Can the Giants become a Playoff

Doomster : 12/7/2018 8:20 am
team next season? Absolutely.....

I think, if they can fix the OL, and find a 3rd WR, this offense can do some serious damage.....While Brown has made the OL better, he is not the answer at RG.....but C and RT are more of a concern....If we can sign Brown at a reasonable offer, and use the draft/FAcy for the other two spots, it's scary to think of what Barkley could do with an adequate OL in front of him....

As for QB, what are our alternatives? I think we win maybe one or possibly two more games this year.....that will put us easily out of the top 10......and a shot at a QB in the draft....

So, it's either Eli, or Lauletta, or some FA QB.....

Eli can function with an OL in front of him, and with a running game....but he will be another year older.....and his arm strength on long passes has diminished already.....If EE can get his head out of his ass, and Shurm's offense opens up, instead of being conservative, even Eli might be the best choice...of course, we have no idea what we have in Lauletta.....but an alternative to Eli must be looked into....

AS for the defense, we need an edge rusher bad.....Do you pay OV 15M next year, and hope he finally has an injury free year? You do, if you think this team can contend....you don't if you are still in rebuild mode....but if you keep him, then you only need one edge rusher instead of two.....Can Beal be the other corner? Huge question mark.....I think we need a play making FS, much more than we need a Landon Collins.....and a coverage linebacker is a huge necessity....

I am not crazy about Shurm and Bettcher, or even DG.....but I don't think the front office is going to make any changes....so they are here, at least for another year....maybe they learn from their mistakes, maybe they don't......

But this off season, and the decisions made on Eli, OV, Jenkins, Collins, etc. and how they will impact the following season, will finally show what "plan" DG has had all along....we either continue the rebuild, or we go for it.....there are no teams out there that are head and shoulders above the others....the right moves, and getting lucky in the draft and FAcy, can turn this team around.....

But sooner rather than later, the QB question has to be resolved....
Eli can function

Yes.

But it s time to get the next guy here
I Think Eli, OV and Collins Will Be Gone
Jim in Tampa : 12/7/2018 8:37 am : link
If Jenkins continues playing to his recent standards I hope they keep him.

I don't agree that another win or two puts them out of the running for a RD 1 QB. I think Herbert will come out this year and be gone before the Giants pick. But they might like one or more of the QBs in that second tier... Grier, Jones or Lock. If they do then one or two of those QBs will likely be available when they pick.
More importantly right now

Can the Giants become a Playoff team by the end of this month! :)
We have to move on
NYG007 : 12/7/2018 8:52 am : link
From Eli. Look at our record the last 6 years. I re-watch every game, as I am sure many of you die hards do. Eli leaves many, many drives per game unfinished with bad throws, rushed throws or simply poor decisions. Even after 15 years, he does.

Do I love the guy as a Giants fan? Yes. Always will, we will not WIN again with Eli. We simply need something more than what he offers in today's NFL.

Any Giants team that goes into 2019 with Eli is just wasting another year. He's an all time Giants great who needs to join the All Timers in post Giants history.
Not this year of course
5BowlsSoon : 12/7/2018 8:58 am : link
As for next year, Eli will be one year older and unless he has great pocket protection he is limited and not as accurate as we would like. We have to groom his replacement ASAP and we definitely need at least one more quality lineman and make sure we resign Brown.

If we don't resign Collins and give him too much money I think our secondary becomes the main focus off concern after a pass rushing lineman. If we can add quality players in secondary and a solid pass rusher we can be highly competitive I believe on defense.
2019 might have a tougher slate of opponents than 2018
The_Boss : 12/7/2018 9:11 am : link
And we generally suck inter division. We play the NFC North and AFC East. It’s possible we improve enough. Dallas and Philadelphia are better.
Yes absolutely if they can
JCin332 : 12/7/2018 9:20 am : link
continue to upgrade OL and Defense through continued good drafting and hopefully better FA signings...

And in all probability Eli will be the QB next year...he can still play...
Still quite a few areas that needs to solidify
micky : 12/7/2018 9:25 am : link
Yet that is, imo, going to take at "least" (pending the decision making process of team) another two off seasons

Can they make the playoffs in 2019, it could happen , but is the top teams in division going AGAIN at or near .500? Take a lot of luck. Plus, lets not get fooled by this second half of season, facing backups, and weaker teams. Be careful!

