Eric Dickerson feels sorry for Saquon Barkley

BlueLou'sBack : 12/5/2018 12:10 am
Said - at some event in LA - that the Giant's OL sux. He was responding to the query if Barkley might break his rookie rushing record of 1,800+ yards.

He thinks Barkley is something special, talking about his lateral agility and "acceleration off the charts."
Dickerson on Barkley - ( New Window )
Well
USAF NYG Fan : 12/5/2018 5:11 am : link
he ain't wrong!
That was back in October. Different offensive line, I think.
Big Blue Blogger : 12/5/2018 5:23 am : link
Anyway, it’s obvious now that Barkley won’t sniff 1800 rushing yards. He’ll come closer to Dickerson’s rookie yards-from-scrimmage number, 2212. Barkley’s current stats prorate to a little under 2100, on far fewer touches than Dickerson’s 441. BTW, Dickerson fumbled about 50 times his first four years. Barkley hasn’t... well, I don’t want to jinx it, but the kid’s ball security is incredible.
Dickerson never makes my top 5 RB all time list
BlueLou'sBack : 12/5/2018 5:50 am : link
Largely because he ran behind an awesome OL. Right off the bat I recall two HOF guys who blocked for him - Jackie Slater and Tom Mack, and I'm sure I'm forgetting at least one other Pro Bowler on that OL.

As good as SB has looked so far, imagine him behind some studs on the OL.

I watched a lot of CFB the past two years (16 & 17) and wanted Barkley to be a Giant since 16.

PSU actually underutilized him...
Tom Mack retired from football in 1978, five years before
truebluelarry : 12/5/2018 5:59 am : link
Dickerson was drafted by the Rams.

The Rams OL was great in the mid 1980s though. In 1985 four of the five starters went to the Pro Bowl: LG Kent Hill, C Doug Smith, RG Dennis Harrah & RT Jackie Slater.

Good post and good information for younger fans. Didn’t know about the line Dickerson ran behind
Dickerson was a great back
SLIM_ : 12/5/2018 7:54 am : link
I struggle with putting a top # rating on him but he also played for the Colts and had 2 years over 1300 yards rushing for them. Rams line was very good but saying that they had 4 Pro-Bowlers and the reason for Dickerson's sstats is somewhat misleading. They got there based on Dickerson's production so it is a matter of football being the ultimate team sport.

Thanks for the corrections!

I was scratching my head tryingng to recall the others besides Slater...

Is always bitter and negative.
E-Dicker was clearly an all time great...
trueblueinpw : 12/5/2018 8:55 am : link
Come on man, his line made him a great back? At least we can safely assume that’s not something anyone will ever say about Barks.

Top 5 RB that I’ve seen in 4 decades? Let’s see, Faulk, Sanders, Sweetness, E-Dicker, Emmitt. Who am I missing?
The Rams changed their whole team approach
Matt in SGS : 12/5/2018 9:09 am : link
after they traded Dickerson to the Colts. They focused on the passing attack with Jim Everett, Henry Ellard, and yes Flipper Anderson. But they didn't exactly miss Dickerson's production.

They traded Dickerson mid season to the Colts in a 3 way trade in 1987, which unbelievably the Bills ended up getting the best of the deal.

The Rams were a bad team that year, finished 6-9, but the Dickerson distractions and strike hurt them. They started 1-7 and finished 5-2. But that year Charles White came off the bench to rush for 1374 yards.

The next year, Greg Bell (who came over from the Bills) would rush for 1212 yards and 16 TDs in 1988 and 1137 and 15 TDs in 1989. So the Rams great offensive line more than helped replace Dickerson.

Meanwhile Dickerson was great in 1987, he rushed for 1011 yards in 9 games. Helped the Colts go from a 3-13 team in 1986 to the playoffs in 1987. In 1988 and 1989 he put up 1659 yards and 1311 yards, better than Bell but still comparable. By 1990 at age 30 he was cooked. He only rushed for 677 yards and missed time with injuries and he was never a factor again.

The Colts only made the playoffs that 1987 season. The Rams meanwhile went to the playoffs 2 straight years and the NFC Championship in 1989.

But as I mentioned, the Bills came out of that trade with Cornelius Bennett, who was holding out from the Colts. Bennett allowed the Bills to move Shane Conlin inside where he was better suited and solidified the entire defense to set up for their Super Bowl runs.

Anyway, tl/dr. Dickerson was a great back who's numbers were inflated by a great line and he never really led his teams anywhere. And he fumbled a lot. Barkley is closer to Barry Sanders, who was better than Dickerson. And his trade made the Bills better. The end.

C'mon man, if you go back a little further, and for me prolly #1 all time: Gayle Sayers.

Way too short a career, but his sheer brilliance has never been equalled except maybe by Sanders.

Nobody did everything like Sayers: running, catching, returning both KOs and punts.

His TD per touch ratio is still the best, no? And he wasn't the same player post knee surgery...

Also I'd rate OJ over Dickerson, maybe even Earl Campbell.

Oh Dickerson was great, no doubt, just not top 5 all time.

Jim Brown was just before my time.
Thank you Matt for a definitive post on

ED. AP is another great back whose done his thing with less help than ED had. AP's made the greatest comeback post knee surgery.
Quite honestly
ryanmkeane : 12/5/2018 9:39 am : link
this current version of OL is worlds better than last season. Barkley's rushing numbers are pretty good this year.

I’d argue that title belongs to Thomas Davis.

Matt your recall of NFL history (not just Giants), and the ability to set the scene during the time period is remarkable. On top of that your "Going back through the VCR archives series..." series make you an invaluable member of BBI.

Or Jaylon Smith; I meant among RBs.

Depends on you define comeback. If you're talking about the 1st season back, AP runs away with the award (no pun intended): MVP and rushing title (>2000 yds)
i read an article in the LA Times back in '86
markky : 12/5/2018 12:48 pm : link
i think it was by the great Jim Murray. anyway, his take was that if you subtracted 50 yards (of field position) for every fumble by a RB, then Joe Morris was actually a more productive back than Dickerson.

The same. Go to my FB page and message me there so I can give you my cell #!

Watched more CFB than Giants the past 2.5 years, and therefore not surprised how good SB is.

Oh ok gotcha!
But, but, how would EMILY Dickerson feel about Shaquon?
OldGiantsFan : 12/5/2018 4:45 pm : link
I think the First Lady of American Letters would pen this:

As my arb'trary life limps away,
And I labor, lost, dawn to dawn,
My eyes find one, true, shining star.
Oh yes, my beloved Sha-quon.

Rage not all night, you vagrant winds,
Nor let dreary bells clang anon.
The Almighty's hand is upon him ...
He is .... My beloved Sha-quon.

The dark-wet Sundays still haunt me,
I wait for shadows' creep to my lawn.
T'is then that the highlights all reach me,
T'is, t'is, my beloved, Sha-quon.
