Eli Apple

GoBlue6599 : 12/19/2018 12:07 pm
I know Cam Newton is injured and cant throw accurately right now but I thought El Apple looked pretty good the other night. I didnt like the pick at the time because I had my mind on others and I never really thought we were considering him.
With all that said the Giants gave up on this kid pretty quick when you consider the guy was a top 10 pick and they got whats going to be a late 4th for him after what was essentially 2 seasons of work
Well dont look now but New Orleans is playing some of the best D in the league the last 5 or 6 weeks and Apple is a starter for them as they head to the playoffs
It remains to be seen who got the better of that trade
Bottom Line
djstat : 12/19/2018 12:10 pm : link
He was not performing here. Sometimes a change of scenery helps. Not sure what the true chemistry of the defense was prior to the trades as well.
Yup...he's doing great
I Love Clams Casino : 12/19/2018 12:12 pm : link
but I still wouldn't want him here.

He's a bad fit here.

He wasnt performing but only 2 seasons of work to go on for a guy we picked in the top 10
I had a feeling after one pick after a bad throw by Cam

People would be praising Apple. Has anyone really not seen him since he got there? He is routinely beat and out of position against opposing #2/3 receivers.
no
mdthedream : 12/19/2018 12:13 pm : link
I watched him play for New Orleans in other games and he got toasted a lot.
Apple has been terrible
dep026 : 12/19/2018 12:13 pm : link
for NO as well. My friend asked me did he get penalized as much as he did with the Giants. I said sometimes, when he wasnt getting beat.

we are as good if not better without him in the secondary.
Apple..

currently is the lowest CB in terms of QBR against and has committed the most penalties.

But he played well in one Primetime game. There's football each week, Fella.

Against a QB who historically has been one of the least accurate of his era.
I was really surprised they brought him back this year...
sb from NYT Forum : 12/19/2018 12:17 pm : link
...I guess there was no real market for him. I'm glad he's gone. Addition by subtraction and the draft pick is just gravy.
It
AcidTest : 12/19/2018 12:26 pm : link
was a good trade for the Giants.
Well one thing is for sure
GoBlue6599 : 12/19/2018 12:28 pm : link
When you trade top 10 picks 2 seasons into there tenure and you get back a 4th from a playoff team its not hard to see why you only win 5 games
Huh??
FatMan in Charlotte : 12/19/2018 12:30 pm : link
What kind of fucked up reasoning is that?

Would we have won more than 5 games keeping Apple and Snacks?

Basically the new regime is weeding out the shitty decisions from the previous one.

Does this really need to be spelled out for you, because I have an uneasy feeling that it really does.
Maybe someone
Doomster : 12/19/2018 12:30 pm : link
actually taught him to turn around and look for the ball!

AcesUp : 12/19/2018 12:32 pm : link
He's committing a holding or pass interference penalty. He's exactly who he was here, a guy that will occasionally flash who is more often making a critical error. Also, our secondary play has improved since the trade - Webb/Haley > Apple/Webb. Even if we didn't receive any compensation, dealing him has opened to the door for another young player. Slot corner is one less thing this team will have to worry about next year.
You're making assumptions the player was doing alright with NYG
JonC : 12/19/2018 12:33 pm : link
He wasn't, and his attitude, personality, and performance all got him traded for pennies on the dollar.

That's on Apple.
Gettleman
Matt in SGS : 12/19/2018 12:38 pm : link
deserves a medal for getting anything for Apple. He was quickly going to go the way of Flowers. Apple was able to re-establish enough trade value to get him out before is inevitable injury or locker room flare up.

We've mentioned it before, but when we laughed at the scout's take that "he can't cook for himself" and we joked he can afford a chef, the real story was he was immature. That his mother decided she wanted to be a celebrity also didn't help. He had tons of family issues last year, between a public divorce with his mother and her health, but the reality is that he isn't showing any signs of growing up soon. New Orleans was the perfect spot for him because that offense will bail out the bad defense more often than not, and he's playing with a bunch of his old Ohio State teammates, which seems to be where he wants to be as he still acts like a college kid.

Apple was not going to work out in NY, he had to go, and at least Gettleman was able to get picks to help in this rebuild.
Most targeted defensive player in the NFL for 2018...

Youre going by the assumption the Giants are making the right choices in this matter .. I just stated the facts we traded a guy who 2 seasons prior we picked in the top 10
I never once said the Giants wouldve won more games with Snacks and Apple so I dont where youre coming from with that
Also your tough guy Im smarter than you act is laughable

I think what he means is, whiffing on high first rounders is a good indicator of a bad team. Not because we got rid of the great Eli fucking Apple for a mid round pick. Because under JR we drafted poorly for years.
A completely..
FatMan in Charlotte : 12/19/2018 12:46 pm : link
different regime traded those guys.

Apple in particular was almost let go the year before mid-season!

I'm sorry that there's a "tough-guy I'm smarter than you act here". Just seems a lot better than a "I have fucking shit for brains" act

I think you extrapolated something from his post that he didn't say or even imply. The point of his post was that a team drafting players in the top ten that get traded for pennies on the dollar 2 years later is at least partially to blame for where the Giants are at right now. It's a fair comment. He's not saying the trades weren't justified, and he's not saying the Giants would be better off if the trades didn't happen. Maybe grab a cup of coffee and lay off the guy.
It's a fair comment
JonC : 12/19/2018 12:59 pm : link
as is the perspective that there's been a regime change, and the new leadership is cutting its losses.

It's unfortunate the prior regime wasted a pair of top 10 picks, but blame and the bottom line belong to the players who failed to deliver.

Ok have the last laugh. Im not here to go back and forth with you or trade insults I just want to talk Giants football ✌🏼✌🏼🍻
You would think teams
mrvax : 12/19/2018 1:15 pm : link
before selecting a high pick would do a good job vetting these guys for personality as well as skill. Really a damn shame. 2 worthless top 10 picks.

Yeah that hurts 2 players picked top 10 and nothing to show for it
He sucks

Glad he's off the team. BW Webb is better and he's just ok.

In his first game with NO. I wish Eli the best. I hope he has lots of success. But I give DG credit for shutting down the experiment and getting a pick back.
Haters are going to hate but
Giants_Rock : 12/19/2018 3:20 pm : link
To be fair, this year Apple has half as many penalties as the league leaders. And for only 36 yards. http://www.nflpenalties.com/position/defensive-back/cornerback?year=2018
So maybe he turned the corner a la Corey Webster?
SHO'NUFF : 12/19/2018 7:30 pm : link
"Per snap-by-snap charting from Pro Football Focus, Apple played his best football for New Orleans. Apple dropped into coverage 46 times, drawing nine targets but allowing just one catch, for 21 yards. He broke up two of the passes and the rest fell incomplete thanks to his tight coverage, though he was penalized once early in the first quarter for defensive pass interference. Apple also logged two solo tackles and an assist."
Time will tell
Les in TO : 12/19/2018 7:55 pm : link
Payton obviously seems something he likes otherwise he would not be starting him.
Apple needed a change of scenery...
bw in dc : 12/19/2018 8:04 pm : link
Just too much went on off the field and that, I believe, impacted his play on it.

So it was good for both parties that he left. I hope he does well in NO and redeems himself. He's around a lot of Buckeyes which may help ground him more...

I've seen him a few times and it's been more of the same - some very good, some very poor...