If things fall right in FA (which sometimes doesnt) and draft players step in etc etc then id say good chance giants could be around .500 next season.

Problem is, longer you go with Eli, the further down the line, theyll step back again on finding the replacement and stepping in. Youd like to start that process next season rather then later

Im looking at 2020 or 2021 to be on track unless theyre still scrambling at the qb position

The question for management should be are the Giants heading toward the foundation of a team that can produce a run like 2006-2011, with consistent double-digit win seasons.

The biggest variable is if you have the right QB to get you to and succeed in that window.

I clearly don't think that is Manning. His arrow is pointing down, and the arrow of talent surrounding him is starting to point up.

The Giants need both of those arrows pointing up solidly to get back to a dominant run.

Tougher slate? I disagree with that you have Chicago in the north Vikings aren’t that good Detroit is Detroit Green Bay from what I’m hearing is about to blow it up afc eastyou got the pats and the rest are bad teams

Jim, if so the big question is do they bring back Eli for another year? Or, cut him, save $17M and let the rookie QB take his lumps?

I think it's time to bring in a young QB and save some cap % for a few years.
Becoming a playoff team in 19 or 20
ajr2456 : 12/7/2018 10:15 am : link
has an easier path by making a change at QB.

Better QB play can cover up for a lot of other holes on this team that won't be filled in one off season.

Chicago and Minnesota when healthy are much better teams than the Giants. Detroit and GB in their current states are both better, we'll see about next year.

NOT

and a shot at a QB in the draft....

Because of this, it's Eli, Lauletta, or someone from FAcy....that's why I think they stick with Eli one more season, even with his shortcomings....
we absolutely can become a playoff team
markky : 12/7/2018 10:34 am : link
upgrade your 3 weakest starters without opening up any new weaknesses(i.e. staying neutral across the other 19 positions) and we're there.

regarding getting a QB, remember the draft positions of:

Patrick Mahomes: 10
Aaron Rodgers: 24
Big Ben: 11

First rounders, but not in the top 5 picks.
not if they replace
Peter from NH (formerly CT) : 12/7/2018 10:42 am : link
Eli with a rookie. If they leave him in place - then maybe.
Sure, anything's possible.
Mike in Long Beach : 12/7/2018 10:44 am : link
But there's a sort of conundrum in the way Giants fans think about this team, IMO. There's a lot of talk of this team being closer than we originally thought, but I'm of the opinion we really are not close at all.

Saquon Barkley is truly doing things rarely (if ever) seen out of a rookie running back, and is doing so on a 4-8 football team where the coach time and time again has inexplicably abandoned the running game. So with all that said, I think Barkley has managed to cover up a litany of tremendous holes in the team... and when you're saying that about a player on a team with a .333 winning percentage, you know it's bad.

Either Saquon Barkley is a once-in-a-lifetime-back or the Giants are closer to a playoff birth than we thought. I'm of the opinion you can't have it both ways. And I think Saquon is a once-in-a-lifetime back, and thus, I think this is a really, really bad football team. There's no one who can rush the passer. We have a star safety but he can't cover anyone. Our only good corner is on an atrocious contract. Our first round tight end can't block. Our offensive line is putrid and our quarterback is amongst the oldest in the league.

Right now we have good wide receivers, a great kicker, and a great running back.

I think we're two years away from contending.
If they get the kind of injury luck...
Dan in the Springs : 12/7/2018 10:47 am : link
they had this year, I fully expect them to be contending for a playoff position next year. If they continue their trajectory of improvement they might even be considered dangerous in the playoffs.

Suprised at your take Doomster - positive takes are not usually what you're known for.
No ....

Doing the same thing over and over
Dnew15 : 12/7/2018 10:54 am : link
again and expecting different results is no way to plan for a playoff run in 2019 or beyond.
Absolutely.
Boy Cord : 12/7/2018 10:59 am : link
Add a C amd RT and this offense will be competent with explosive potential. Plus, the competition sucks. I know power rankings mean crap, but look at the teams that are in the back end of the Top-10 let alone Top-20. Garbage. The defense is an issue, but it will be year two with Bettcher. We are looking for incremental improvement on defense from sucking to being competent. Competent gets the Giants in the playoffs.

