How much of a pay cut for O.V.? What is he worth on the FA market? His cap hit is 19.5, dead money is 8 if cut.

Collins, he is a leader and a solid safety. Giving a big money for a safety that can't cover. What is a fair offer? Highest paid safety makes 13 a year. 5th highest is at 10.
Should say...

I don't like giving big money to....
Collins will be back on a 1yr prove it deal.

His surgery has a 4-6 month recovery. He won't be able to pass a physical at the start of FA. And once the big money dries up, he'll be left alone at the altar. He'll sign a 1 yr prove it deal to reestablish his market value.

OV - he can go pound rocks. He hasn't been worth his contract since the ink dried.
The dead money isn't what the focus should be on.

It is the cap savings and if that production can be replaced with that or less. So, can we get the production for 11.5 mil? Sadly, yes.
O.V. needs to move on. Don't care the discount. See ya.

The franchise tag will end up being Collins best option

Full guaranteed top safety money in a prove it year off injury. He was headed for that anyways, the injury is a nice save face for all involved.

It sux. No one could foresee that he would become injury prone once he came here.
He doesn't have to sign a prove it deal

with the Giants. He is a free agent at the end of the season if we don't franchise him.

You are missing the point. If he can't pass a physical at the start of FA, he'll miss the big money. His options will be limited. Look at this past off-season at the safety market. There were quite a few that went unsigned through the spring and early summer only to settle for less. He can do the same. But learning a new defense on another team won't help him reestablish his value. His best play will be to come back here for a year.

What world do you live in?

A healthy Collins was never getting paid 12 million in 2019 either in contract or on the tag.

Also, why do the Giants need to "save face"? They drafted a guy and honored his contract. What do they need to be embarrassed about?

Some of you are weird.
I would cut bait with both.

Offer Collins a fair one year contract
Rick in Dallas : 12/6/2018 6:44 am : link
Do not overpay for a in the box SS who is absolutely terrible in pass coverage.
He sort of reminds me of Roy Williams former Cowboy SS who was strong in run game but awful in pass coverage.
Collins

Will get a long term deal from a team with lots of cap space like San Fransisco.

OV won't take a paycut. He needs to be cut
I’d eat the 8mm

... so they want to cut everyone. Then they'll be amazed how hard it is to get better if you spend every year just replacing the guys you've cut. I live in Buffalo and know all about it.

Can you replace OV's production for 11 Million,? Maybe but it won't be a one year deal at 11; it'll be 5 years 55 Million and then you repeat the cut and replace process in two or three years.
Based on average salary
Doomster : 12/7/2018 7:30 am : link
he is the 4th highest paid, DE, or the 3rd highest paid, OLB......and his production is nowhere near that....

That being said, if cut he represents 8M in dead money.....and then, there is not one edge rusher on this team.....

I think you almost have to bite the bullet, and keep him, hoping that next year is the year he finally has an injury free year, and then we only have to get one edge rusher instead of two....

What it comes down to is, what is the plan for this team next year? To still be in rebuild mode, or will we focus on a few key spots to try to be a contender?

If still in rebuild mode, then I would cut him.....
