NGT: Washington's Sudden QB Hell

clatterbuck : 12/6/2018 12:41 pm
of a different kind. The terrible news about Alex Smith plus McCoy's injury seems to make drafting a QB an imperative and/or rolling the dice on a vet (Foles, Winston, Flacco, Carr?). And, do you keep Gruden around for this or opt for bringing in a new HC to work with a new QB? And another team lookng to draft a QB could affect Giants. Maybe they shouldn't have played games and just paid Counsins.
They are in QB hell

They should just draft a QB, and groom him and take their lumps. But Snyder is a moron and will probably make some stupid trade for a QB that they cant win with.

Oh wait, they did that already. Might as well try it again.

Hindsight says you pay Cousins...
BamaBlue : 12/6/2018 12:44 pm : link
reality was that Alex Smith was an upgrade. When he went down, the Redskins were poised to take the division. Everything went south with the injury to Smith.

Redskins are in a deep hole at QB. They will be a player in both free agency and in the draft.

Yeah I was going to say, Cousin is way better than Alex Smith. Smith had ONE good year which obviously has turned out to be an outlier.

I'm not saying Cousins was some world-beater, but they should have just paid him.

One of the ways in which the Giants have been disadvantaged
cosmicj : 12/6/2018 1:03 pm : link
in the division race the last 2-3 years is that the Eagles & Boys have been working with cost-controlled QBs. (Dallas has a dead cap hit of $8M for Romo this season but even then they are working with a tiny cap number for Dak, which is under $1M this season.) The Redskins have been paying about the league average for Cousins the last few seasons and Smith this season. Meanwhile, we have been paying Eli a lot for some at best middling performance.

By 2020, that disadvantage will flip. Wentz and Prescott will get big contracts. Wentz's could be ginormous. Meanwhile, the Skins are saddled with this Smith hit, which will probably disable the team in 2019 and probably impact them in 2020. They'll be paying for a solid NFL QB and may not have one on the roster. And by 2020, the Giants will presumably be working with a cost-controlled QB and hopefully a promising one.

It's darkest before the dawn, boys.
I beg to differ on the better QB for Washington...
BamaBlue : 12/6/2018 1:07 pm : link
how many seasons did Kirk Cousins have the Redskins poised for a playoff position in late November? He may have been the better skills QB, but Cousins and Washington were flatlined and failure was the ONLY option. Smith wanted to be in Washington and was doing a far superior job on the field.

Yeah, I'd take Smith over Cousins any day of the week.

they release Smith in the offseason, they have to take a $21.6M cap hit. He may never play again. McCoy is a journeyman who has also broken his leg, and will therefore be limited in terms of training deep into the offseason.

They are in QB hell. My guess is that they release Smith, hope McCoy can be ready by midseason, sign and start another veteran, and use a high pick on a QB.
I hate to say it because what's happening with Smith is unfortunate

Neither one was worth the money each was paid. I kind of respect how DC handled the Cousins situation - sure, they paid a hell of an AAV for him, but there was no long-term commitment. Then they let him go but doubled down on Alex Smith. I think Smith is slightly better, but that contract!

Assuming Smith can't play again, any capologists know what DC's hit will be moving forward? If it is still significant, they almost have to go with drafting a QB, who would be more fiscally feasible than paying a FA.

You are correct about the Eagles/Cowboys but definitely not about the Redskins. Cousins played two years under franchise tenders. He was getting compensated incredibly well. They completely crapped the bed with him.

To join the Smith vs. Cousins discussion... Smith got injured as the weather was starting to change. I can't see how he could play in NJ, Washington or Philly in a typical winter.

He rarely ever threw deep passes, so I dont think wind and weather was much of a concern to limit him. Hes an incredibly risk-averse passer.

They wouldn't have won jack shit with Cousins making that bank.

Vikings have a much better cast and they're still fighting for a wildcard.

And can everyone stop with the Bridgewater nonsense? #1 he's with the Saints and they gave up a 3rd for him #2 he was never above average to begin with #3 he's highly suspect with bad knee injuries

Ummm I mean they were 6-3 when he went down and barely lost to the Texans (the game Smith went out). I disagree with the notion that they couldn't win with Alex Smith. I'm also not saying Smith is a great QB, but put him on a decent team and he gets you W's. That's always been his M.O. and he's proven it time and time again with multiple teams.

And I don't think it's 100% black-and-white whether or not Smith was an upgrade over Cousins or not. Cousins is probably overall a better pure passer, but he's had problems in his career not feeling pressure and stepping up in the pocket and it's led to him turning the ball over at crucial times. The "eye test" may say that Cousins is better but I mean he's 6-5-1 with a team that went to the NFCCG last year while Smith was 6-3 with the Redskins before he went down and had a history of winning with the 49ers and Chiefs as well (albeit regular season winning but still the point is he has stacked W's throughout his career and that is by no means easy to do no matter how good your team is).

I think people seem to look at things too black-and-white and say "oh that QB only won because he was on a great team" or "that QB is overrated he's captain check down" etc. Tom Brady has won 5 Super Bowls and he's a very conservative checkdown-type passer. Sure he has a great arm as well but I just think there's more to being a winning QB than just being a great thrower of the ball and Alex Smith proved throughout his career that he is a winning QB.

W-L Record (career):

Smith: 94-66-1
Cousins: 32-35-2

Kirk Cousins may look "better" but the fact is he is 30 years old and the best record he's ever had as a starter is 9-7, which Alex Smith looked poised to possibly beat in his first year with the same exact team Cousins was with his entire career if he hadn't gone down. Hell Cousins is technically on a more talented than Smith this year and has a worse Win%.

I think more highly of Smith than most, but he is not better than Cousins. No way. This year the skins have a defense and run game that Cousins never had there. Smith is playing even more conservative than usual and McCoy looked every bit as effective as Smith and even almost won the game Smith was costing them against the Texans. Smith was not the reason they were winning. Sanchez however is a humongous step down.
Anyhow I wish him the best. It has to be scary
