Eric from BBI : Admin : 12/5/2018 4:34 pm
FYI...
Landon Collins Done for the Season - ( New Window )
I have a bad feeling
mrvax : 12/5/2018 4:59 pm : link
that the Giants will be outbid for Collins next year.
Now we need a SS and a FS.
I might be in the minority

But I don’t think he would be worth the money he wants. Too one dimensional.

I agree. Same situation with Hankins.

I think it's probably split 50/50 after this season. He's going to be one of the highest paid safeties in the game, it's just the nature of free agency. At 10+ mill per year put me in the "no thanks" camp.
Make Him a LB

That would play to his strengths

that the recovery will be 4-6 months. Willie had the follow-up that is likely to happen. Collins won't be able to pass a physical when the first wave of FA occurs. Hence, he'll miss the big money by the time he can get medical clearance. We all saw the safety market dry up and languish last year so Collins will be looking to reestablish his value by taking a 1 yr. prove it deal here.
It should

The could tag him which should be a low number for Safety

Good thought but he would have to on board for the money end. Like his attitude and skill set for LB.

Don't hurt your shoulder patting yourself on the back.

One year in the neighborhood of 12 mill isn't a low number.
If Collins converts to a LB
ChicagoMarty : 12/5/2018 8:49 pm : link
then he would still have to cover TE's and RB's in pass coverage which he has demonstrated without a doubt that he cannot do.

Pass coverage is just not in Landon's skill set.

If I am Gettleman I am not shelling out $12M for a safety who is a liability in pass coverage.
Is the transition tag still used?
Ivan15 : 12/5/2018 9:33 pm : link
Even without a "poison pill", the transition tag might be an option. If another team signs Collins, the Giants would get something back for losing him.
He should be resign

He is a very good safety that can make tackles. He is not a good cover safety but doesn't need to be as that is more the free safeties job.

The transition tag is still used but it only gives the right to match an offer.

If the Giants were to decline to match, they would get nothing, not even the possible comp pick they would get for letting Collins walk without the transition tag.
Get well soon LC...

hope he can get healthy and the Giants can find a way to keep him. He's a valuable member of this defense.

RE: his coverage abilities

I think LC has shown ups and downs in coverage assignments. He clearly is not as good in coverage as other db's, particularly in space. Having said that, I think he might be unfairly judged.

I think he has to keep his weight down, stay healthy, and he has to be given a clear (and fair) assignment. What I mean by that is that he is never going to be able to cover the quickest scat backs in space, or the speediest WR's one on one. He is just a little too slow both in reaction and recovery time. This obviously gets compounded when he has to think too much or if he is injured. This year I have to wonder if he's been a little banged up, or if the complexity of Bettcher's defensive assignments have at times left him reacting at times.

I think he can cover well enough to handle most TE's and many RB's on most routes.

He plays a very valuable role in this defense and I think he'll be missed. It will be interesting to see what the Giants offer him.

RE: If Collins converts to a LB
AcesUp : 12/6/2018 10:35 am : link
There isn't a LB in the league that can cover Tarik Cohen out of the backfield and maybe 2-3 that can cover George Kittle. His coverage ability is a + in most situations at LB while a liability in the secondary. I think he naturally slides into that Buchanon role in Bettcher's defense, however he's only done so sparingly.
It's a conversation the organization should have with Collins for sure.

What really matters is that he's a playmaker. That matters in today's NFL more than ever now that offenses have the ability to do whatever they want. I know he has his warts but finding a player with his ability to create opportunities for his team is tough to find. I would be trying hard to make every reasonable attempt to sign him with a plan on how he'll be used going forward. There are two parties involved, so Collins would have to agree with the approach as well but if he were amenable, I wouldn't be afraid to go to 12m/yr. If he's not then I would be hesitant.

There's also something to be said about building a winning culture and an organization that pays its own before going outside will help that. It shows some loyalty to the players. Especially a player like Collins who plays hard no matter the circumstance.
Aces, that is far too sensible a post to be wasted here.
Reese's Pieces : 12/6/2018 11:49 am : link
Love the way that so many are always ready to get rid of a highly paid player who has an off year or isn't perfect.

Like this defense is so stacked that it doesn't need a player voted Pro Bowl two seasons in a row and first team All Pro in 2016. The rest of the league puts a high value on him.

Eric in his scouting report says he dramatically improved his play against the pass in 2016 and has rapidly developed into one of the best safeties in the NFL.

Disagree? Can't improve more?
I feel terribly for Landon

He has played with energy and fire in the middle of an absolutely awful situation and then, beyond the mishap of being drafted by a franchise in disarray, has the misfortune of suffering a very bad injury just before he has a chance for his payday. This is a personal tragedy for someone who has been giving his all to this team. I am genuinely sorry for him.
