The New York Knicks and two-way guard Allonzo Trier have agreed to a two-year deal, per league sources on @TheAthleticNBA @WatchStadium. The Knicks are expected to release Ron Baker to create roster space, league sources said.
It's so haaaard to say goodbye to yesterday...

Baker
TyreeHelmet : 12/13/2018 10:00 am : link
Probably isn't good enough to play meaningful minutes on a good team and he got overpaid, but I will miss the guy. He played his ass off any time he saw the floor and was always the first guy off the bench to greet his teammates. I know those are cliches but they are true with him. I'd rather see Kornet go but they need the big man depth.

All the best to Baker.
the Knicks have given

out some of the most ridiculous contracts in the history of the league (Noah, Jerome James, Shandon Anderson, Eisley, Eddy Curry, and many others), but the Baker contract, despite being relatively tiny, may have been the most nonsensical. Just completely absurd on every level.

Allonzo Trier's two-year contract is for $7 million and has a team option for the second year, per ESPN sources. Ron Baker will be waived to make room for Trier.

The Knicks would have lost their bi-annual exception next year, anyway, since they plan on dropping below the cap. So its a good use of it now.

Trier will be a restricted free agent in 2020 with Early Bird rights.

Understand what your saying but give the Knicks situation all it cost them was cash and not cap. It was just an enormous parting gift from Phil Jackson.

It's amazing to say given how many shitty contracts they have given out, but Noah is by far the worst. Given the high cost and now length with the stretch and just how bad he was, it's not even close.
Glad to hear.

Robinson is signed for 4 years...

Hopefully they don't do something stupid early just to get it. You don't necessarily need 38 mil in cap space going into the conversation with him, they need the cap space when they need to make the signing official. I have no problem attaching an asset to trade Lee or Hardaway when you actually have a Durant/Kyrie/Kawhi in fold; then you know attaching a pick wont kill you. To attach draft picks without assurance you are getting a prime player though will always come back to haunt them.

it is actually closer to 8 or 9 million so you need to trade lee
OK - the logical move.
Del Shofner : 12/13/2018 10:21 am : link
Like someone said, Kornet is needed as a last big man off the bench. Baker wasn't needed at all. Not that I didn't like the guy - just ... WTF with that contract.
If Vonleh continues to play well
nygiants16 : 12/13/2018 10:21 am : link
may also be nice to have a little extra cap space to keep vonlehs cap hold and you can go over cap to resign him..

if they could have moved him they would have by now. He needs to rehab, get meaningful minutes and hope someone needs perimeter help at the deadline. And we need to not take back salary. That's a lot of asks.
If a Lee trade happens
bceagle05 : 12/13/2018 10:37 am : link
it means we're including a good young player/draft pick to get rid of him. As Steve mentioned, it's probably best to wait until Durant or Kawhi have a pen in their hands and a contract in front of them.
Solid.
JustaDiscussion : 12/13/2018 10:41 am : link
So far the Knicks haven't done anything questionable since Perry has arrived imo, except for stretching Noah too early. This is pretty much as expected, no fake injuries, no improbable trade scenarios lying in wait, just a straight up boring and logical transaction.
With moves like
LawrenceTaylor56 : 12/13/2018 10:44 am : link
this you can tell the Knicks are committed to tanking. #RIPRonBaker

Anakim : 12/13/2018 10:48 am : link
With a two-year, $7 million contract, Knicks guard Allonzo Trier is now basically getting paid the equivalent of what the No. 12 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft (Miles Bridges) will make over that time. Not bad for an undrafted rookie.

No bird rights on Vonleh. Maybe they can use the MLE once they go over the cap but I think once they renounce him they can't sign him. Could be wrong on that.

Hardaway is the guy they have to move. He can help a team but his role here just isn't needed. I think a trade with Detroit or Sac make a lot of sense.

If you also need to move Lee this offseason, then you can figure it out once its definitely needed ( trade dump, trade with pick, stretch).

obvious trade candidate because his contract isn't that outrageous and he's a nice 2 way player. Tim Hardaway Jr if they could figure out a way to trade him I feel like it'd be a minor miracle.

