Just curious what the current (most realible) estimates are for our cap space heading into the off-season. Wondering how crazy Getts can get going after guys for both lines...
You can change the year for 2019. It is based on a projected increase in the cap. The winter owner's meetings will finalize it. But it will be pretty close. NY Giants 2019 Cap Preview - ( New Window )
Nevermind there seems to be a glitch today in the 2019 projection.
(over the cap), the Giants are slated to have around $32.6M in cap space without making any cap saving moves for 2019.
The other number to pay attention to is how many players they have under contract with the cap usage.
So they have a column that shows effective cap space which shows what the cap would look like (maximum) if they add the minimum additional players to get to 51 and league minimum contracts, so effective cap space is the more relevant #.
Also important to remember the cap is fluid and relative. Some years having $32M in cap space was cavernous, but today, for 2019, that puts the Giants as having the 19th most cap space in the league. 2019 Cap per OTC - ( New Window )
So effective cap space is cap space minus dead money?
So it's closer to 25 mill. Still enough to extend collins and go after one more big fish...
There will be plenty of money without having to make cap saving moves (restructures or outright releases). I wouldn't get your hopes up on being active in the first wave of FA. I suspect that DG will be looking to round out the depth on the team by targeting the 2nd tier of FA. I also expect DG to release OV so his contract will carry dead money. We cannot carry OV with a $15.5M salary for 2019 and 2020.

both cap space and effective cap space are net of the dead money.
What effective cap does that's different than the cap space column is it adds n veteran minimum contracts to get the teams up to 51 players under contract, since the top 51 contracts are what count toward the cap for the off-season,
For example if you have 45 players under contract and 25M in cap space the effective cap space column adds 6 players at vet min (750k for arguments sake), and then adjust your cap space down 4.5M to $20.5M because realistically that's the most you can have for free agency since you need 51 players on the off-season cap.
By releasing said players the Giants would save against the cap:
Olivier Vernon $11.5 million
Alec Ogletree $6.5 million
Janoris Jenkins $ 7.75 million
Rhett Ellison $3.25 million
Kareem Martin $3.18 million
Jonathan Stewart $2.85 million
Connor Barwin $1.5 million
Eli Manning $17 million
Now I think there is little chance that Eli and Jenkins are cut but the rest are in danger. Barwin and Stewart will definitely be let go.

I doubt Ogletree, Jenkins, Martin or Ellison are cut. Eli, I think stays, but he will have to take a pay cut. Not sure which way they go with OV. Stewart is a goner, and I think Barwin should be gone as well.

I don't think they part ways with Ogletree. Bettcher is a big fan and although coverage is clearly not a strong point he has made plenty of plays against the pass. Think Ellison sticks too. The rest are likely gone.

Eli, Ogletree and Jenkins are three players on that list that a month ago I thought for sure would be gone after the season. However, all three have played really well since the bye.
In comment 14213567 Eli, I think stays, but he will have to take a pay cut. Not sure which way they go with OV. Stewart is a goner, and I think Barwin should be gone as well. [/quote]Eli is not taking a pay cut nor will he be asked to. If the Giants want to create cap room for 2019, they will convert a portion of OBJ's $16.75M guaranteed salary into bonus money and have it amortized over the remaining five years of the deal (i.e., converting $15M into bonus would create $12M in additional 2019 cap room...just enough for Landon Collins's franchise tag).
Bottom line they have plenty of space to get a couple of good FA
And that's all anyone gets no matter how much money they have. There are too few FA and too many teams with cash. They won't even ask Eli to take a cut. You don't do that to your starting QB much less Eli especially when you have the kind of space the Giants do.
We have 37 players under contract with 32 mil in Cap space and 6 mil in possible carryover. There is very little savings cutting Martin let alone part of his contract is guaranteed. Cutting Stewart makes sense and talking to Vernon about a pay cut or release is where the money is. Extending Eli makes sense even if he only plays one more season and create dead money later which is affordable with a rookie QB to be named later coming in2 years and no Eli contract. Only 2 WR under contract unless you count Henderson Shepherd and Beckham are signed. Perkins Gallman and SB signed at RB are signed. Pulley and Jamon Brown are not signed along with Landon Collins. DG will be busy
