are widely considered the most influential band of their generation.
Is this really true? I've never held my music knowledge in high esteem, but it may be much worse than I thought.
Bryan Ferry and Brian Eno's influence on the musical landscape of the 70s and 80s definitely outsize the commercial success of Roxy Music. You can hear their influence across the entire musical spectrum of those decades, from glam to punk to new wave.
All three are HIGHLY influential bands. All three basically created genres by themselves.
Stevie Nicks is the most overrated solo artist ever. She got in by name. She has written some good songs, but come on. If you are going by songs, John Prine has written better. And HE is endorsed by Dylan!!
Def Lep.. I love and still listen to High N Dry, Pyromania. But I agree... bar is low.
do enough outside Fleetwood Mac to warrant induction?
She DID do enough.... coke. Her persona got her in. Her persona created by amazing Buckingham songs. Not taking away the songs she wrote... but let's be honest here. Landslide and Gold Dust Woman should not stamp your ticket to Cleveland.
Roxy music tracks, what would you guys recommend? I'm talking 2-3 songs, there's no chance of me committing an hour to an album or an entire greatest hits if I don't like the appetizer first...
Def Leppard 547,647
Stevie Nicks 427,844
Todd Rundgren 365,370
The Zombies, 329,052
The Cure, 264,443
Janet Jackson 218,581
Devo, 186,754
Roxy Music, 167,307
Rage Against The Machine 148,208
Radiohead 140,458
John Prine, 136,746
LL Cool J, 119,657
Rufus featuring Chaka Khan, 99,724
Kraftwerk, 87,456
MC5, 85,304
Of those bands, the only ones I really care about are Rage, MC5, Stevie, and Def Lepp. Maybe Radiohead.
Maiden should have been in a LONG time ago.
It's funny that the two lowest on the vote list two of the most influential in popular musical sub-genres. MC5 was arguably the first punk rock band and Kraftwerk were pioneers in electronic music.

That's tough. Very polarizing band. I LOVE the music on Avalon. My wife hates when I put it on.
Songs: Avalon and More than This on that album got play.

do enough outside Fleetwood Mac to warrant induction?
She DID do enough.... coke. Her persona got her in. Her persona created by amazing Buckingham songs. Not taking away the songs she wrote... but let's be honest here. Landslide and Gold Dust Woman should not stamp your ticket to Cleveland.
And Landslide and Gold Dust Woman are both Fleetwood Mac songs (that she sings, of course) but the band has already been inducted.

The right title for this institution. A better one is RnR museum. The Zombies had a few catchy tunes but who considers them a great band by any measure?
...her compilations with Tom Petty also had an impact.
I believe as an individual, her work with Fleetwood Mac is taken into consideration here, because of what she represented artistically, a truly unique talent - there's no one else like her, and in a big-dick-guitar heavy era that featured few female artists, she was a huge icon, in or out of Fleetwood Mac. A great singer/songwriter with unique and dramatic stage presence, she penned and recorded some really beautiful songs - 'Sara' will forever be a personal favorite - while she may not have a catalog packed with top-40 hits, her impact is significant, and worthy of induction, IMO.
stock in who is in and who isn't. When I went to the R&R Hall of Fame there was a special section for country music performers. WTF? Don't they have their own Hall of Fame?
Not saying they should be in, but they are the most underappreciated band on that list.
Listen to Kick Out The Jams. That's 1969. NOBODY sounded like that in 1969.
84k votes? Silly.
Absolutely. They were around a good 4-5 years before The Ramones, Sex Pistols, etc. CBGBs didn't even open until '73 and was a country music bar at first. A man named James Osterberg saw an MC5 concert and then decided to call himself Iggy Pop.
Doobie Brothers
The Smiths
The Pixies
Bad Company
Ronnie James Dio
Motley Crue
King Crimson
Faith No More
The Guess Who
Megadeth
Sammy Hagar
Pantera
Fucking Ozzy!!!
NIN
Soundgarden
Fucking Motorhead!!!
And have I mentioned ... Warren? Joe Walsh hates the Hall of Fame - ( New Window )
and Eno, either as individuals or as part of a group most definitely deserve induction.
They touched all parts of the music industry from performing to producing.
Jesus, FatMan, you just brought a tear to me eye.
I am a huge, lifelong U2 fan and Eno has been an great influence (and Lanois) on their music since The Unforgettable Fire. So I've grown very fond of him over the years.
As I'm sure you know he's been involved with Bowie, Coldplay, Talking Heads, Devo, etc over his illustrious career. Definitely someone who deserves HoF recognition.
I wish I could understand that. I cannot.
I wish I could understand that. I cannot.
Because it is a fucking joke that shouldn't be taken seriously.
I can't say I have ever heard of Roxy Music.
I'll be the first to tell you I'm not a huge music buff, but I'd like to think I should have heard of most hall of fame inductees.
Roxy Music = Harold Baines?
(I do really like The Cure, really glad to see that)
Flame away.
Not so sure about the others.
They were successful, but are widely considered the most influential band of their generation.
Is this really true? I've never held my music knowledge in high esteem, but it may be much worse than I thought.

I was about to post the same thing. She had a few nice pop hits but nothing all that great IMO.
Roxy
Devo

Not flaming but most definitely NOT = Harold Baines.
You should listen to some of their music including Bryan Ferry's solo stuff. May not be for you but you decide.
I actually thought they were in already.
They touched all parts of the music industry from performing to producing.

Dont forget Devo!!!!
Most US listeners probably weren't aware of Roxy's stuff in the early and mid-70's and only know of the MTV videos songs in the early 80's.

Devo were HUGE influencers in both new artists and OLD. Even Neil Young changed his sound due to their influence.
Not just new wave, but alt rock to this day. Wilco, for example.

Yep. Silly induction.

"Country Life" is a phenomenal early album.
Incredible.
Incredible.
He must have insulted that bitch, Jan Wenner.

thanks. will check 'em out.
The 80's stuff was more pop-ish or new wave, but Roxy started in the glam rock, art rock era.
And when Ferry was doing solo stuff, he did some really unique things, including releasing an album that was reworks of songs from the big band era.
Truly a musician in that sense.

I actually love his Dylan cover album. Very well done.

I would add Ferry's Boys and Girls solo album. Preview all the songs on Itunes if you have the time.

And is there a reason why Todd Rundgren received so many votes but didn't get in? Did he refuse or something?

...one of the most under-rated British Invasion rock groups.
They were one of the key progenitors of psychedelic rock and had three signature songs that were emblematic of the entire 1960s rock scene:
"She's Not There"
"Tell Her No"
"Time of the Season"
What took the R&R Hall of Fame so long?
Hear him!
Their Aqualung album is top notch with several breakthrough hits!
They belong!!!

Ronnie James Dio
