With Eric "Sleeping with Bieniemy" interviewing for the Jets head coaching job, it reminded me of the days when Berman was attaching fun names to athletes during his highlights segment. I think my favorite was Vince "Workman My Way Back to You, Babe".
What were some of your favorites?
My fav was from way back, baseball related: Jose "Take Me On Sea" Cruz...........
He also did a routine with the KC QB, Steve Bono, during highlights of their game and in between his commentary would hum along some tune (as if it were Sonny Bono)........hilarious!!!!
WHOOP!
Barry "U.S." Bonds
Sammy "Say it ain't" Sosa
I liked Bernard innocent until proven Gikley.
also an obscure former Uconn hoops player Lyman I'n not a rabbi I'm depriest was creative (lyman depriest)

He-e-e-e-e-e-e-y (he-e-e-e-e-e-e-y)
Andre Bad Moon Rison

...which was a play on “Dan Ingram” on CBS Radio in NYC.
Charles Get Out Of My Way
Tyrone Cream Of Wheatley
Do you guys remember Natrone Means? Had a big year in 1994. Last played in 2000, damn, I'm getting old.
I liked Berman and his name schtick but this one used to make me cringe because I thought he was playing on the Howard Cosell flub, “look at that little monkey run”. Wonder if anyone ever asked him about it because it’s kind of an odd thing to say.
-Michael HEHE Jackson (Browns WR) with Berman doing the name and TJ doing HEHE as THE Michael Jackson
-Chris "Cab" Calloway and the hi-dee-hi-dee-hi thing
-Well Dressed Amani Toomer
-"The Senator" Ricky Ervins (Redskins RB)
-Eric "Sleeping With" Bienemy
-Vinny Testaverde "Vinny-Vidi-Vici"
So many others... Oddibe (Young Again) McDowell in baseball was a classic too
Jay “ hear me see me “ feely
The time when he had a kick blocked and he was singing
“Jay hear me... see me... feely ... kicky... blocky...losey”
Charles show me the way
You mentioned toomer and Calloway...
but I was not a Stuart Scott fan initially. I didn't dislike him, just thought he was a newer incarnation of what had become stale at ESPN and he didn't bring much new in terms of talent from Dan Patrick, Kenny Mayne, and his other contemporaries other than the obvious racial difference, but I never viewed him as a black sportscaster, simply a sportscaster who was just like the others on sports center. But he was different, in retrospect, much different.
And I guess this may be slight revisionist history or maybe my own maturation, but I stumbled across some of his speeches and award presentations including his Jimmy V award acceptance speech and "highlights" of his career and I feel like the world could use more Stuart Scott's and he's the kind of person who just isn't appreciated enough "in the moment". He didn't change when he was diagnosed with cancer, in fact he remained almost the exact same person through his entire ordeal, I changed.
and I think him for that (at least partly).
not sure this belongs in a Berman thread, but since someone mentioned Stuart Scott I thought it was timely since I literally just watched his Jimmy V acceptance speech yesterday.
For people into reflection (especially this time of year) the linked youtube is great.

I also remember Craig Kilborn saying of NBA center Arvydas Sabonis: "He's not your Vydas, he's not my Vydas, he's Arvydas!" It used to crack me up whenever he did NBA highlights.

Well said, Stu Scott was so great. And I think the loss of Scott really affected ESPN negatively.

I remember Stuart Scott and someone else making fun of Boubacar Aw for the Georgetown Hoyos in 1995, singing The Commodores classic Brick House when he put up a shot, they would say AW! It was hilarious.

Yeah...Kilborn always cracked me up too.
As far as Berman goes reading this thread I will say the cliche absence make the heart grow fonder is accurate.
Berman is an example of beating something into the ground until you hate it. Of not knowing when less is more. Of not being the story but reporting the story.
Once his act became more important in his own mind than the people and stories he was covering it badly jumped the shark. But when it was new and fresh it was great.
Berman was the main reason ESPN fired all of the iconic original SportsCenter guys. They didn't want stars they wanted generic news readers. They've got that now but but no one needs to watch SportsCenter anymore. By the time it airs it's old news or the game you just watched is being highlighted.
