He also ran for a first down on a fake punt on a well timed decision by the coaching staff. TEN had no idea it was coming.

It was not a called play, but an improvised one. He had trouble handling the ball and decided to run when he saw there was no block attempt - all defenders had their backs to him.
I haven't rewatched the game yet...
Dan in the Springs : 12/18/2018 2:39 pm : link
will do that later tonight, but was wondering if you saw a difference in SB's approach to running the ball. Watching it live I had an impression that he was doing a little too much tip-toeing toward the line again, like earlier in the year. Didn't seem as aggressive going for the dirty yards.

Did you see any of that Sy?
Sy do you think that

Michael Thomas can be the 2019 starter at SS? Maybe he is not Collins when it comes to run defense, but he appears to be much better against the pass which is the other 1/2 of a safety's job.
Collins is a maniac that sacrifices his body and maybe that is why he gets injured. He hustles for the entire game. But not sure I see $10-$12 mill per season there. With all the needs, I am not sure they can afford to pay him, but I' also not sure they should let him go.
Manning staring down his receivers

I saw that too. Happy feet.
Thanks again Sy for your insightful reviews

Was high on Goodson last season hopefully he stays healthy
and improves . Our CB ar not very good in run suppport
Up in the air with Collins but I think we keep him and
move on from Vernon . It will be interesting to see who
we pick at #1 O-line D-line or maybe QB
I wouldn't mind the first 3 picks going to those two sides
we don't have a 3rd round pick that sucks ..
Hmm, only two drops for Shepard?
Tittle 9 20 64 : 12/18/2018 3:36 pm : link
Some on the game thread had him down for four. I agree with Sy here, some of those throws to Shepard were questionable.
Eli

can play like absolute dogshit and this coach won't put Lauletta in.

TEN was caving in the offensive line. There was nowhere to run to.
Making too Much of "Happy Feet"
Bruner4329 : 12/18/2018 3:45 pm : link
If you read Sys analysis it came down to one common theme. He used the below to talk about the defense but it really pertains to both sides of the ball. Giants are not physical team. They need to get tougher players. We were pushed around all game. Barkley had no where to run, Eli was pressured.

One thing I disagree with he went too light on receivers there was at least 6 dropped balls I remember including 2 by Shepherd. One hit him right in the middle of his chest on 3rd down and he dropped it.I like him but there are too many big drops to my suiting. This year I remember at least 2 in the Philly game down there that IMO cost us big time.

"NYG’s effort and passion certainly could have been better, but at the end of the day these guys were just getting beat at the point of attack over and over"
Why is it everyone keeps
Dave on the UWS : 12/18/2018 5:12 pm : link
forgetting we used our 3rd rd pick for Beal, a CB which last time I checked was also a position of need. It’s not like we got him for free!
Sy's comments on Eli are right on
PhilSimms15 : 12/18/2018 5:55 pm : link
"Manning’s biggest deficiency is he simply just can’t create anything on his own. He can make the throws when the time is there, but his mobility is worsening weekly it seems. And at the end of the day, this league is all about adjusting and creativity. With Manning, there is a deficit in both."

Eli can still be effective when he has perfect protection but as soon as there is even a minor breakdown, the play is over. In today's league, a QB HAS to be able to extend a play and Manning simply can no longer do that.

If they do bring Eli back as QB next year, I'd guess the Giants would win somewhere between 4-7 games.

How would you suggest him do so when Kyle was inactive?
The thing about drops as it relates to fans
Ten Ton Hammer : 12/18/2018 6:45 pm : link
is that objectivity is hard to find. You remember drops that had a major impact in a game and fill in the blanks as if the player is having a bad year.

Sterling Shepard is catching 61.5% of his targets. Larry Fitzgerald is catch 62.7% of his targets.

Is someone other than Shurmur setting the inactives these days?

