Source: Arizona Paul Goldschmidt has been traded to the St. Louis Cardinals. Luke Weaver, Carson Kelly, Andy Young and a draft pick are headed back.
Kelly has struggled mightily in the majors but he still has potential and was once the best catcher prospect in baseball. Sometimes it takes catchers a while to make an impact in the majors.
Goldy will soon need an extension, but hes the kind of bat they drastically needed and a very good defender to boot. Weaver has been very up and down, so worth the gamble if hes the centerpiece

He is a free agent after next year. He is 31. Cards need to pay him now.
Hes in a walk year. Still a great trade for the Cards, even if it just gives them the upper hand in free agency. Hes probably in line for a nice 6 year $150M - $175M deal

Yes, pretty much. Their owner said they were going to spend "crazy money" this offseason.

Didn't their GM say something along the lines of spending "stupid money" this winter??
