The 2012 New York Giants

BestFeature : 12/11/2018 11:52 am
What was up with that team? Might be the most Jackyl and Hyde team since I started following in 2001.

The Giants scored 36 or more points 6 times that year. They beat some good teams like the Niners that year 26-3. They also beat the 11-5 Packers 38-10, although they had a lot of injuries that game. But they also got blown out on 3 separate occasions, including a 34-0 shellacking by the Falcons. They also had 6 games of fewer than 20 points. They would have won the division if not for a fluke win by the Redskins where the game-winning TD was scored when RGIII fumbled and the ball was recovered in the end zone.

It's arguable that they at least had a better regular season than the 2011 team. There's no way that team should have not made the playoffs.

That was a totally different team after Hurricane Sandy. And really a different franchise since then too.
That season

is conpletely defined by ‘Before Sandy’ and ‘After Sandy.’ I don’t remember much else about the season in terms of major injuries derailing everything, but they just fell apart after the hurricane, and it’s pretty much been shitty teams ever since then for almost 6 six years now.
Man, that Redskins loss STILL grinds my gears

The RG3 fumble that magically just dropped right into Alf Morris' hands still annoys me.

The 2012 team was definitely a strange one.

We looked bad against Dallas in the opener. Then, Eli threw for 510 yards in a 600+ yard offensive explosion against TB in the home opener. Dismantled Carolina in Week 3 on TNF.

That team had some super impressive wins - the game in SF that we won 26-3 and the 38-10 drubbing of GB in prime time in particular.

On the flip side, the team started to look equally incompetent down the stretch.

I remember the Bengals game being the first game where things started to seem like they were falling apart or that there were cracks in the foundation.

We scored 52 points on the Saints and then turned around and got shut out in ATL the very next week when we desperately needed to win.

We had one more shot against the Ravens the next week and got our asses kicked again at home.

Blew out a crappy Eagles team to close out the year but it didn't matter - we needed help from the Lions (and others, IIRC) that day and didn't get it so we missed the playoffs.

Very weird season and definitely a completely different feel post-Sandy.
losing nicks

for the season, and then permanently, after the TB game is what derailed that season IMO. but the OL was beyond repair at that point. it's a shame baas and shwartz didn't pan out.

as bad as reese got over his last 5 years as GM, he really did have some bad injury luck over his tenure w NYG
We should have won the division

completely blew that Redskins game and if I recall, there was a questionable holding penalty that derailed a potential GW drive. One point loss cost them the division

That was a solid team that deserved to be lumped in with the 2005-11 era that is often cited. But looking back, it was clearly the last gasp for that core.
The Redskins game was bad

But they still had a shot at that point.....until they rolled over and died with total no-show efforts against Atlanta and Baltimore.
Also Deihl was toast at this point
BigBlueDownTheShore : 12/11/2018 12:38 pm : link
I think Locklear filled in for him and did well while he was hurt, but as soon as he was healthy Deihl went back out there, and just sucked so bad. TC wouldn't remove him from the lineup.

Huge ammount of injuries
BillT : 12/11/2018 1:06 pm : link
That left little talent in the 2nd half of the season.

Yep.....Pittsburgh physically beat on us that game, and we really never recovered. Despite big point total home wins versus Green Bay and NO.

except they destroyed a very good Packers team after Sandy. One of the most inexplicable wins of the TC era IMO.

So many bad losses that year, including the usual close loss to the Eagles.

I was more impressed by the Niners win in SF. The Packers were very injured for that particular game. Also, SF made it to the SB that year.
I've written about 2012 before

and how the combination of the signs that the remaining core of the 2007 champs, who squeezed out one more title in 2011 was cooked after the blowouts by Atlanta and Baltimore. The Giants should have started their rebuild then, but decided to go for it when the Super Bowl was at MetLife in 2013 and the wheels came off and sent the franchise into a tailspin.

But if you think about it, the 2012 Giants ended up sinking the Redskins. RG III was the next coming of Randall Cunningham and was going to be a nightmare for the Giants. He hurts his knee against Baltimore and the Redskins should have shut him down and gotten him ready for 2013. But as the Giants faltered, Danny Boy saw an opening for the Redskins to actually be a playoff team and forced him back on to the field. So the Redskins were able to sneak ahead of the Giants, knock them out of the playoffs, and put RG III on the field at home to Seattle where his knee turned to soup. Follow that up with a marketing push for RG III coming back too soon in 2013 from injury and their whole franchise went bust, leading up to the year to year contracts with Cousins....only to find out that Cousins puts up amazing stats from Sept-Nov, but shits the bed in December when the games count.

Ugh

Horrible memories that year.

@ Philly.

@ Washington.

And to think 3 years later we would have another shot to go into Washington and take the NFC East from them and we blew that one too.

Some brutal things

@Phi - the usual stuff to snatch defeat from victory

They were 6-2 and 7-4 with destiny in their hands and came up small

Pitt - blowing a 10pt 4th qtr lead

Was - Brutal - had to look up stats - 4 1st half possessions - 260 yards and only 13 points - and lost Locklear

Shitshow in Atlanta followed by shitshow in Baltimore
