NFT: Soccer: Mourinho OUT at Manchester United

Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 12/18/2018 8:00 am
Glazers give him the sack today. Certainly wasn't expecting it so soon - just was listening to the Totally Football Show from yesterday and most thought he would last the year. I did think he was doing his darndest to be out by Christmas and lo and behold, it happens.

You knew..

it was coming, but I would've bet my ass it wouldn't have happened until the end of the season.
So happy the club
gmen9892 : 12/18/2018 9:09 am : link
and Mou decided to part ways earlier than the end of the season. The season was lost anyways. Would like to see this team performed with the shackles of Mou's system removed. There is talent on the Reds. Gives them a ton of time to look for their next manager. They need to finally pick the right one.
Not

that surprised at the timing. I also thought he would last until the end of the season, but this is MU, one of the most storied and iconic franchises in soccer and sports. They don't mess around.

My guess is he's coaching somewhere next season.
United is in total disarray
Heisenberg : 12/18/2018 9:21 am : link
LFC dominated them Sunday.

You can't argue with Mourinho's resume, but wow, it did not work out in Manchester.
Hard to see where he will go

Maybe back to Italy. Hoping United get it wrong again here, I think there is a decent chance of that happening.
I think
Jon in NYC : 12/18/2018 10:02 am : link
he needs to take a step back into a less high profile club. Maybe a good but not great Italian team (either Milan team for example).
Everyone saw this coming
Kyle in NY : 12/18/2018 10:31 am : link
Before the season even started. Where he was once an innovative mind, the game has completely passed him by and he refuses to adapt, all while continuing to simply be a jerk. At some point, when you can set your watch to the guy making everyone miserable by year 3, you have so stop and wonder whether it's worth it anymore

Inter will take him back. Spalletti can't win a big game to save his life.
Who's the favorite to replace him at United
wigs in nyc : 12/18/2018 10:42 am : link
as the interim? Who's on the shortlist for a long-term solution? Does history repeat itself with Conte?

Yup. He also needs to get away from his white whale, Guardiola.
Conte is a great manager
Kyle in NY : 12/18/2018 11:10 am : link
but he burns bright and tends to wear out his welcome quickly. Plus his tactics share some similarities with Mourinho and my guess is United would like to move away from that while finally gaining some stability.

I bet they'd love to pry away Pochettino from Spurs

Big time. I'd say "Mourinho ball" peaked at Camp Nou in 2010 when his Inter squad knocked Barca out in the CL Semis. Since then, despite some success, it just hasn't quite been the same for him. And he grew more and more stubborn. All the while Pep's legend has grown.
Mourinho..
FatMan in Charlotte : 12/18/2018 11:16 am : link
has fallen into a trap that several high-profile managers have fallen into - they believe they are the reason for team success and that megalomania ends up being their downfall.

Great managers adapt their system over time, understanding that learning is fluid in sports. Those that don't adapt and maintain a rigidity end up flaming out after a couple of years.

I'd agree - that particular match was one of the most fascinating and important of the last 20 years.

He's just never gotten over Barcelona picking Guardiola over him to succeed Rijkaard. Part of the result has been that he has really dug his heels in on how his teams play...anti-Guardiola football.
I think they could get Pochettino
moespree : 12/18/2018 11:39 am : link
If they promised him significant say. Right now they have an executive at Man United with a lot of say and not many think he's all that knowledgeable or good. I don't see why Poch would leave a decent to good situation if he has to go through someone else to build the type of team he wants. If they promise him say I think he'll go as it does seem likely he's taken Spurs as far as any manager (in their financial situation) could.
They should pay Zizou a

Kings ransom to come to Manchester.
As for Mourinho
moespree : 12/18/2018 11:43 am : link
He needs to take time off and travel around and meet and talk with other coaches around the world. Klopp did this and Pep did this. They used the time they had in-between jobs to refine their skills and learn about different methods being used around the world. They altered their entire philosophy after doing this. Mourinho is in desperate need of something like this. His style is stale, dated and no longer effective. He needs to meet with fresh minds and come back with something different.
What a saga it's been since Ferguson left...
bw in dc : 12/18/2018 11:55 am : link
Moyes, van Gaal, and now Mourinho.

Moyes was in the most unenviable position of following a legend.

van Gaal actually started to find some direction but it just wasn't quick enough for United fans.

And now Mourinho. Whose ancient style just doesn't fit with Manchester. Plus, he's such a prick with his mind games towards players. He's essentially taken a wrecking ball to Pogba mind.

This is a very difficult job right now. There are a lot of holes with this team. Woodward does not inspire any confidence with his transfer moves and what is in the pipeline. Poch is apparently the target, but I would take a look at Conte. Not sure what the hell went wrong in Chelsea but he did some great work in year one there...think his passion and personality with be an interesting fit...

It would surprise me if he'd take that job. I agree he'd be a great hire (Pogba would love it), but Zidane strikes me as more of a Serie A or French national team manager.

Him parading around the field after the final whistle remains an iconic image of the modern champions league for me. He was endlessly fascinating and everything he'd accomplished up to that moment could not be argued with. I think Real Madrid broke him in some ways. And Chelsea is still recovering from the personnel decisions he made during his second stint, despite winning another title.
Pochettino has to be the lead candidate
Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 12/18/2018 2:48 pm : link
I can see them asking Giggs to do them a solid and caretake the team until Levy can get his pound of flesh.

Woodward has to go - they made some BAD buys - and they need someone who can complement the next manager's vision not just sign sponsorship deals.
Looks like it is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as caretaker.
Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 12/18/2018 7:35 pm : link
More relevant is Mike Phelan, long-time Fergie assistant, will serve as #2 with Carrick remaining on staff. Ole also worked with Pogba in the youth days.
