How did Laudetta do in his debut?

spike : 12/9/2018 8:43 pm
We were out in NYC today so we missed the game. I was shocked they had a 40-0 lead..

Lack of arm talent was obvious.
The_Boss : 12/9/2018 8:45 pm : link
Hopefully he gets more opportunities down the stretch.
can't sugarcoat it -
Del Shofner : 12/9/2018 8:46 pm : link
he didn't look good.
Horrendous .
PaulN : 12/9/2018 8:46 pm : link
To be kind. Someone will give the excuses, but every pass except for one he threw, out of 6 or 7, could or should have been intercepted. This kid is no future starting QB in this league.

Mdgiantsfan : 12/9/2018 8:49 pm : link
Not good, but play caller did him no favors. Run, run, pass. Wish they would have given him some better calls to get into a rhythm.
Watch Shurmur's post-game press conference.
Diver_Down : 12/9/2018 8:49 pm : link
He sneered when the questions steered towards Kyle. He said (I'm paraphrasing), "Do you like what you have been asking to see?".
He could performed like we're up stuck with Manny another year or two

His arm strength was the least of his problems. The game was much too fast for him. He was never comfortable.
Not good.

But it's not fair to make any lasting judgments based on what happened today.

isn't that the case for ALL rookie QBs?
He looked like a rookie qb
B in ALB : 12/9/2018 8:53 pm : link
with very questionable skills in mop up duty playing in a blowout game protected by a ham n egg offensive line against a team begging him to throw to backup receivers while loading the box.

Predictably, he was horrific.
Let's be clear. There was no pressure on him.
Diver_Down : 12/9/2018 8:55 pm : link
The score was 40-0 when he was tasked with handing off and complete short passes. Well, he was awesome at handing off the ball and his one completion to the defender.

As he rightfully should.

Lauletta is terrible.
He played like most rookies
Beer Man : 12/9/2018 8:58 pm : link
in their debut. He was obviously nervous and pumped full of adrenalin. Lets throw him out there few more times before throwing him to the curb. Plus, I doubt he expected to play and saw very few first team snaps during the week.
Looked like a rookie QB.

It wasnt the stats it was the arm strength

Mayfield, Allen, Darnold, Rosen have all had crappy games too. But at least with those guys, you can see NFL type arms.

And I think Pat knows that based on what he sees in practice. It is just that the Jackals have been hounding him over the past few weeks every p.c. about Kyle. Seeing Kyle miss his passes except to the opponent and not generate a single drive was confirmation of what he has been seeing in practice.

It was still a small sample size and Kyle should get more, but in his debut performance, it was underwhelming. It's not as if he was tasked with orchestrating a game winning drive. He was tasked with just playing QB with zero chance of losing the game.
Arm is Not Weak...
Rafflee : 12/9/2018 9:10 pm : link
It’s INADEQUATE

You’d expect a QB on an NFL Depth chart to have a capable arm, and arm talent itself is often over rated versus all the other things QBs must do..... but you need to assume at least baseline ability—— I don’t see it

I’d hope he’ll prove me wrong
Webb

How bad must Webb be if he was released in favor of Lauletta .

Sammo85 : 12/9/2018 9:14 pm : link
Both physically and in terms of his processing and decision making.

It also looks and sounds like Shurmur may not be enamored with him.
The Giants put him in a no win situation
Big Rick in FL : 12/9/2018 9:15 pm : link
Odell was already out. They sat Saquon. Don't remember for sure, but I don't think Shep was playing.

Is any QB going to succeed with Gallman, Penny, Russell Sheperd, Bennie Fowler & Evan Engram as is weapons? I don't think so. Stupid move for the Giants to try and evaluate him with the starters out of the game.

Not sure. I’m waiting to hear what Chris Collingsworth and Steve Spagnola have to say about his debut.
It was a complete and utter drop off
mattlawson : 12/9/2018 9:22 pm : link
Granted he didn’t have Saquon but the throws he did attempt only one was any good and under pressure he should have been picked off twice.
I would have liked to see him do better, but
Bill in UT : 12/9/2018 9:26 pm : link
He was just in there playing like the coach told him just don't lose. I missed his first series, with a pick, I guess, but after that it was run, run, third and long pass. And he didn't have Barkley. If he was playing to come back from behind, it would have been a whole different situation. I hope he gets a few more chances before we pass judgement
Giants
Sammo85 : 12/9/2018 9:27 pm : link
still have to find a legit QB talent and option going forward. Whether that’s in the draft the next two years or via trade or something.

Is it too much to ask to get a few first downs up 40-0?

The Lauletta excuses are absurd. There’s no reason why he couldn’t move the ball vs a D that had mailed it in until he gave them life.

was terrible, but it was one game. His lack of arm strength is more concerning than the fact that the game was obviously too fast for him. That is true for most rookie QBs.

As far as Webb is concerned, I agree it would have been good to see him in a few games last year, but that wasn't going to happen after the way Eli was benched. Remember also that nobody picked up Webb after he was cut. The Giants couldn't even trade him for a seventh round pick. He was signed to the Jets' PS.

THe Jets never played Webb either after Darnaud injury.

Yeah I never really understood the reason for that move. Tanney just never made sense. Webb, while always a long shot to become an NFL starter, always seemed like he had more everything than Lauletta. From everything I read he seemed like a good teammate, would have been much more interested to see what he could do than Lauletta. KL could end up being good, I just have never been impressed by anything he does. Today certainly wasn’t a great showing, which means nothing, but he really did zero to give anyone hope he could be the guy someday.
It's not 'how he played' that is the problem...
Torrag : 12/10/2018 5:51 am : link
....that could be predicted for 99% of 4th round draft picks coming in for mop up duty as their first go round as a pro. It was his pathetic level of arm talent that was shocking. Ducks is being kind. More like ducks after I hit them with my Remington. He has a wet noodle for an arm.
Lauletta

Was terrible and won’t be here next year believe me he’s got the worst arm I’ve ever seen .....I’ve seen HS players with better arms than him
He was drafted for show to shut all the people up over Taking Barkley over Darnold
He was unusually bad

Nothing like Simms or Manning who both showed special talent right form their first series.

yes the Jet's HC was on the hot seat because Jets were losing and HC felt his only way to win was to play their veteran backup

and ironically the offense was anemic with vet QB and many were calling for Webb to play

Caught that as well, and I can’t really blame Shurmur for (politely) sticking it to these reporters a little bit.

At least Lauletta didn’t look over hyped like Webb did in preseason. He just looked a bit unprepared and his lack of arm strength was noticeable. At 40-16, fans were actually getting nervous and calling for Eli to return before the Michael Thomas’ int in the endzone.
He looked like he didn't belong
AcesUp : 12/10/2018 10:59 am : link
Small sample size and his first live action, so perspective is needed but he was bad. It went beyond nerves too, it may be a tools issue. That said, once the team is mathematically eliminated, they need to put him out there with the ones in extended action. You need to see if there is anything there to work with and if he can be counted on in any capacity next season.
So why.....

Me too. His college game tape and Sr. Bowl seemed to show that this kid was pretty good. Don't forget, Dave Te had him as a 2nd rounder.

He needs a few more chances. Maybe pre-season.
