Let me start by saying I think Alex Smith is a class guy. A hard working player and a good man and I feel terrible about his injury. Wish it did not happen. That said, the cap ramifications the Redskins will deal with could not happen to a more deserving owner then Dan Snyder and a team president in Bruce Allen.
When Smith signed his extension in Washington it was a 4 year extension worth $92 million, with $70 million in guarantees.
$27 million bonus spread out over 5 years ($5.4 Million per year)
His 2018 salary of $13 Million is fully guaranteed
2019 Salary of $15 Million is fully guaranteed giving him a cap number of $20.4 Million
His 2020 Salary of $16 Million is Guaranteed for injury giving him a 2020 cap number of $21.4 Million.
So the Redskkns most likely ha e $20 Million per year against the cap for a player who won’t play a down. Then when they can cut him in 2021, he will count either $10.8 million against their cap or $5.4 in 2021 and $5.4 in 2022 if they June 1 him.
Skins fans here in Maryland are crying how it’s unfair they get the cap hit and I am laughing.
Feel awful for the man and the player. Laughing at the franchise. Now let’s win Sunday.
Also, while the contract was dumb because of his age and ability, those negatives didn't have anything to do with why this won't work out for Washington. They're eating the guarantees because the guy suffered a once in a decade injury.
There may be some verbiage in the contract that helps the skins out. Are you sure about your numbers and guarantees?
It was a stupid contract....the 2020 salary was going to be guaranteed once the 2019 year basically started......but if he can no longer play, it's guaranteed now....
So Smith got 40M this year for one td per game......
Football is the ultimate team sport which requires much more than a QB. I understand the value that a good QB gives toward a teams chances of winning but $70 mill guaranteed is just a little crazy for a 36 year old QB.
I couldn't care less about the owner(s).
I actually did pray for Alex yesterday when I found out about the leg infection.
I couldn't care less about the owner(s).
This thread is in bad taste. There are very few people that walk this earth that dislike the Skins more than I do, but I’m not even thinking about this in terms of football. Alex Smith is in a frightening position. Infections are bad shit. He could lose his leg or worse.
This. It's OK to post details about Smith's cap implications, but to take delight in it is tasteless, given what he is going through.

with the OP. However I do feel bad a bit for a fanbase to lose their starting QB for an indefinite period of time.

I see your point. Re-post after Alex Smith is out of the woods. People often get serious infections in a hospital. We should all pray for AS or wish him well.
If Smith chooses to retire, I don't know if the cap hit is adjusted somehow.
Still sucks though. I hope Smith recovers and has a normal life, even if no longer a career.
