Heard Paul Alexander say Solder was a "jump setter"

Racer : 11/30/2018 11:44 am
when talking on Sirius about NYG oline. He continued that the technique worked well in New England where Brady was getting the ball out better than anyone.

Do you guys who know Oline play buy it, and if so, from a pro personnel standpoint is it something NYG probably figured was something that could be adjusted-to by Solder, Hunter and the fundamentals of the protection calls?

Thanks in advance.

made some interesting comments on why playing OT in the NFL is so hard. Most guys coming out of college know maybe 1 pass blocking set. (Technique.) KM said he had 5 different sets and used them intermittently in games to keep the DE guessing. If you show the same look over and iver again at the pro level you’re dead.
Jump set

is an aggressive pass blocking technique where you attack, or "jump", the defender to lock onto him immediately, instead of setting back and letting the defender come to you before delivering your punch.
jump set is sort of like bump and run....

You'd better be right, and you cannot use it all the time on the edge---these days, rush edgers are sized for speed, and they're too quick for a steady diet of a quick punch.
Solder isn't ONLY a jump setter, but he's good at it because he uses

his hands effectively and keeps defenders off his body. You'll see him vary his sets. IMO he seems most comfortable in a vertical set, giving some ground but using his hands to direct a rusher upfield and away from the launch point.

confirms what others have observed. Solder is used to pushing his man deep behind the QB, but Brady usually had a pocket to step into. With our center and right guard routinely collapsing (especially pre-Brown) Eli has no place to go.

I'd really love to see this current offense with a spry QB. Doesn't even need to be overly athletic, just someone that can hop up in the pocket efficiently. Brady was always slow as shit but sets his feet incredibly well and does that shoulder dip/juke that allows him to create room.

I also think Solder will be fine. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he has plus games in the majority of his next 2+ years here.
Good stuff, guys,

I'd like to see this current offense with Eli and a decent OL
