Shumur on Lauletta...ouch

"I fielded enough questions regarding Kyle Lauletta, that those of you that were interested in seeing him, hopefully you got a chance to see what you were looking for."

Wow, for a guy who seems so calm on the sidelines, Shurmur has shown some attitude in his post game press conferences. We all know that Lauletta did not look good today, no way to slice it. But at the end of the day, wasn't Lauletta drafted with Shurmur's input? Isn't part of Shurmur's job to develop Lauletta?

He essentially embarrassed his rookie QB to get at some press people who were pissing him off. Not sure that's what we really want to see. We've seen a few times from Shurmur that he will take shots at his players (talking about Rosas not needing to hydrate, which was a pretty clear shot at Odell after Odell called out the play calling in Philly).

I like some fire from the head coach. I grew up watching Parcells. But Parcells didn't become Parcells until he was winning. Shurmur isn't there yet in my opinion to use his post game to, seemingly, settle scores.

The line that Matt referenced was a throw away joke that Shurmur said at the end of his comments on Lauletta, with a smile on his face. Thanks yayqb. Unfortunately the pitchfork and ax gang have already made up their minds without reading or seeing the entire quote.

And how does anybody here know if Shurmur had input ......let me tell you Parcells didn’t have much input that’s why he said I need to shop for the groceries

And Like Sy said Eli won his 2019 job yesterday ...... I wouldn’t be surprised if Shurmur asks the Giants to draft his son next year ......

They took a QB just for show? Ok....
Laulletta is and was a project pick.
Britt in VA : 12/10/2018 7:39 am : link
The media and fans just wanting to throw him out there and see what he's got have unrealistic expectations.

And I'm a poster that advocated heavily for Lauletta. And what he did yesterday changes nothing more me, because I always knew he'd be the type of pick that needed to sit a year or two.

I think it's funny what Shurmur said because it's true. And it's like he said it directly to half of BBI.

You truly believe they wasted a draft pick on a quarterback they knew couldn’t play to say “hey we took a QB”?

You truly believe this?

I listened to the whole conference. And yes his comment was in a smiling nature to the press I presume to tell them to stop bothering him about seeing what Lauletta could do.

But knowing how KL looked in that game, it was a comment that was uncalled for because he used his player as an "i told you so" reply as opposed to saying something more like his development will continue or more generic/bland.

i didn't like it...

Is it possible that Shurmur has never been to enamored with this kid hence the treatment ?
Shurmur should be above the slapfest with the media

given how his comments reflect on the rookie.

At the same time, those who wanted to see KL in action got their wish. Predictably, there's a ton of work to do and most of it falls on the kid to get it done.

Yes its possible. And that would clearly make it fall in the "uncalled for" bucket for a HC...
If the regular season finale vs the Cowboys is meaningless...
Milton : 12/10/2018 8:22 am : link
...for both teams, I would expect the Giants to start Lauletta (or at the very least, give him a full half of work), especially if the Cowboys are resting Prescott and others. On the other hand, if the Cowboys are jockeying with other teams for playoff position, the Giants may feel the honorable thing is to start Eli. Either way, I don't think we've seen the last of Lauletta this year.
p.s.--Years from now we will be referring to him as Last Laugh Lauletta.

Agreed. Lauletta was poor, but making any conclusions off one game is ridiculous. I don't think Lauletta is Eli's long term successor, but let's see more before deciding he can't play in the NFL.

enough of your Eli bashing - the grass isn't any greener starting a rookie QB (any rookie QB). I thought the comment was a slight at the press more so than any player. IMO

He's a rookie fourth round pick. What exactly were your expectations for his first in game action?

Do you remember the first time Eli came in, in relief of Kurt Warner. Jerome McDougal.

I agree with this. Shurmur seems to care a little too much about what the media thinks. Hopefully, he learns to not get involved in these stupid squabbles and just coach the team. On the other hand, he also likes to challenge players, sometimes publicly. Maybe he feels KL needs to work harder.

thanks for pointing out the full context. To be fair, I went with the quote that I saw. That does make it feel much less "prickish" from Shurmur.

All of you that were calling to see him in that game that it was PREMATURE. There is a reason why he was drafted in the 4th round and it will take time for PS and Co. to work with the young man to get him acclimated with the NFL game and this offense.

Eli may not be as sharp as he used to be, but he is still one of the more intelligent players to play the position. Even he took time to learn this offense, and he was taking all of the snaps.

The fact that many wanted Lauletta out there, regardless if he was ready or not just to satisfy their need to see someone else in there, was always ridiculous. Lauletta should remain the #2 QB and come in if there are any other blowouts. That is it.

He should also not be a reason why the Giants don't draft a QB next year. I say all this to say that I am a Lauletta fan, and I think he should get a chance to play at some point. But not before the coaches think he is ready. They would only be doing him a disservice by playing him before that. Yesterday was a great game to get his feet wet, and he will get better from it.

BINGO!
Eli isn't going anywhere - and the Giants need a future QB
PatersonPlank : 12/10/2018 9:36 am : link
Its not anyone on the roster now. We need to draft a QB in the draft (if there are good ones after combine workouts), trade for one like Carr, or wait until the 202 draft (which would be pushing it and depend on our draft position).

Agreed, he needs a bit thicker skin and ability to shrug them off with some intelligence so they approach him differently in turn.

Given the leap from Richmond to the NFL and KL's recent run ins with the law, it's not a stretch to suggest he needs to screw his head on straight in more ways than one.

This is it in a nutshell. Same thing with Davis Webb last year.
You can tell by the look on Lauletta's
Simms11 : 12/10/2018 9:59 am : link
face that he was frustrated and unsure of things. Play moved way too fast for him. Regardless of arm strength, he just didn't look comfortable. Maybe next year he'll feel more comfortable and have a better idea of where to go with the ball.
Did anyone on this thread
Dave on the UWS : 12/10/2018 10:02 am : link
listen to ALL of Shurmur’ s comments about Lauletta? He praised him for his poise, getting the team lined up, calling the play, getting the protection right. He added he would have liked a few more competitions and he wasn’t happy about the interception. He then made the admittedly, sarcastic comment concerning Lauletta ( shouldn’t have said it). It was more directed at the media for the “grass is greener” attitude not meant as a criticism of his QB. He knows Lauletta has a very long way to go to be a functional QB.