But to Ryan's point- How is it Pat's fault to react to Eli's performance by not putting a player in that isn't active? Is Pat supposed to know before the game that Eli would play like "dogshit"? Or perhaps, Ryan should be clamoring for Trickshot Tanney to entertain us? Alex can toss the Duke to ricochet off the uprights back into the field of play only for Shep to drop it?

I totally agree with your summary assessment of Eli. I have been saying same for awhile now - no athletic ability to make anything happen unless everything around him is perfect.

BUT... how do you say he made an "uncharacteristic" dumb/aggressive throw that resulted in an INT an an inopportune time? I mean, doesn't that define his entire career? I would argue that is the one thing we can rely on with Eli is the head scratching, dumb ass throw that makes him look like a small college rookie.
I agree, with Sy,
Doomster : 12/18/2018 10:07 pm : link
the next two weeks will determine who stays and who doesn't...

Let's see how this team reacts to being "eliminated".....

Sy mentioned Jenkins and OV, two of the best players on this defense.....Yet, they could be huge question marks in the off season.....OV just has not performed up to his contract....And Jenkins, he started making business decisions more than a few weeks ago....he seems like the kind of guy, that puts out when the going is good, but feels like he doesn't have to when a game goes south......not what you would call a great character guy for others to look up to....

Problem is, you cut them and you create two more holes on a defense that already looks like swiss cheese...

So what do you do next year? You can't fix both offense and defense......I would go all in on the offense.....concentrate on the OL(C, RG, and RT) and a 3rd WR.....make this offense capable of scoring points to offset a depleted defense.....but let's face facts...even with the right guys in the OL, it won't be ready for week one.....it may take half a season before it plays enough together to finally gel.....But I would hate to see Barkley wasted next year without an OL.....who knows, with a solid OL, and more effective running game, maybe Eli can become a better game manager instead of having all the pressure on his shoulders....the flip side is, Eli is another year older, and if that OL does not function in front of him to give him time, he could be worse than this year....

Of course, we also don't know what our final draft position will be.....and if DG would trade up if a QB he wanted was on the board....

But this team will not be a playoff team next year.....all we can hope for is to add a few more building blocks, and hope that guys like Carter and Hill improve dramatically....hope that Beal's shoulder issues are past tense, and he lives up to his billing.....

WE have to be very lucky in the draft and FAcy....

To Sy'56's comments on Eli: You hit the nail on the head.

To PhilSimms15's comments on Eli: You hit the nail on the head.

There's nothing else to say about Eli at this stage in his career, save to wish him all the best in his post-NFL career, whatever that may be.

Agreed with quotes and your take. I have been saying the same for weeks. Now add that Eli is not going to get better, he will get worse. There is no upside to Eli. At least we can lose next year with someone with the potential to get better. We could also uncover a diamond in the rough. Eli has already been formed.

Don't forget the $17M savings by retiring Eli by March.

in 2016 the lost by 14 to the Vikings, in 2015 they 32 to the Vikings ...But yeah we have had bad losses at home for the most part since the Coughlin era
Thanks Sy

I think that the Colts are going to win comfortably this week. I hope Lauletta gets the start in week 17. They aren't playing for anything so they should give Lauletta the start to see if he shows any promise. They will surely lose but at least it will help their draft position with the added benefit of taking a look at Lauletta in real game action. I would also like to see Evan Brown get the start at center in place of Pulley. Pulley has really struggled this year and Brown has some potential.

I would also like to see Chandler start this week over Curtis Riley. As Sy mentioned Chandler has flashed and Riley clearly is not the answer and shouldn't be re-signed IMO. Is Chandler a potential option at FS next season? He deserves to return and challenge for a roster spot.

Grant Haley has been a pleasant surprise this year. He should be the nickelback next season.

I had the same exact reaction.

Eli’s trademark - on the negative - is making these bizarre, inexplicable, asinine plays that reek of a rookie. There have been so many that I think they start to offset this narrative that Eli is some cerebral, reliable player. He’s really not. It’s a huge reason why he has this very mixed legacy...
