what current Rangers formerly played for Tampa (but I doubt I'm right, because I only saw it for a brief moment)... and besides I can only think of 3 current Rangers who belonged with Tampa:

Howden
Namestnikov
DeAngelo (why I used the word "belonged"... he was drafted by Tampa but not sure he ever played with them)
ugh

Better team than I thought they'd be
MetsAreBack : 12/10/2018 9:54 pm : link
But just looked, we have fewest ROW in hockey through 30 games - just 9 - tied with Chicago for that mark (man how times have changed vs 5 years ago... LA is atrocious too)

A few of that 9 row is ot 3-on-3 too... this team is trying, and that's admirable .... but it's a generally terrible team
Good first period
MetsAreBack : 12/14/2018 7:51 pm : link
One thing I don't quite get - when in the defensive zone and a defender breaks his stick ... at least in the 1st and 3rd periods... why don't they simply get another stick? If it's a Dman perhaps a forward gives them a stick and then opportunistically grabs himself another...

Rangers played basically 2 on 5 for 30 seconds because two sticks broke... got through it somehow ... but was odd to me that this is deemed better odds than taking 4 seconds to skate 25 feet to the bench to grab one

I've never understood that ... the player without a stick always seems to act as though he's making a difference (and sometimes, but very rarely, he kicks a puck out of the zone), but imo 99.99% of the time the team would be better playing 5 on 3 for the 10 seconds it would take for him to get a new stick. But I must be wrong because I don't think I've ever seen that happen.
Wouldn't take anywhere close to 10 seconds
MetsAreBack : 12/14/2018 8:04 pm : link
Unless it's Mike Rupp or something At least in 1st and 3rd periods when your bench is near. In the second period I could understand the hesitance

ChaChing : 12/16/2018 4:31 pm : link
Henrik was amazing again. You could say he really only gave up the last 2 goals - 1st one was a random bouncer off the boards & over the net off of him, the other one of the many awful D zone plays setting Vegas up right in front

In the mean time with that awful D, he was stopping rush after rush, grade A chance after chance. Amazing how good he still is. Team is what it is at this point being so young but it would be nice to get this man a halfway decent defense...
I had the Giants on the big screen and Rangers on my tablet
baadbill : 12/16/2018 7:38 pm : link
which resulted in me having no sense of the flow of either game (well, that’s not exactly accurate - it was pretty easy to tell the flow down the toilet of the Giants)... but what was clear about the Rangers was Hank... he has been at the very top of his game

I think Zuccarello will be dealt, but I'd really hope that they'll consider hanging onto Hayes. He's playing really well this year and can be part of the turnaround.

Was very heartening.

Good to see the kids (Howden, Chytil, Pionk, D'Angelo) step up with quality minutes.

Namestinikov is making someone look like a genius (or fool).

I do miss the dedicated game threads. Could someone please explain why they were abandoned?
