I know if you look at McCutchen's numbers, he looks decent on paper. But that is mostly because he draws a ton of walks, which boosts his OPS+ and other analytics.
But this is not the same guy who had 5 great years in Pittsburgh. Pirates traded him and then Giants let him walk after only a year.
Of course, guys can sometimes bounce back, but right now AM is a .250 hitter with moderate power and below average defense in CF. He does draw walks but the topnotch pitchers you face in the playoffs are not going to issue walks. Kershaw, Scherzer etc are not walking McCutchen.
than others seem to believe. I think he is worth that contract particularly with the intangibles he brings. I wanted him back with the Yankees but there was no way he fit into what they are doing.
he was the exact same type of signing last year. Solid hitter, 32 years old, overpaid to sign early (presumably bc there was competition for his services). Even if the deal is a little rich in AAV and 1 year too long, they just showed you can always deal that player for someone a little more expensive.
Money. He’s well on his way. Easy when millions to these guys is like 100 dollars to the regular guy. But at least he’s willing to do it and it’s his cash.

Or maybe Philly just made him this year's Carlos Santana.
Yea I like Mccutchen but that 3rd year is going to be a crapshoot.

Exactly. Who cares about the money. There’s no cap. Middleton is sitting on a big pile of Comcast money and wants it spent.
Talk about setting a market and eliminating Ponzi owners from competition out the gate
