NFT: Is Longhorn Steakhouse any good?

Pete in MD : 12/4/2018 5:14 pm
I’m on the road for a client meeting tomorrow. My dinner choices are limited. The menu looks like Outback with a fake Texas vibe instead of a fake Australian one. It’s either that or another, more local chain, which I tried last time and was underwhelming.
It's pretty bad....
rebel yell : 12/4/2018 5:16 pm : link
but I'd need to know your other options to say if it's worse.
No
kennyd : 12/4/2018 5:17 pm : link
It's not. As you said, it's basically an Outback with slightly different decor. Sounds like you are in nowheresville, USA
No
The_Boss : 12/4/2018 5:21 pm : link
Avoid if possible.
they got that cinnamon butter
MBavaro : 12/4/2018 5:21 pm : link
stuff, which is pretty good....

And don't they have a f'ing mechanical bull in every restaurant?

If the client is from there why not ask him where to go?
steve in ky : 12/4/2018 5:23 pm : link
I used to have plenty of salesman offer to take me out to eat and most often they asked me for a suggestion since they weren't from the area.
I think the question is "good relative to what?"
Mike from Ohio : 12/4/2018 5:23 pm : link
Is it a decent meal? Yeah it's not going to be a rubbery steak with no flavor that makes you stop somewhere else on the way home for something to eat.

Is it comparable to a Morton's or Ruth's Chris? Absolutely not. Not a place for a high quality steak or to impress clients. Noticeable fall off from the higher end chains.

But I would tell you people are weird when it comes to steak. Some people will crap on it just because it is a chain, when in fact the steak that comes off their grill is probably no worse, or maybe even better, than what many folks here are pulling off their own grill.
When I was in sales, I had a whole team of folks
Ben in Tampa : 12/4/2018 5:26 pm : link
Who fucking LOVED Longhorn and would request every time I’d buy them dinner. I hated it, but it is a very predictable steak.

Garbage

But just like Outback I probably wouldn't be going there if you are a steak savant.

I’m in suburban
Pete in MD : 12/4/2018 5:38 pm : link
strip mall hell. I’m not taking the clients out so don’t need to impress anyone. I’m flying solo for dinner but I refuse to settle for fast food. The other place is called 110 Grille. I suppose I could venture further but still have work to do later.
I
mitch300 : 12/4/2018 5:50 pm : link
enjoyed it. It's not on the same level as Morton's or Del Frisco's ( which is my favorite) However, for the price it's okay. I would compare it to outback. Maybe a little better.
do you happen to be in Massachusetts or New Hampshire?
markky : 12/4/2018 6:04 pm : link
if so, 110 Grill is some kind of regional chain. haven't been there but I'd expect it to be better than Longhorn but nowhere near as good as a real steak house.

good luck.

You're thinking of Texas Roadhouse
Can't you throw peanuts on the floor
B in ALB : 12/4/2018 6:13 pm : link
at Texas Roadhouse? I wouldn't take a customer there unless I wanted to lose their business.
Yeah, I’m in Massachusetts.
Pete in MD : 12/4/2018 6:15 pm : link
About an hour outside of Boston. I wasn’t impressed with 110 Grille last time. It seems silly comparing but when you have to travel for work, it’s the little things.
Longhorn
FJ : 12/4/2018 6:16 pm : link
Longhorn Steakhouse is OK. I had a client pick it out for lunch - he likes it. My steak was a little thin compared to a nice steakhouse or even Outback, so it was a little overdone (I ordered medium). I would recommend going one degree lower; i.e., if you like it medium, ask for medium-rare.
and the responses are predictable
Greg from LI : 12/4/2018 6:19 pm : link
It's fairly average fare, nothing special yet nothing bad either, and the gourmets of BBI will scream about how they'd rather eat [insert horrifying thing here].
I actually had a really
B in ALB : 12/4/2018 6:19 pm : link
good steak at Longhorn Steakhouse once. It was fuckin delicious and I couldn't believe it.

But you're leaving out a bunch of information - what kind of clients are these? Do they require a high-end restaurant or are they just happy to get a free meal on your dime?

And where are you located? Surely, there has to be at least one local spot that is solid and not a chain.

Unless you're in Mississippi or somewhere similar where your choices are limited to Subway or gas station BBQ (which, btw can be delicious). I've traveled all 50 states for business and have rarely had an issue finding an appropriate restaurant for a customer who warranted taking to dinner.
110 Grill
kennyd : 12/4/2018 6:21 pm : link
I was travelling for work and ate at the one in Braintree a couple months ago. While certainly not 4 star dining, 1000% better than Longhorn. Maybe you caught them on an off night. Good bar to eat at too if you're flying solo.

