Apple was under performing and Snacks (loved the guy but...) was expensive, getting up there and had some knee issues. Time to move on and hopefully get some productive players with the draft picks we got in the trades.
The fact that we got any more than a wad of used sports tape for Apple was a complete steal. The guy is complete garbage, and in any kind of competitive situation with the Saints has been targeted and abused endlessly by the other team.
We were getting gashed in the running game and Snacks would have helped in that regard. I am worried about facing Henry and Lewis because Tennessee actually has a good OL
they're playing better because they faced 2 backups Â
2) Was a little surprised by Snacks. I didn't mind trading him. I just think the return was bad at a 5th round pick
3) This notion that we ade getting gashed because of the Snacks deal is wrong We were getting gashed in the run game thiz year prior to the trade as well. He waz in the middle of a good, not greaf, season.
4) I agree with the nktion above that this was a case of dealing a guy ayear early rather than waiting a year too long. Wise move, especially with his cap njmber.
the Snacks trade was bad. I think we would be defending the run a ton better with Snacks in there. However, the Giants are showing improvement each game in defending the run without him. Maybe the other DTs just needed some game time.
Although Apple had a clean slate, he was on a short leash. Â
With questionable effort on a few plays, it was an easy decision to move on. Seeing Webb has been a pleasant surprise. He isn't going to earn any pro-bowls, but he doesn't quit either.
Snacks was a fan favorite, but there were too many issues that were becoming apparent. He has knee issues that aren't getting better. And despite the reputation of being a run stuffer, we were being run on with Snacks in the game. See the Saints game. I certainly would have liked a greater return on the trade, but I could see the reasoning behind it.
clearly reading is not your strong point since the purposes was to ignore what the comp was. Besides what we’re you expecting for Apple who was a borderline locker room cancer in’17 and average player on a good day? Snacks was solid but really a 2 down player, with knee issues.
Everyone is keenly aware of Apple's personality and his demonstrated lack of effort. But many are quick to forgive, Snacks vocal opposition to not wanting to be a leader. Not the impression you want to linger in the locker room with the young guys that may look to a veteran as a mentor.
Yeah it's a tough call. Fresh fruit is thought to be "healthy" but also contains a lot of sugar/carbs. Apples also have a good amount of fiber and pectin, which is a natural appetite suppressant.
Snacks was a player for a win now team. Getting rid of him and freeing cap space and getting a pick were the right move for the future of the team. He was getting old and his salary wasn't worth the results moving forward.
across an NFL season (and this year has been relatively kind to the NYG) depth wins late season games and playoffs that are gained by one game or less.
This team needs depth badly, especially on defense and at LB, DB and OL.
We can use the picks and we can trade up with the picks and we have a new scouting system (one thing we can say about DG is that his first rushed draft using much of the old scouting apparatus was a very good to outstanding and his wire pick ups (granted good position) have contributed.
I don't know the seriousness with which we almost traded Jenkins, but he has played well recently so clearly the value they assigned to him was the right calculation.
One good thing about newly drafted players...the FO and coaches do seem to have turned around the culture very quickly. Best way to keep on that road is to select your own and use FA as sparingly as possible.
the benefit more than the 5th rounder is shifting that cap room.
The other issue is he wasn't a leader. He played hard but he wasn't helping off the field.
Exactly. For better or worse, Francesa is still plugged into this team, and he has dropped on several occasions that Snacks was a "locker room lawyer." Not the type of guy we need around what is otherwise a pretty young group of defensive linemen.
That remains to be seen. The salary dump alone was probably worth it.
Glad apple was traded.
Yes. We saved their salaries for the rest of this year, and those savings can be rolled into next year's cap.

Anyway, I like what montanagiant said, it's fun to see the young guys take over. We have used a bit of our draft resources on them.
Apple was a no brainer dating back to last years mental meltdown.

I agree plus Snacks is very aggressive player so I was always worried those knees would give up with all that weight

Snacks - helluva player but 30 and knees - long term probably a good move. And, he might be happier in 4-3 defense
Hasn't B.W. Webb been filling in for Apple?
someone else who does not understand how NFL finances and contracts work.

Seems to have found his place in Chicago. Good for him.

Yeah, the Bears all around seem like a likable team. I'll be pulling for them if the Giants get eliminated.