But hes also 33, currently injured, and really not that good of player. His defense is also overrated. He's not a bad defender, but he isn't exactly Tony Allen. He's probably not starting for a good team. I just don't see a team eager to pay a 34 year old Lee 13 million next year...

I could see a team talking themselves into Hardaway. The guy has his flaws which are magnified on this team, but he can score and he's only 26. I just don't think the Knicks will salary dump him yet.

I guess it's just a personal thing
Jan in DC : 12/13/2018 11:28 am : link
but I think Hardaway's value is in offense only. He is just a shooter. If another team values that and would take that contract, he should definitely be moved. Especially if it meant Durant. He and Porzingas can take the shots that Tim takes now. Not to mention Trier, Frank shooting more, etc.

Maybe I'm undervaluing him though.

Anyone else see the article about the Clippers plan to sign Durant and Leonard? They have room for 2 max FAs but I just don't see that. The clippers will always be 2nd fiddle to the Lakers.

I think its Knicks or Warriors for Durant. Is he really going to form another "superteam" with Leonard on the Clippers? Maybe I'm being optimistic...

I think the Clips are a legit threat...given their city and owner. Plus they have Jerry West advising them which doesn't hurt.
saying clippers have 2 max contracts is
nygiants16 : 12/13/2018 2:44 pm : link
a little bit of a stretch, yea they have that amount of cap space but that means they are letting harris walk...it would basically be durant and kawhi with gallinari
The problem with Hardaway is the trade kicker.
robbieballs2003 : 12/13/2018 4:18 pm : link
I know some people say his contract isn't terrible now but if he is traded there is language in his contract that increases his salary even higher. That is a tough pill to swallow for any potentially interested team.
Completely agree with waiting to trade
Oscar : 12/13/2018 4:31 pm : link
Hardaway or Lee. Dont really need to do it until the summer when you have a verbal commitment from Durant or Kawhi. Otherwise just keep them and move on. There is some slim chance that teams come knocking for either one this season and are willing to make a deal that is favorable for the Knicks but I doubt it.

Most likely scenario is that neither big free agent comes to the Knicks so there is no point in dumping pieces now to clear space.

My only real issue with Hardaway is he takes shots and playing time away from the young guys but as a lead player he kind of sucks which is good for the tank.

Reminds me of the story about ARod and Jeter when they were still friends. ARod stayed at Jeter's house in Tampa once, and was shocked that Jeter didn't have the Extra Innings package on his cable. Baseball consumed ARod's life, but to Jeter it was just a job.

I wonder if there was a trade option for the Knicks. Looking back would you have traded the 2018 and protected 2019 pick for Doncic? I doubt they wanted to drop to 9 or probably would have wanted no protection on 2019. I'd still be tempted- Doncic is incredible.

As in stands now Dallas only had to trade the 2019 18th overall pick for him. A great great trade...

We knew this was coming. Im sure made tons of calls and the only thing we could do was cut Baker. I bet no moves of consequence for the rest of the year.

Flash forward to this year's draft with the Knicks, where Perry and President Steve Mills added Knox, Robinson and, effectively, Trier, who is leading all Knicks rookies at 11.3 points per game but is now sidelined with a hamstring injury.

"I think they did a phenomenal job on the last draft," one NBA scout said of the Knicks. "They definitely have an eye for basketball talent.

"If you look at the work that Scott Perry did in Sacramento, if you put those two drafts together, he's probably next to Danny Ainge [of the Celtics]."

The scout added that if you had one NBA team comprised of Fox, Jackson, Mason, Giles, Knox, Robinson and Trier, it would be fairly loaded with young talent.

The NBA's last 2-minute report states that refs should have called a shooting foul on Matthew Dellavedova with 19 seconds to play & NYK down by 1 in CLE's win over the Knicks on Wednesday. A foul would have put Emmanuel Mudiay on the free-throw line with a chance to take the lead