My 2 cents
It's not Luger's but it's certainly
Metnut : 12/4/2018 6:21 pm : link
better than Outback. As far as chains go, you can do a lot worse.
Longhorn is a Darden restaurant I think
B in ALB : 12/4/2018 6:22 pm : link
same company that gives us Olive Garden.
Wild West Shrimp
Big Al : 12/4/2018 6:23 pm : link
appetizer.
These types of chains are really hit or miss
steve in ky : 12/4/2018 6:26 pm : link
They have a high employee turnover rate and every location is different. So you may hit it right and get a someone who cooks a good steak and get a good server at your table, or you equally might get poor service and a poorly cooked meal. Just a roll of the dice.

Longhorn better than Outback
Big Al : 12/4/2018 6:27 pm : link
Outback stuff to too salty. They are right next to each other a few minutes from me on 17 in Rochelle Park, NJ.
It's a place
phil in arizona : 12/4/2018 6:44 pm : link
you go to with your parents. Better than Outback. One of the better big chains. I've had good meals there.
Outback

Puts spices and herbs on a ribeye ffs.

Honestly too much hate for chains here. Olive garden I understand though. Longhorn is better than outback, but a notch below Texas roadhouse. I believe everything at texas roadhouse is made from scratch. The cinnamon butter should be illegal. First couple times there I filled up on it and just took the dinner to go.

Agreed. Some privately owned restaurants I've been to have been laughably poor in quality and there have been many chains I've left satisfied.

Just because it's expensive and "authentic" doesnt mean its automatically good to me.

Doesn't mean it's good but should have a lease some personality and authenticity to it. After that you can decide if you like it or not.

Absolutely nothing at the chains we're talking about is made from scratch. The whole point of a chain is to do things in as big a quantity as possible for as cheap as possible and send it to the individual restaurants. That's why Olive Garden (who own Longhorn) tastes the same in NYC as they do in Tulsa and Portland. They are all about consistency and cost.

Not there there's anything wrong with that business model but the quality suffers, period. And FWIW I've been in the wine and restaurant business for close to 30 years.
You know..
Chris in Philly : 12/4/2018 8:07 pm : link
you’re not being some over the top food snob like Peter O’Toole in Ratatouille just because you hate places that boil all their dishes in a fucking bag...
It sucks

Texas Roadhouse and Saltgrass are much better options
I have had a lot worse
Jim in Scranton : 12/4/2018 8:19 pm : link
when it comes to chains. Steak is a little above average. I do like their steak knives
Is Outback supposed to blow?
BlueLou'sBack : 12/4/2018 10:04 pm : link
A friend treated me to dinner there recently, said get "whatever you want." I ordered the 20 ounce porterhouse "med rare on the rare side" and it came out perfectly cooked. Yeah, there is a fair amount of some proprietary s&p blend on it, kind of like a Montreal steak seasoning blend, but it wasn't over the top.
Perfectly cooked, very tender, delicious steak, and more than the 20 oz advertised. Sides were meh, so what? For $30, that's an excellent slab of beef.
So I went to both places.
Pete in MD : 12/4/2018 10:18 pm : link
Longhorn wasn’t bad at all but was sad. 110 Grill was packed. I didn’t eat there but the scene was fun.
Only been to Longhorn once

It's a steak
Gman11 : 12/4/2018 11:10 pm : link
A slab of cow meat that they throw on a grill like any other steakhouse.

As long as they cook it the way you want it, it's fine.

Agree with this.

I've been to Longhorn twice and neither time did I have a steak that was better than Outback's ribeye.

Texas Roadhouse is passable if you have one of those
I've been there for a work lunch
pjcas18 : 12/5/2018 10:30 am : link
it's like almost every other chain. You go for the convenience, price, speed, and consistency (for the decent chains) but normally the quality is less than that of a traditional private restaurant (or the traditional private restaurant would be out of business or won't last long).

I had some kind of steak salad and it's kind of hard to do that wrong, not a bad lunch.

Not sure I'd take customers or prospects there, but you know the customers.

Why was it sad?

Dark, depressing. Not many people in there. Servers seemed to hate their jobs. But the food wasn’t terrible.

Outback is a good comp for Longhorn,
Section331 : 12/5/2018 3:16 pm : link
but if I had to pick between the 2, I would choose Outback. It's not great, far from it, but it's servicable. Longhorn isn't terrible either, but Outback is a little better.
