He's no spring chicken. It would take anyone a long time to even attempt to come back from that. Rich Seubert missed almost two seasons and he was only 24 when he broke his leg. Smith is 34.
36.6 mil in dead money. Would have to either June 1 release or keep him on the roster for a year. To Bad He seemed to be an upgrade over Cousins. Wish him the best

Yeah, you and me both. Lots of people on here thought he would just come back for the money, but he's made plenty of it at this point, and the injury was brutal.
a 16-game season only three times in his career. i also disagree that he was an upgrade over cousins. smith has thrown for 10 TDs prior to the leg injury. AP had been their whole offense this year. i don't dislike the guy by any stretch, but he's been average and injury prone over the course of his career.

but this is why I never blame a player for holding out or not accepting a contract.. the next play could be your last play and may be the last time you are able to stand on both your feet..

They can reach an injury settlement can't they?
unless they somehow get back the signing bonus, not sure how they can reduce that dead cap, but that level of understanding of the cap is over my head
had staph in my lower leg after surgery to address compartment syndrome. Took a lot of debridement procedures and IV vancomyacin after the first antibiotics didn't work. Still has left me with some muscular and sensory deficits in that leg -- praying he avoids those!

Actually cut him or not $70 million of his $92 million contract is guaranteed for injury. He will impact their cap for a long time.

It is worse than what you stated. His signing bonus of $27M was guaranteed along with his 2018/2019 salaries ($13M/$15M). On top of that, his 2020 salary is guaranteed for injury only so tack on an additional ($16M). A grand total of $71M is guaranteed.

Pretty sure they can't get the signing bonus back, but his base salary for 2019 is fully guaranteed which makes it virtually impossible to cut him since combined with his SB he would have ~$37M in dead money.
Not really sure why Smith would give up that money though since the whole purpose of gtd money is to protect the player in this type of event. Maybe the settlement would allow them to restructure how that money hits the cap though? I'd guess at best they can split it across the 2019/2020 caps.

Or what dj said. Although, he has it at $70M and I have it at $71M. My math could be off, but when you are in that stratosphere of guaranteed money, a mil here or there is inconsequential.

me too, jpkmets, after ACL replacement. Typical course of vanco for in-bone infection is six months. Since vancomycin is too viscous to administer through a catheter, it has to be done via pic line, inserted in big vein inside upper arm, line threaded right into and inside the vena cavum. Wonderful to walk around with that for six months.
That, and typically also, the pic line at site of insertion, gets clogged from the twice daily vanco, wonderful, have to to to ER to get it cleaned out. Store the vanco bags at home in the fridge, set up the drip, bag and attachment twice a day. NOT fun.

First couple of times with the Vanco they put it in too fast and I got what is called "Red Man Syndrome" . sudden itching and all this red rash. It was just brutal.
But, I'm grateful for that drug. I'd have lost my lower leg w/o it (or worse).
I don't like to hear 'infection' in this context Â
i thought his career was over right when it happened

Not the right time to be talking about his stats.

100%

The Skins had a press conference on it.
His 2018 and '19 salaries were fully guaranteed
2019 is 16 Million
2020 at 16 million guaranteed for injury.

He gets a lot of criticism but the numbers speak for themselves: he's been a winner, and that's not easy to do regardless of how good your team is.
Not exactly, closer to Theismann's. Seubert's was worse - he broke the tibia, fibula, AND his ankle. Required five surgeries.

but I believe 36 mil year one and the remaining 35 over the term of the contract. Just guessing. Is this the Rich Seubert injury?

Both were disasters and it was a miracle Seubert came back, but he plays OL and he was young when it happened.
Alex Smith's career ended when he sustained that injury. I prayed he doesn't lose his leg.
Bizarre and eerie set of similarities to say the least.
