Thoughts on Next Gen QB Stat: Aggressiveness

BH28 : 12/10/2018 4:41 pm
I was looking through the QB Next Gen stat and saw AGG% and thought what is this metric? Apparently it is Aggressiveness and is defined as:

Aggressiveness tracks the amount of passing attempts a quarterback makes that are into tight coverage, where there is a defender within 1 yard or less of the receiver at the time of completion or incompletion. AGG is shown as a % of attempts into tight windows over all passing attempts.

Eli is fourth in the league in this behind Winston, Rosen, and Fitzpatrick. Last year he was 11th; 2016 19th.

Guys like Brady, Brees, and Rodgers are consistently in the lower half of this metric. One thing to note: Aggressiveness doesn't necessarily correlate to intereceptions; there are guys in the bottom half of the league in AGG% that have more INTs than Eli

I thought maybe there is a correlation to Time to Throw (TT) but Brees and Brady are ahead of Eli in getting rid of the ball. I feel like there is SOME correlation to TT as Eli is 9th quickest in getting rid of the ball yet still top 3 in sacks taken.

I don't think this is by offense design as Keenum last year was bottom third in TT and AGG%. Maybe the pitfalls of a new offense being installed? Worthless stat?

Could be a lot things

Could be poor decisions by the QB. Could just be the defense having everything covered.

They should show the completion percentage on aggressive throws but I don't think they do.
If you notice those QBs all play on teams

with bad records. I imagine when you are behind in games you have to force more throws, which would drive up the aggressiveness number.

All in all, seems like a pretty meaningless stat.
Yeah, as mentioned...

QB's not seeing the field well, trying to force things (because they're behind or they don't trust certain receivers), bad offensive schemes with little to no creativity getting receivers open, poor route running or bad receivers, playing from behind.

It's an interesting stat, but on its own it doesn't tell us much.

A good question for discussion though - what are the reasons why Eli has such a high aggressiveness %?
I'm sure a lot of it

is can you get a pass rush sending just 3 or 4 which let's face it you could against this team. If your opponent is dropping 7 time and time again then you're gonna have to hit some tight throws.
Poor scanning of the field
