I don't know anything about this but have heard more than a few times over the years that Howard can be a cheap self-centered prick
and that we grew up across the street from each other. Believe it or not he was a great athlete especially baseball. He and I used to spend hours shooting hoops in his backyard and he never gave me a hard time because I sucked. He was just a great guy to be around.
I went a few months ago with my sister and brother in law to see his show at some hotel in NJ. He pretty much bombed except for a few spots. After the show my sister was like do you want to go up and say hi? I was like sure (I haven't seen Artie in like 35+ years). Artie was standing at the bar having a drink and people were starting to crowd him asking him for his autograph. He looked up and says OH MY FUCKING GOD and gives me a huge hug like a long lost brother. The three of us started talking about the old neighborhood, people who passed away, our families, etc. He took a picture with us and asked my sister to text it to him. She promised not to share the number and he said don't worry he got drunk one night and sent out on twitter so everyone has it.
After that every damn Stern fan started pushing in trying to snap a picture and get an autograph while we were chatting. He's still a very nice guy, but it made me extremely sad to see what terrible shape he's in and what pain he's gone through

it's a huge commitment. Most people violate and get sent to jail. You're talking intensive outpatient 3x/wk for 3 hrs a session, individual counseling, two meetings with the PO and a court appearance every week. And that's just the weekly appointments, that's not even getting into at least a dozen other stipulations. And that's for 18-24 months. It's essentially one last chance before an extended prison bid. And like I said, there's a significant failure rate.

Addiction is tough. But after 25 plus years, the people he's had trying to help him, the tremendous resources available to him, then yes, he doesn't want to be sober.