I disagree with this. Games against the Jets (road game), Dolphins & Bills. We have a chance to link up with TB & Arizona. I think the schedule is finally somewhat manageable.

with a guy like SB, we can..this is Saquons team now
As mentioned in other thread

We're in a good sit compared to NFC East and have options. Get rid of Eli contract, Wash has Smith, Philly signs Wentz soon, and hopefully Jones backs up the Brink truck for Prescott. He has his own yogurt commercial.
if we had an OL
fkap : 12/7/2018 1:41 pm : link
from the start this year, we'd be in the mix for the playoffs.

Yes, it is time to look for Eli's replacement, but if we don't draft one, Eli is just as good as any of the meh QB's we're going to pick up in FA. He still has life in him, so there's no need to reach for a QB.

Work on the OL and D. If a QB falls in our lap...hooray
Eli with a better oline can still be productive. His long game is no
SterlingArcher : 12/7/2018 2:36 pm : link
longer what it was but his short game still very good. No free agent qb or rookie qb would do what Eli can do for at least one year. To draft a qb in the 1st round and sit him is ridiculous, you can not make that kind of investment and sit him. You just know if they start a rookie qb the first int he throws the yelling about being a bust will be deafening. Draft olinemen high and rebuild the oline to protect Eli and give Barkley some room to run.

Not so sure about point one.

And one of the best QBs this year was taken first round by a playoff team and sat a year. It seems to have paid off.
Need to get a clue if you really think the Giants with Eli
Jimmy Googs : 12/7/2018 3:18 pm : link
will get back to the playoffs. It’s just simply not going happen, short of the the other 3 divisional foes going down in plane crashes.

Have to get a new guy under center. While I can follow the general theme of getting better at other positions with draft collateral if the QBs you like the most are out of reach or not available. However I do not subscribe to the idea that this can exist every year.

We have kicked the shit out of that can down the road already...
Yes, but it's unlikely.
CT Charlie : 12/7/2018 4:24 pm : link
There's every reason to believe the Cowboys, Eagles and Skins will be better, too. And there's no way we'll have any depth, except at running back - and Gallman, who's an excellent backup, is no Saquon.
To everybody talking
OC2.0 : 12/7/2018 8:10 pm : link
About being playoff contenders next year just consider that we lost 7 games by 7 or less points. So yes with some moves F/A-draft we can be in the div. mix imo
It's such a year to year league.
Ten Ton Hammer : 12/7/2018 8:30 pm : link
Consider how lucky the 2018 Giants have been with health.

They might never have another year this healthy again.
Before
darren in pdx : 12/7/2018 8:58 pm : link
the season I thought, although small, there was a chance they could this year..way wrong on that. And early results made me concede that they might be at least two seasons away. With Barkley improving so rapidly it gives hope that with a couple more hits on the o-line and d-line that it feels almost attainable. They're still too mistake-prone, and I'm unsure about Shurmur that 9-7 feels like where next season will top off. I think Shurmur needs to either give up playcalling or find an assistant head coach that can take on clock management and help with decision making.
Every time I want to write this defense off as terrible
djm : 12/7/2018 9:07 pm : link
They show some capability like last Sunday against the bears. But the entire unit still needs a lot of help.... if the giants can fix the D we’re good to go for the most part. Giants don’t win shit without a real defense. Never have. We’d be a playoff team right now if the defense was very good.
But the defense was never really expected to be very good in 2018
Jimmy Googs : 12/8/2018 7:49 am : link
so not sure whats the point of that comment. OV's preseason injury, nobody with pass rush skills, installing a new defensive 3-4 scheme with avg LBs (at best), and looking for Eli Apple to be a plus starter.

Defense sits #24 in yards allowed/game and #25 in points allowed/game. These seem on par with expectations.

We were never going to be good...
If I was GM I’d aim for two years from now and somehow land
yatqb : 12/8/2018 8:12 am : link
our next GB this offseason. Eli’s not the long term answer, so take our lumps for another year and build a new foundation.
