Where did this OL come from?

baadbill : 12/9/2018 11:59 pm
How do you cut starters mid-season... go through 4 centers... sign guys from nowhere ... and end up getting 5 guys who suddenly are playing like they are actually a half way decent OL? I’m not saying they don’t get beat. I’m not saying Manning won’t still get sacked and pressured more than he should. Or that they still fail to be road graders when it comes to blocking for the run.

But they get up off the turf after every play - good or bad - and go do it again. With everything they have. And you get the sense they have some pride. And each other’s backs.

Who is responsible for this assemblage? He deserves a real pat on the back, whomever he is.

Solder has improved during 2nd half
Hernandez is growing as a player
Brown was a gift. Solid no spectacular.
Wheeler gets better with reps but is a backup.

Bottom line is they got rid of a major team virus in Flowers. And the team started to gel as the Giants transitioned to a run first team
addition by subtraction: Flowers and Omameh

addition but pure luck: Jamon Brown. And I think Solder was dealing with an injury.

I think it’s very likely that Solder was/is playing through an injury

He was incredibly bad the first half of the year. Brown has been glue. If we can get a decent center and right tackle we’ve got a solid foundation for Barkley and our next QB.
The right side of the line

Is still a disaster area. Barkley’s big runs were to the left. And right side had protection break downs.
They now have 2 NFL

calibre guards with the addition of Brown. First time in a long time. Barkley has helped too.
Brown's first game action after being claimed on waivers

was night/day compared to Greco. Being able to switch on stunts was a miracle that we haven't seen in a half a decade on the right. I think the bar was set so low in our expectations that any upward tick in competency has been viewed through our blue-tinted glasses. I still like Brown and am tempering my expectations that he is only learning the offense for a few weeks and these few weeks have been his only game action since last year. He is a large man that is still likely getting into game shape. I hope he continues to improve as it would be nice to not have to find a replacement. But so far, he hasn't locked down the position for next year.

Wheeler has been getting better and gives great effort, but we need to find a RT. Wheeler being a swing tackle still provides plenty of value.

Spencer sucks. I can only assume that Evan Brown must suck more as he is unable to push Spencer to the bench. The staff liked Halapio. I just hope that doesn't stop them from looking for a competent C.

I know you should build the line from the inside out, but I would categorize our area of need as RT first, C second, and RG third. At a minimum, we need a RT assuming Halapio and Jamon are returning.
I'll put it this way

The first half of the year I felt they had to go OL 1st in the draft. Now I wouldn't be mad if they go with a pass rusher. I still wouldn't be mad at an OT either though. I just feel better than they don't have to force a pick as bad as they did before.
DG is still the same person.

He didn’t suddenly lose his ability to find that gem or 2. Patience.
Part of Solder

problem was trying to help out the guard.
If we come out of this offseason

With an improvement at Center and Right Tackle this offense will perform. I still feel like a pass rusher is our number one priority.
It's been good to see

competent OL play the last 3 or 4 games. I am still concerned with Wheeler at RT. He is regularly pushed back resulting in pressure on Eli. RT is a high need.
On a better offensive line with one weak player, Brown would have been

looked on as a stopgap.

Don’t think that he is the solution at RG and don’t think that DG will spend much money to keep him around. I doubt he will be offered even a Omameh level contract.

But maybe the Cards will cut Justin Pugh!

Agreed. Players got healthy and better. We need a center and a RT. My guess is that Brown gets a good offer, although we need to see him for the rest of the season before making any conclusions.
I'm tired of Solder

or whoever it is completely missing assignments on that side and letting guys come through completely unblocked
It’s not discussed often, but PS was an offensive lineman.

I think he understands what’s needed to be successful ... and sees who can / can’t get the job done. Plus both he and DG are not afraid to make decisions and move on them.
The GM deserves the credit

He decided that bad was not good enough. He brought in guys by the truck load. Gave a bunch of guys a shot. And kept cycling through guards and tackles until he has something that "sort of" worked.

The old guard just plugged guys in and hoped.
I hope you like Jamon too.
