Indeed Barkley has been a rookie standout. He's compiled very lofty numbers in another poor season for the Giants. To some, he's vaulted right to the top of the list as one of the best RBs in the league.
Meanwhile, Mayfield, who I didn't think was going to a great NFL QB, has really played some outstanding football for the Browns. They are 6-7-1 with some grueling, narrow losses to New Orleans, Tampa, and Oakland.
I must say, I believe a lot of that success had been Mayfield's play. With him as their regular starter, the Browns are actually 6-6. So he's steadied that ship. With two weeks to go, the Browns are still in the race for a playoff birth.
Mayfield is playing a more critical position in the game that directly impacting wins. While Barkley is a RB where his carries out dictated by the coach, and his receiving attempts are dictated by the decision of the QB.
So has Mayfield's play at the more important position elevated him to a real contender for the award? Or has Barkley's huge rookie season by total yards/scoring/etc enough to stave off Mayfield?
Does that include this weekend's results?
Yes, a lot of things need to fall into place. Stranger things have happened in the NFL. But the mere fact that the Browns are still hanging around, and Mayfield didn't play the first two weeks when the Browns tied and lost, is really a more interesting way to look at it...
Sort of like the Heisman. I agree. I think Barkley has more work to do to lock down the award.
Obviously would love 26 to get it. But it depends what happens, IMO. Mayfield comes out and wins the next two? Regardless of them making the playoffs or not, would be tough for 26 to beat that surge.
What is a signature game? 188 yards; 2TDs and a pick
He's a lock, it's not even close AT ALL. Yes, Browns fans should be excited about the future. Yes, Mayfield has been playing good ball recently. But he hasn't come close to what Barkley has accomplished all season long. Mayfield is a somewhat distant 2nd to one of the great rookie seasons in recent memory by Saquon Barkley.
Not close for me.

That's pretty funny. They need a lot of help including the Giants beating the colts in Indianapolis and Washington beating the titans in Tennessee. And if that was not enough, they also need the colts and titans to play a tie against each other in week 17. I wonder what kind of odds you could get for those things to happen. LOL

Weren’t you just mocking Giants fans for being excited about their remote playoff chances earlier today in another thread?
I’m sure you’d love nothing more than Barkley to not win the award.
Sure they do. Just because all you want is a title doesn’t mean the rest is meaningless.
It means Giants drafted the right guy, but otherwise meaningless.

No it doesn’t. That question will be answered in a few years. If we’re still in QB hell and a losing/mediocre team, and one of the QBs we passed on winds up being a top tier QB, drafting Barkley will have been a mistake.
That said, Barkley winning it is a lock. And I hope he wins it. Kid deserves it and plays the game right.

You are spot on...mr jints central would like nothing more than to see Mayfield win the award...another "true fan" who has been rooting against the team all year because they didn't draft a QB...

I did.
Here’s the difference. We’re talking about the hapless Cleveland Browns. So the mere fact that they are somewhat relevant in week 16 is why I bring it up.

but Mayfield had a signature game and Barkley was invisible. Don't think it's settled in either direction.

That's what I was thinking. Even it was a game ending drive included.....hardly signature game.
