Question for BBI's O-Line Experts

sb from NYT Forum : 1/2/2019 3:53 pm
What is your assessment of Halapio. After the game on Sunday Bob Papa said that the Giants are very high on him, and this has been confirmed by both Shurmur and Gettleman.

I don't see it. In preseason he looked the same or worse than Jones, and before he was hurt I thought he played poorly and it seemed like there were a lot more blown blocking assignments when he was in there. I mean, the guy played only 8 games at center in his life before the Giants made him a starter.

I am concerned that the Giants won't go after a solid veteran C in free agency and will bank on Halapio living up to their high expectations.

What's your take? All input appreciated and I'd love to be proven wrong.
Not much to go on

He was the week 1 starter and there's something to be said that he earned that job. Got hurt in week 2.

I thought he played pretty well week 1.

I should add though, I am no OL expert.

I was thinking the same thing. I would also hope they don’t rest on their laurels and hope they try to bring in an established veteran to solidify the middle of that line instead. Bring back Halapio and Pulley to compete for back up duty. The thing with Halapio is that he provides good versatility as a back up because he was a Guard.

But, whereas I promoted the idea when he first arrived (Pat's practice squad?) Of him at center, that was 3 cycles ago, had nobody else, based on + weight and had done a bit of it.

It's high time for a blue chipper at center and he's not that.
Is there hope the OC J. Hilapio could "Upgrade" the position next yr?
SGMen : 1/2/2019 5:27 pm : link
Sure, as there isn't much room but UP from here!!!
I think John has the heart, work ethic and size to do better. He has been around. He doesn't have many starts and I believe he'll be 27 or 28 next year. I say we keep him and see what we have?

But I would not be shocked in the least if we went 1. OT, 2. OG and 3. OC in this year's draft. I wouldn't be shocked at all given those are 3 needs. If we sign a top ORT he'll cost a bunch so I'm not sure we can do that UNLESS we make some major cuts with Eli, Rhett Ellison, Olivier Vernon and Janori Jenkins easy cut targets due to salaries.

If we stay pat and use only the draft to upgrade, it may not be a totally bad idea but this assumes we re-sign whom we already have on hand AND decide not to overpay for a position of need.
I suggested that 3 or 4 drafts back but I don't think the value is the

There In this draft to go 1,2,3 on OL.

I'd go 1,2,3 on D... best overall D prospects, including true DL, and go apeshit after the top free agent center.

Wheeler may still improve.

He did

not impress me week 1 but that was week 1. If they see him as an improvement then bring him back and let him compete. Maybe take a late round C to compete with him if they really believe he is the answer. I just hope they solidify the RT and RG position in FA and the Draft
Shurmur & DG
bc4life : 1/2/2019 7:16 pm : link
think highly of him. Tough based one a few games and the OL operates as a unit. They were horrendous the games he was in - but how much of that was on him?
Holapio

is a backup at best.....
Halapio is not a starter in my mind
.McL. : 1/2/2019 11:53 pm : link
When I watched the line play not only did I see confusion and a a lack of chemistry, I saw some really strange line calls that had 4 blocking 2 on ones side and 2 vs 3 on the other. Made no sense. And that happened multiple times. Its like he was misidentifying the mike. And that job used to be Eli, but now its on the center.
The one thing, and I’m not expert on line play, was

His snapping. Very very inconsistent with his snaps. Would be a huge help if he could come back and man the center position and solidify this line. That would basically mean we need to find one starting tackle assuming JB is retained.
I don't know,
section125 : 1/3/2019 6:55 am : link
but the guy was in his first year as center. Shurmur was a starting center at Mich St. So I'd say he knows better than all of us. Gettleman seems pretty good at finding offensive lineman.

Since they'd evaluate centers in FA or the draft, I'd think they'd have a handle as to how good Halapio can be. He is huge.
If Gettleman
cjac : 1/3/2019 7:26 am : link
does what he says he wants to do

there will be competition at every position on the field.

While i'll agree Halapio didnt look great in that first game, he is going to have to earn the starter spot.
Halapio should be back
Jay on the Island : 1/3/2019 10:52 am : link
but only to compete for the starting C job. I would prefer that they bring in better competition regardless of how they feel about Evan Brown.

Not being argumentative but I am wondering what your are basing this on? Picks/signings from Carolina?
I thought Jones was better...
Johnny5 : 1/3/2019 11:43 am : link
And Greco looked better than both in preseason. So that tells me not so good. He got abused against the Cowboys before getting hurt that's for sure.

To be fair it was the 2nd game in a new system against a good defense with an OL in serious flux. If they are set on him I would hope I'm wrong on him but he seems a journeyman to me. I feel like we need to upgrade the position as well as RT and to a lesser degree RG.
