Sam Beal's current role on the team.

Daniel in Kentucky : 12/12/2018 10:13 am
I know this is an old article but I found it interesting how the Giants are utilizing Sam Beal this year after a season ending injury. Apologies if it was posted earlier in the year.

"He is now being used as an advanced scout for the Giants defensive backs."

"Beal watches videos of the upcoming opponents to look for pros and cons in their games. Once he is finished reviewing the film, he then brings it to the table during the defensive backs meeting."

He was predicted to be a 1st round pick in the 2019 draft, so he should be a welcome addition to our defensive backfield on game day next year with already building camaraderie off the field not to mention days of film study.

I thought they couldn’t be in meetings

it's that team and player tend to want them to focus on their rehab first, second, and third. Given it was a shoulder and not a knee reconstruction, they're investing in coaching him up.
Interesting that they would lean on a college player

to scout opposing DBs.

Why would they do this? I would not think coaches would trust the observations of a player who has never played at this level. This seems like a job for a lower-level assistant coach or a quality control coach who's learning the ropes.
Sounds like a great way
Chris684 : 12/12/2018 10:25 am : link
to bring this kid along and give him the head start they have the luxury of since drafting him in the supplemental round.

It's become popular on BBI the last several months to say that they have no 3rd round pick, when in fact they do, and he's already in the building breaking down film.

I assume he's scouting other team's WR not DBs.
I doubt he's the only advanced scout in the role
JonC : 12/12/2018 10:27 am : link
he's probably working in parallel with a paid scout or coach.

I doubt they are leaning on him. I see it more as a move to keep him involved (and hopefully learning) during his down-year.
I'm certain his scouting

is why Webb and Haley are playing so well ;-)
I'd assume (hope)
giants#1 : 12/12/2018 10:48 am : link
he's working closely with an assistant coach and that this is a way to keep him involved with the team while he develops (mentally) and learns the game.

It's also possible that he's been doing this most the season and maybe after some early work side-by-side with a coach/scout, he's shown he can handle the task himself.
I'd be happy with Jenkins, Webb, Haley and Beal

I'm guessing this a also a way to help him learn while he's not able to play. I'm sure they don't take his word as gospel and probably want him to become as cerebral as possible if he can't be on the field.
The "predicted to be a 1st round pick" thing is overblown.

Designated to return? I forget the timeline for the surgery, in theory could be valuable for him to get in even one game going into next year. In theory he has to be in some type of shape considering how they are using him.

juggs, maybe, but other than JJ, they are on the smallish size, vulnerable to bigger, physical receivers

No, he was IR'd before final cutdowns, so he's not eligible to return.

The highest retention is teaching.
Once you teach something you are using the most of your intellect.

I used to tutor math in college and it helped me retain the information at a level I would most likely not be capable of otherwise.

because the injury to Beal was a big blow for what the Giants were hoping to build. Remember what was said when he was picked:

Quote:
"We feel like we're getting our third-round pick now," general manager Dave Gettleman said in a statement.

Regardless of if he was going to be a first rounder in 2019 or not, the Giants felt they essentially got their 3rd rounder next year and get him into the system right away, so they get a jump start. The shoulder injury really screwed that plan up. However, if Beal can take advantage of what he can do, and that's being around the team, the coaches, learning/teaching, etc, this red shirt season will have some dividends in the future because our expectation of Beal next year will not be that of a rookie. He will need to get the physical part down, but the mental part of understanding the preparation as a professional should put him in a spot that he should be doing much more than whoever their 3rd round pick would have been able to do in 2019.

half a million bucks.

As long as they're paying him, they ought to keep him busy, and hopefully, out of trouble until next season. Hell, I'd make him wash cars if it keeps him out of trouble.
Don't forget about Lippett & Hamilton
GeorgeAdams33 : 12/12/2018 3:25 pm : link
Lippett could be very good if he's really over his injury. So far so good. At 6'-3" he can be useful. Hamilton is a talented athlete with the size and speed to play press coverage. Haley & Webb are more slot types. Hamilton & Lippett are both over 6'-0" like Beal. Taller CBs with long arms are what we will try to collect. Jenkins' contract could mean we move on from him as well and if we do I would love to draft Greedy Williams out of LSU. He is a rare talent.
That would be one potentially awesome group

Greedy Williams, Sam Beal, Tony Lippett, Anthony Hamilton, B.W. Webb & Grant Haley

Greedy will be long gone by the time we pick. I don't see DG trading up to pick a DB.

Thats exactly right, its like a red shirt year. He will need it for what Bettcher does. Also in this current draft class high 2nd round could be considered a floor for "where he would have gone". Know its subjective and hypothetical, but it was a nice pick up.
Lippett is interesting
ChicagoMarty : 12/12/2018 5:28 pm : link
I wonder if he would get consideration at Safety from the coaching staff

You have to like his size. At one time he was a good cover cb.

I don't know much about his tackling aptitude.

Both Beal and Lippett will be heavily scrutinized in camp next season for sure.

What is the downside. He’s being paid and rather than doing a bit of rehab and leaving he’s more involved. I would assume they are adding his analysis. Not replacing his w a more qualified persons hopefully. Great way to keep a young player invovled and to see if he sees what he’s supposed to be seeing

And he will be competing Vs many of these players next year. Sounds like a good and different idea.

An opponent is about looking for tendencies and tells and techniques. If you played a year of HS ball you can help with that, they aren't asking him to split the fucking atom. It's a good idea and hardly a waste of time. Jesus some people get all twisted up no matter what these guys do.
