Sam Beal - our third round pick.

Ira : 1/1/2019 8:36 am
I'll start by saying that I've never seen him play and I'm hoping that other posters who have seen him will share their observations. What I've read is that he's very good in coverage, but his tackling and run support need some work. Does this sound right?

I've linked an article on him by Draftwire.

He won't need to tackle much in the secondary since

I know it is "cool" to offer the one liner quips, but what is even "cooler" are fans that know who is or isn't on the roster. Curtis signed a 1 year contract. His contract expired - some would say when he made the business decision to not make his last tackle.
What I loved
robbieballs2003 : 1/1/2019 8:53 am : link
was hearing that the Giants had him creating scouting reports on our upcoming opponents. So, instead of jist missing a year and focusing strictly on rehab he is being taught about what it takes to succeed at this level. I expect growing pains and nothing is guaranteed but starting him off with somethimg like this is teaching him about the work ethic needed to do well in this league on top of having a leg up on rookies who are just trying to learn a whole new life. Hopefully it works out well for him.

Can’t say I know much about him other than what I’ve read/seen but everyone expects him to start opposite Jenkins next season. We shall see
I hope that he is able to start for Webb.
Diver_Down : 1/1/2019 8:59 am : link
I think Jenkins will be back at least for 1 more year. It would have been nice if our beat reporters would have actually asked a question here or there during the season with regards to the rehab of his surgery. I hope he is fully healed and ready to hit the ground running this spring. There is no time to waste in his development. With only having him signed for 4 years, we already lost 1 year of the rookie contract. I do like what Rob mentioned. The mental reps of watching tape has to have better prepared himself for when he sees the field.

At that spot, he needs to turn into an eventual starter.

Beal May Turn Out Great
Giants38 : 1/1/2019 10:06 am : link
But our joke of a front office thought we would compete this year, and figure we would be sacrificing a much lower third round pick. Oops. It’s quite possible Beal would have gone much higher had he stayed in college another year, so the potential is there, but it is questionable whether we’d have used this selection if we knew we were going to be this bad.

That said, I’d wager we are going to be in the hunt for a third round pick by dangling a player, a la JPP last year. Jenkins’ play really improved the second half of the year, so it’s quite possible we could net a second or third for him. I’d guess we could get a third for Collins if we put the transition tag on him as well, and attempt to trade him to an interested party. We’ll see.

ok, you are cooler...
I’m not sure a 4.47 40 is fast enough for a CB. Depends on game speed

I would think OV could be traded for a third. If JPP can get a third, we should be able to get a third for OV.

Amazing the lengths some on here will go to rip the organization...

So they picked Beal because they thought they would be good?

You and bw have a lot in common...
3rd rounders bust
UConn4523 : 1/1/2019 10:47 am : link
frequently. So what’s the difference between him busting due to a 3rd rounder spent in 2018 or 2019?

One way or another we are going to take a CB and it likely won’t be with the 6th pick so what’s all the fucking complaining about? He could be good, try waiting or is that off the table for so many of you dolts?

Reese & Co cornered the market on finding 3rd round busts...
I will be interested in what he weighs
Dave on the UWS : 1/1/2019 10:54 am : link
when he reports. One of the complaints was at 177 he was too slight to be a starter.
As I've said in other threads
Jay in Toronto : 1/1/2019 10:55 am : link
I'm concerned that he wasn't even named all-MAC. The guys who were went very low or undrafted. (Though to be fair, I don't know how they performed this year).

I think conference awards are more telling than national -- they are ranked by people who watch the players much more closely.

Is neck in neck with Greedy Williams as the best CB in the draft received a 2nd day draft grade and is considering staying.

Wonder what draft grade they would be giving Beal

I hear you, but I’d prefer to look forward. I never really thought previous drafts are an indicator of future picks, let alone from separate GMs. But if I did do that why not look at Carter and Hill?
A
AcidTest : 1/1/2019 11:15 am : link
lot of teams were willing to use a third round supplemental pick on Beal IIRC. But people are already putting unrealistic expectations on him. He'll essentially be a rookie in 2019.

Absolutely not an indicator..agree.

My comment was how about high 3rd round bust rates and how we know better than anyone.
Got it
UConn4523 : 1/1/2019 11:35 am : link
yeah we do. Hopefully it’s a less frequent occurrence.
I met some of his teammates
MotownGIANTS : 1/1/2019 12:32 pm : link
at the preseason game against the Lions ... they were very high on him as a person, player and teammate. Said his natural position was on the outside. They spoke on the injury (did not seem overly concerned) said once he heals he'll be that deal.

Side note: They were doing community work with a local PAL football team they coach. So hopefully the reviews on him as a person and teammate are accurate. Because remember he was not in the supp. draft due to health or off-field stuff .... it was academics. So hopefully he stays healthy and has no issues learning the playbook.

That's nice to hear. One thing Gettleman seems to be doing well is building a team with fine young men like that.

He's a high third rounder. If he busts, we fucked up.

Heard a scout discuss greedy Williams and he has him as a 2nd round grade. He said every scout he’s spoken to doesn’t think he’s a first rounder only the media does

That isn’t my point. People are up and arms about him being picked this year because we were in “win now” mode. My response to that is what difference does it make if he bust a year earlier if he indeed turns into a bust?

Plenty of high round rookies get hurt and basically red shirt because of it. But since it was a supplemental pick it’s somehow a collosal fuck up? Makes no sense.

Exactly! I don’t understand these idiots blasting the organization for a player that has not even stepped on the field yet. From what I have heard, Beal was possibly projected to be a first rounder in the 2019 draft. We should be hopeful that he plays like a 1st rounder.

His off field issue dealt with grades. He was in limbo re: academic eligibility so he opted for the draft.

All picks can bust. We can beat this dead horse again I guess but Reese was horrendous after round 1. Both of Gettleman's third picks at least look like NFL level Players. Hopefully this kid can be one too. I'm far more trusting of this new GM than Reese and Ross
