This is the WFAN Shurmur article mentioned by Papa

FranknWeezer : 12/5/2018 8:57 am
Saw Bob Papa mention this on Twitter and how they’ve been blasting this article on Sirius this morning. Check it out
WFAN writer’s take on Shurmur - ( New Window )

Whenever someone starts an article with "The dictionary definition of whatever the article subject is about" you know it's going to be a terrible article and the writer is probably a hack.
I wonder
Fred in Atlanta : 12/5/2018 9:06 am : link
what they said when Bill Parcells first coached the Giants, the papers were all calling for his firing. Sometimes great first years as coach can be fools gold.
What a piece of shit
Gman11 : 12/5/2018 9:06 am : link
that was. I'm sorry I wasted the time to read that garbage. Who is this guy to question people's intelligence and effort? What has he ever done at the NFL level? Get the fuck out of here.
This is silly of Papa
jcn56 : 12/5/2018 9:07 am : link
Here's some rando writing for WFAN's website (yes, the radio station's website), penning the absolute worst article anyone's ever read. It doesn't deserve any attention at all, let alone getting pumped on social media and on satellite radio.

And that's from a guy who doesn't think Shurmur is cut out for this either.
Drivel

.
I disagree with most of the article
Gap92 : 12/5/2018 9:10 am : link
There seems to be none of the backstabbing and infighting that plagued us the past few years. And the team is playing hard for him - we just don't have the talent yet (especially after turning over half the roster).
The whole "he acts like his Parcells or Belichick" thing doesn't really fly for me either. Shurmer may be a bit awkward with the media, but I feel like that is more a result of him feeling like the outcome of a game can be explained succinctly in 2 minutes rather than a 20 minute back and forth. He's also a mild-mannered midwesterner which is going to be an acquired taste here in NY.

Is he the answer? I don't know. Of course I want him to be. He's made a few boneheaded decisions, but overall it's hard to judge him when you turn over half+ the roster in year one. The players that he does have appear to be playing hard.

For all the criticism of Shurmur
joeinpa : 12/5/2018 9:22 am : link
He has a 1-7 team whom many said would not win another game, 3-1 after the bye.

Even I can see some of the adjustments he s made on offense.

Also against a supposedly very good Bears defense his offense has tw very impressive drives, one at the end of the 4th which unfortunately did not end in points, and one in OT, which should have been a walk off.

I think much of the criticism towards him is premature and based in fan frustration.

This team is improving.
What’s the saying?
gmenrule-va : 12/5/2018 9:22 am : link
A year late and a dollar short ? Not sure what he is looking at or those he supposedly interviewed.
What has Papa been saying about the article?
bradshaw44 : 12/5/2018 9:25 am : link
Because I don't think it's a good or arcuate article at all. I'm not a big Shurmur fan, but he has the team playing hard. They have won 3 of 4 and could easily have been 4 of 4.
...
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 12/5/2018 9:26 am : link
I don't think Shurmur is the right man for the job, but I don't see Mara firing him after this season. If the team had quit, that's a different story, but they're still out there trying their best.

You can question a bunch of things with Shurmur
The_Boss : 12/5/2018 9:33 am : link
His game plans
In game adjustments
Clock management
His overall feel for the game
And his long term viability for the job

But you cannot question if the players quit. It’s night and day compared to what transpired during last season.
This article is spot on...
the mike : 12/5/2018 9:37 am : link
Shurmur is not a head coach - he is a coordinator. Very likable guy who can skillfully carry out a game plan devised and controlled by an effective head coach. His brutal game management and mind numbing play calling have been nothing short of disastrous and directly led to at least two losses.

On Sunday, Shurmur actually began his press conference by saying "some people are fond of talented people, some people are fond of smart people, I’m fond of tough, resilient people," as though these are mutually exclusive attributes. He actually articulated in an unaided statement that he likes tough and resilient clods who lack intelligence? This of course is silly and not what he really meant, but if this is how he clumsily presents ideas to the media, then how does he express ideas to the players every day? Could any player be motivated by him? Would you be motivated in your job if he was your direct manager?

Shurmur was a mistake. Perhaps the worst mistake by Gettleman in his first year. And his likability makes him much more scary than the universally unlikable McAdoo's and Handley's of the world. While I acknowledge John Mara will never make a change after only one year, it is unfortunately only a matter of time before he realizes that a change is necessary to get back to playoff football in East Rutherford...

