NFT: Tooth dilemma- Implant or Bridge

GMAN4LIFE : 12/18/2018 10:49 am
Ok so here is the dilemma I am running into. Its time to fill the whole where tooth number 3 was removed. I have the choice between getting an implant or getting a bridge. Right now I am in a basic tug of war between my periodontist and my dentist.

Dentist- He suggests since tooth number 2 and 4 are crowns, just get a bridge. He suggests that the sinus lift is too much work for two teeth surrounding the missing tooth that have crowns. Normally I would think he would want to do it since he will get paid but startled that he doesn’t suggest it.

Periodontist- He advices not to get the bridge as the other two teeth are still healthy and can run the risk of getting a cavity which then affects all the other teeth. In the end you will be paying more. But getting the implant means I need bone graft and sinus lift.

I am leaning more toward the implant as its just one tooth just weary on the sinus lift since I do suffer from sinusitis.

Yes I know the doctors know more than you guys but just looking for some opinions or insight.
Do you want to constantly

deal with a bridge shifting around or get the implant and forget about it for 15 to 20 years?
i got two implants in the past two years

due for another one soon. (injury from a long time ago)

once they are in you'll never think about them again. Long and expensive process but i have no regrets.
You're looking at a year

before a perm tooth is on there

6 months wait after the bone graft to put the implant in, then 6 months after the implant to hang a tooth on it.

with the bridge you're looking at a couple of weeks
I replaced a partial bridge with an implant that included a bone

graft. No regrets at all. The bridge was supported by two healthy teeth on each side although one did have a crown. The bridge was always needing work including re-cementing the crown and when in place I was never comfortable chewing with it due to the seemingly quick loosening.
If you're worried about the cost of a bridge...

Have him put in a toll booth as well.
i guess my biggest worry is the sinus lift

I have the same dilemma and I’ve been postponing it. The scary part is the sinus lift. There is no guarantee it will even work. Why not get an impartial 2nd opinion from an independent, qualified dentist?
I have one of each....

and they both work well. Granted, I didn't need a sinus lift or bone graft or any exotic work.
I've had no problems with the bridge loosening or having to get recemented or anything like that.
Both procedures were done over a decade ago.
I really can't recommend one over the other.
I had a sinus lift a year ago

Finally got the implant below it in June. Long (1 year in total), arduous and expensive process but worth it in the end. Implant is awesome once it's in.

Not really. Biggest challenge is you can't blow your nose for a week or two (!) or it could blast the bone (really, a fine powder) away.
I've had a bridge for

over 44 years and it only came loose once, that about 20 years ago. Easily glued back in place and no issues since.
i guess for me the only thing i am worried about is the sinus lift
