where there are fewer sports options to compete with, like the AAFL is doing. Obviously they won't be going head to head with the NFL season, but I'd think you'd still want to be somewhere with not as much going on as major cities, so you're a bit of a bigger deal among entertainment options.
outlasts the other one will be a matter of semantics. Technically, the Arena League still exists, with all 5 fans that follow it and cities like Des Molines that back it up.
I like football, why not? Sure the quality will suck, but a shitty football game is still better than basketball to me, and yes, I am glad they will have a team in NY. Hopefully Pat Leonard gets put on their beat, and taken off of the Giants. Hey a guy can wish right?
due to the NFL's monopolistic ways. All of these new leagues struggle the first few years and will need to fight the journalistic bashing from the NFL's media toadies who wield influence with fans until they get their legs underneath them, like the old AFL which took 7 seasons to reach a level competitive with the NFL.
With video services dying for content and the NFL turning into the outdoor Arena League, this is content that will find a home. Actually, NBC (which got into football broadcasting as the home of the old AFL) had a lot of potential with the XFL since it was part owner but Dick Ebersol lost his nerve, folded it and backed up a Brinks truck for the NFL Lords which is why it is amusing that his kid is producer or whatever for the other new league.
having football on would ensure an audience would watch, the CFL would have a bigger viewership in the US.
Both of these leagues will even pale in comparison to the talent of the CFL and people will not watch poor football.
Semi-pro football games are lucky to attract a few hundred spectators. This won't be much of a step up from that.
I can't argue with the CFL point. I started watching it earlier this year, and lost interest. I don't watch much college football, due to my schedule, but I absolutely loved the idea of the WLAF. Why can't the NFL either start a developemental league, or invest in one of the startups? The USFL gained some traction in the 80's because they threw a little money around, maybe there will be enough in one of the two start up leagues to make it watchable?
It was legit NFL-fringe talent and it was done during offseason AND they played regular rules (not XFL or CFL crap) then it could be an interesting bridge during that Boeing offseason,
I just personally feel it’s going to lack atmosphere and be a watered down dull event.
But would be cool if they can get fantasy football involved.
Name & location likely announced Wednesday at the press conference. Safe to assume they will play at MetLife as that is where the conference is being held.
by donating the $500 million to find a cure for cancer.
The NFL is successful because of its star players.
At $7,500/game (or $200K salary per year), the XFL isn't getting any star players for that amount of money.
I really don't see what is going to drastically change compared to the first XFL season.
and I only say that because Vince is going to distribute the product directly to the consumers, and cut out cable in the process.
Why would he do that?
A) He has the network to distribute it on if he chooses
B) All this talk about how he wants to get the game into 2 hrs. Well, how do you do that? No commercials, by going directly to consumers.

Not really, no. The USFL did OK for a while because they were playing in the spring/summer when there was no football and because they had legitimate talent, guys like Reggie White, Herschel Walker, Jim Kelly, Steve Young, Bart Oates, etc. There won't be anyone remotely on that level in the XFL.
Hopefully they will play in the NFL off-season.
I think the XFL will outlast the AAF only because McMahon is a crazy billionaire in his 70s, who’ll keep pumping money in just because he can
I really hope at least 1 league succeeds. I dislike monopolies and if there is a good showing, the NFL may choose to change some policies.
Having football during the off-season would be great if the product is decent.