I am hopeful that John realizes this sooner rather than later. Actually, I am praying, pleading and downright begging... John, you are not only tough and resilient, but you are ALSO talented and smart. There is no shame in fast failure - it is in fact the essence of righting the ship as quickly as possible...

Yup. Just look at the players running over to Shurmur after the 4th down TD pass to Odell at the end of the first half. They all ran over to him laughing and high fiving him coming off the field. That was the sign of a team that hasn't quit and appreciates their coach.

Lol. Sums it up nicely Mr. Madison.
For me, the big take away from Shurmur
JohnB : 12/5/2018 9:53 am : link
is that he hasn't lost the team. They are still rallying around him and playing hard for him despite an awful lose to the Eagles. After an unbelievably bad half against the Bears, they came out and pushed the Bears around and won a game that most thought would be a blow out.

He has made mistakes and he can learn but he knows how to keep a team together. That's worth a lot.

By 'credence,' don't you really mean 'air-time'? At the risk of using this writer's method of providing definitions to make a point, credence is the belief in something as being true. That's the OPPOSITE of what Papa was doing.

We found the author guys
If you understand the history of the Giants
arniefez : 12/5/2018 10:14 am : link
and how the Mara's operate you would understand why Bob Papa the face and voice of the Giants in house media is making a big deal about a little article that no one would ever see if he hadn't mentioned it.

The fact that it's on WFAN's web site is the biggest issue. Really the only issue. I'm guessing someone at WFAN got quite a Pat Hanlon phone call this morning.

This isn't new. Do some Mara homework. In the 60's Wellington Mara measured the column inches in the NY Times to see if Jets were getting more coverage than the Giants and would write letters to the Times complaining if the Jets did.

Does Bob Papa read the WFAN web site every morning checking on the Giants articles so he can decide whether to mention them on Sirius? How did he even see this?

That's correct - he was indeed doing the opposite of giving credence to this guys point. Air-time was what I should have said.
And I guess these guys have to get on the air and talk about something - so I guess that's why Papa brought it up.

You all think Shurmur is Lombardi now? A week ago, he was the dumbest fuck on the planet and now you all go ballistic over some Captain Obvious who wrote and article because of an overtime win against the sleepwalking Bears and their second string qb who had thrown a grand total of 110 passes over a 9 year career prior to Sunday. Say thank you to the fact that Trubisky was hurt and wasn't running for 10 yards a pop against us instead of taking 5 sacks.

I assure you after the next loss you will all think once again that Shurmur is the run-of-the-mill former coordinator he is.
Shurmur sucks so far...
trueblueinpw : 12/5/2018 11:41 am : link
His team didn’t quit after starting 1-7? Is that really something to hang our hats on? The problem is that his team started 1-7. The season was over after 8 games. In the decidedly mediocre NFC East this season is an unmitigated failure by any measure.

Shurmur was horrible as the HC in Cleveland. He’s been horrible here in NY. But the team high fives him after a TD, and they haven’t quit on him, so okay, there’s that. But that’s not enough and probably shouldn’t be enough to get a 2nd season. This team has been bad and there’s been more than a few instances of Shurmur looking like he doesn’t know what he’s doing.

And yeah, that article looks like it was written by a young kid. (News flash: sports writers just starting out aren’t often yet good writers). But, like the poster above, I agree the thrust of the article is pretty spot on.

ColHowPepper : 12/5/2018 11:46 am : link
there goes HomerJones45 again, never give up carrying the torch for Tom, and I say this in the belief that it's too early to assess what the Giants have in Shurmur, for many reasons.

Tom was a great coach of and representative for the franchise in his years here, and the Giants did not handle his departure well. But his time on the sideline had come to an end, Homer, too many failures in clock management (sound familiar?), challenge flags, and inability/refusal to address player issues, notably OBJ's WWW s..t show with Norman. And, yes, he, like McAdoo and Shurmur had to deal with the s..t show of a roster.

I don't know how much internet-based media you consume on a daily basis, but just because someone can get an article published on a web site doesn't mean they're credible. There's plenty of junk media out there.

Think of the mindless things people who are on live radio for the "flagship station of the NY Giants" say on a daily basis.

that Shurmur is actually turning this thing around. (the exact opposite of what the article suggests)

for the first time since 2016 i feel positive about the franchise. This article is about a year too late, last year the team quit on McAdoo.

I actually think Shurmur's only issues at this point is one or two bad calls during the course of the game (throwing the ball at the 30 yard line and taking the sack)

But outside of that, he certainly hasnt lost the team.
