Pending physical.
4 years $70 million

That's a crazy deal.
His elbow is held together by duct tape and baling wire

The market is definately
JPinstripes : 12/6/2018 10:51 am : link
paying a premium on successful small recent sample sizes with the Corbin and Eovaldi deals.
67.5 Million - still a big overpay IMHO

According to a source, Eovaldis deal is four years and $67.5 million.
I think this is a case where the Red Sox had no choice
rich in DC : 12/6/2018 11:02 am : link
They have been TERRIBLE at developing their own SP- in fact, any pitching at all. As a result, they have been heavily dependent on getting SP from other teams.

The Sox also have some hard FA decision coming on SP- and will need to have signed options in hand when those choices come due.

Sale is a FA at the end of 2019. So is Porcello.

With Eovaldi and Price in hand, they are not over a barrel having to sign both- and can go shopping in the market.
its a tough spot for the Sox
Dankbeerman : 12/6/2018 11:09 am : link
Both Nate and Price are the reason they won this year and mow they will take up 40 mil a year and I dont know that you an trust them to stay healthy and effective.
I think there's a good chance
Metnut : 12/6/2018 11:12 am : link
he's worth at least 6-7 wins which is what they are paying him for under that contract.

Keeping together as many pieces as you can from a 100+ win world series champion seems like a good idea. IMO, the Corbin deal is far more riskier.
Supply/demand...
Dan in the Springs : 12/6/2018 11:15 am : link
we might not like it and stick to our guns, but it's costing a LOT to pick up FA pitchers of any kind of quality.

Most NYY fans expect them to come up with another #2 or 3 type pitcher. Good luck Cashman.
I really
Steve in Greenwich : 12/6/2018 11:20 am : link
thought with the deployment of the "opener" and how much "bullpenning" games we saw in the playoffs that Owners / GM's were going to squash the starting pitching market. These Corbin / Eovaldi deals certainly don't look as such. You would think after watching this past playoffs where teams were looking to pull their starting pitching in the 4th/5th innings in order to get to their bullpens that the prices would go down on these pitchers. I guess not.
The development of the cutter

has mad him a much better pitcher. I "fear" him much more than Price.

Oh horseshit. He threw a cutter in 2016 too and was dogshit.

3 playoff starts don't erase the rest of his career.
Phew!
Stan in LA : 12/6/2018 11:42 am : link
Thought the Yanks would overpay him. Dodged a bullet.

Wrong, he was just barely throwing it before he blew the elbow out. And he was pitching pretty well when he blew the elbow out - was reported in RAB on one of their assessments of the available pitchers.

Yeah, we get it, you don't like him, so he sucks. He looked pretty suckie making the Yanks look like morons last year, didn't he?
From Jack Curry...
LarmerTJR : 12/6/2018 12:13 pm : link
Hearing Yankees never made official 5-year, $100M offer to Corbin. Told him theyd be comfortable w/ 4 or 5 years for $17M to $20M per year. So $100M was floated. When Corbin said he was seeking Darvish money, NY didnt make offer.

Personally, passing on Eovaldi was an easy decision for me. I like the guy and Im glad he got paid after all hes dealt with in his career. But a two-time Tommy John surgery guy who lives and dies with max effort velocity is risky as hell. More risk than Im willing to assume at that price. Also, the this enigmatic pitcher has figured it out! profile is fools gold more often than not.
See, that's exactly my point
Greg from LI : 12/6/2018 12:17 pm : link
Oh, he pitched well against the Yankees so we have to sign him! Never mind the fact that most of the rest of the league lit his ass up like the scrub piece of shit he was for the Yankees.
Well we better do something else
Giant John : 12/6/2018 12:35 pm : link
To improve our starting pitching otherwise the Yanks my be watching again like the rest of us do.
Yankees will sign Happ
Matt in SGS : 12/6/2018 12:36 pm : link
and honestly, when they got Paxton, getting Happ isn't the worst idea. He's fine as a #4 pitcher. He won't cost much in terms of dollars and years.

But Hal better get off his wallet and look at Machado or Harper. I still think they that are going to go after Harper and play him in left and look to plug in a stopgap until Didi comes back.
This.......

Aaron Nola, Jacob deGrom, and Max Scherzer all put up more bWAR in 2018 than Nate Eovaldi has racked up in his career.
Another reason
ajr2456 : 12/6/2018 12:41 pm : link
why Kyler Murray should choose baseball. An average to below average player just got that check.

That's a lot of money for a guy who has had arm problem and put together won solid year, glad it was the yanks.
I'll say it over and over
Stu11 : 12/6/2018 1:11 pm : link
Eovaldi is 5 and 5. 5 great starts then 5 clunkers. Good for him and his family that one of the great 5's were the playoffs last year. Cutter shmutter he is all about the fastball.if he keeps it at the top of the strike zone he is real tough. When it slips down a bit he gets torched. Give me Happ back and I'm fine.

If you followed the season, he came back strong velocity wise from the TJs, but had some type of problem in his mechanics by mid season (the 5 losses). Pedro noticed it in July, they shut him down and worked with Pedro for a couple of weeks. Once he resumed, he got better and better with each start, throwing lights out as he moved to the playoffs. There was a reason they kept calling on him in the late innings and not Price (who had similar releif results the previous year).

They already did with Paxson. They chose not to overpay Corbin or Eovaldi. Both players are being paid for 2018 and not their careers. If both revert back to their pre-2018 selves those teams will greatly regret those contracts.

Don't be that panicky Yankee fan that wants to throw money at people cause you are nervous. That is how you end up making bad deals. The Red Sox are paying Eovaldi for the WS and will live with to regret it but it's understandable. The correct move would have been to let him walk but they are rewarding someone who performed for them and praying the last three months of 2018 wasn't a fluke.

Many people have "fixed" Eovaldi over his career only to see him implode again. The Red Sox got a nice little run out of him. Given his numerous arm injuries, and any consistent lack of success, i would have walked away. But I understand they are going to ride with the guys who won in 2018 and you can't fault them for it.

I hear ya. Price/Sale/Eovaldi is pretty risky at these prices - but pitching is a risky business anyway (even healthy pitching) and the reward would be another strong push to WS for a couple of years. Risk is they bite for a few years and then restock (like the Yanks are doing now).
on balance

i'll take Severino/Paxton/Tanaka/Kikuchi-Montgomery over Sale/Price/Porcello/Eovaldi.

.

He was just starting to develop his cutter at the end of his time here, then had the TJS. Now he has refined the cutter at 92-95 MPH. That is a big outlay for this pitcher though. The Yanks need to find another starter,
may I suggest Happ at this point. The starters are dropping like flies, and Carrasco got an extension.
Indians just extended Carrasco so he isn't going anywhere

This Kikuchi guy intrigues me, but I wonder if he's only interested in the West Coast like Ohtani.
