We all know this. But then it touches you in some way.
Got a text this morning from a friend. He let me know that one of our former basketball players and a good friend of my son and their extended group of buddies, was in a coma after having been hit trying the navigate traffic while out running on campus at Stony Brook.
My son just hung out with him and their friends Friday after Thanksgiving, and he was scheduled to be home again for a month in about 10 days, after finishing up finals during his first semester away at college.
Just 18 years old, on scholarship as a cross country and track guy, he'd often tell us he "sucked" at basketball, but from about 4th grade until his sophomore year, he played in our AAU program, and was a great teammate that everyone rooted for when he got his minutes. Showed up, played hard, occasionally made a terrific play. At 6-foot-3 and maybe 155, he was a natural runner.
Smart kid, dry humor, only son ...
I texted my friend later to ask how things were going. If he had any updates. They would be "harvesting his organs" this afternoon, then they'd take him off life support, was how he responded.
Just hug your people tonight.
RIP Noah Farrelly.
I know the answer is you have to move on, you have to keep going, especially if there are other children.
But I can't imagine how.
But with distracted drivers today, this kind of tragic stuff happens. It's sad when anyone dies needlessly but an 18 year old with his whole life in front of him. Sorry to hear about this. Hits home that it was at USB.
Thoughts and prayers to the family on this tragic loss.
This is not the first time something like this has happened in that area. Hopefully more safety precautions will be put in place.
Just terrible for the family.
The jogger hit by a minivan and critically injured Tuesday morning on the Stony Brook University campus is a student at the school from upstate, police said Wednesday.
Noah Bernard Farrelly, 18, of Binghamton, was listed in critical condition after the 10:50 a.m. crash at Nicolls Road and Health Sciences Drive, police said.
In a news release, police said the crash occurred as Farrelly was jogging southbound and crossing the street even though he didn’t have the light. He was struck by a 2018 Dodge Caravan that police said was driven by Mohammad Refaat, 65, of Patchogue. Refaat was not hurt.
The vehicle was impounded for a safety check. Detectives investigating the accident asked anyone with information about the crash to call 631-854-8652.

We were talking at work a bit yesterday afternoon about why the police would take the vehicle. I didn't realize this, but a co-worker said newer vehicles have a "black box" that will store info in situations like this (air-bag deployment, etc., sudden impact, etc.).
I don't have i mediate access to it, but my daughter sent me something last night that showed the mini-van. By the appearance, it was a higher-speed collision than you'd expect on a college campus road. I understand I have no facts ... just surmising. Perhaps they wanted to get specific info about the speed, etc.

Same here.

Very sad. And just to add info, Nicolls Road is a fairly busy four lane divided highway. It's not technically on the SB campus but runs between the university and hospital, which are separate campuses. I grew up in the area.
