Pleasant Surprise - Bennie Fowler

EricJ : 12/5/2018 9:42 am
I have been really impressed with this guy so far. He is not going to put up huge numbers. However, he makes the play we need and when we need it. He has done it virtually every game. The guy is bigger and tough. On a game thread I compared him to Sanu for that reason. He is becoming a reliable target and a decent find for us.

having a shitty record is the high priority on the waiver wire. I think we have some solid contributors with Brown, Fowler, Coleman and others. At least we know these guys will probably be here next year, where we knew the guys we picked up during previous seasons were most certainly gone the next year.
with gettleman's constant churn

of the backend of the roster, and even his in-season moves to get the OL settled down after omameh and flowers proved themselves to be garbage players, it really makes one wonder what the hell reese was doing (not doing) in this area over the course of his tenure here..

i can remember great, underrated contributors back in the coughlin days like kevin dockery and dominique hixon, even michael matthews, etc. i am assuming these finds were all gettleman.. but maybe i'm giving the guy too much credit..

It would be interesting to know who was responsible for those moves.
One of the things that is hard to measure..
EricJ : 12/5/2018 10:24 am : link
is the heart of a "football player". Reese and team obviously were blind men when it came to that. You see a handful of other organizations who are able to find gems. Solid contributors. Role players. Guys who do their job well.
Another Pleasant Surprise

Is Antonio Hamilton with his play on Special Teams. Would have liked to have seen him get some time learning how to play DB as almost anyone is better than Curtis Riley
Another sign the team is turning a corner

The role players step up and do the job instead of falling on their faces
Who?

I have no idea who half the players are on this team.

Yep, my thoughts as well. It's good to see.

Isn't Hamilton a CB? It's a good sign he hasn't seen more PT as the guys ahead of him have been playing well. Sy mentioned Jenkins/Webb as being one of the top starting duos the 2nd half of the season and I've been very impressed with Haley so far.

Obviously Jenkins is signed for next season as is Haley who then becomes an ERFA after 2019. It would be huge if he can develop into a solid nickel/slot CB, let alone a potential long term starting CB, especially since he won't hit UFA until after 2021 I believe and FA CBs are expensive.

Hopefully they can re-sign Webb this offseason to something like a 2 yr/$6M deal.

Hamilton is an RFA after this season and I imagine they will at least tender him.

Stupar still falls on his face at least once/game!
Don't get caught up with ham and eggers

He makes one play and you guys all go ga-ga over this shlub Fowler is a nothing. He's kicked around for 4 years and we are his third team this year. He was home on his couch when we signed him. If he's on this team next year, that's not exactly a sign of progress. There's no upside here.

Who here is going ga-ga for Bennie Fowler? God forbid, someone points out that he has contributed a few plays for us since we picked him up to be a role/depth player. But yeah, he's a total "ham and egger" with zero upside, like you have any clue.
I hope we see Evan Brown at center soon

With the season winding down it is time to give the young kids some playing time.

bottom of the roster going into the off season is a lot better than last year's. You certainly can't say we're spinning our wheels. I'm really looking forward to the off season this year.

Ham and eggers are a vast improvement over what we had (and continue to have) at the back end of the roster. Exchanging Roger Lewis Jr for Bennie Fowler helps you just that much. And as you continue to make moves like that, your team gets better.
You dont win championships without guys like this on your roster...
EricJ : 12/5/2018 5:08 pm : link
because without them, you have guys who screw up either physically or mentally too often.

If he can be a reliable WR for us then this is a win. We always talk about how our depth sucks.

This is extremely positive. I also mentioned multiple times that we have done a nice job with the secondary too. A few guys are making some plays.

is right. It's these "back end" guys who make or break you.
If he has cleaned up his scouting report problems
Bob in Newburgh : 12/6/2018 10:14 am : link
which were inopportune drops and rounded routes, his ceiling is at least an adequate #2 or good #3.

Has always had enough physical gifts to be an NFL player. Based on combine has plus body and vj, adequate height and speed.

The wildcard is the supposed 4.35 he ran at his pro day.
