Looking at salary figures, NYG not getting good return at LB

Eric from BBI : Admin : 1/2/2019 4:40 pm
The LB salary numbers stick out like a sore thumb.

FYI, anything marked N/A simply means the salary figures not released by NFLPA yet.

You can also see who will be free agents...

The contracts given to them

are classic examples of why overspending is a significant gamble I'd prefer to avoid.

And we will have $9.3 million in DEAD MONEY against the 2019 cap (so far). I don't recall that ever being so high.
OV will do that alone.

Ogeltree at $4M is not bad. Next year at $10M? Hard to imagine that DG traded for him and didn't want him for long term. I would suspect he'll be approached for a restructure.

OV's contract is ridiculous.

So is Kareem Martin's.

Ogletree with go to $10M not only next year but in 2021.

At TE, Rhett Ellison's figures are ridiculous too.

Sorry, just noted the column years. $4M for 2019 is fine. $10M in 2020 needs to be restructured.
correction
Eric from BBI : Admin : 1/2/2019 4:51 pm : link
$9M for Ogletree in 2021.

He was just restructured. He is not being restructured again.

The constant restructuring are why we are in this mess to begin with.

Cut bait with talent if it comes down to restructuring.
I think what you meant to say
RobCarpenter : 1/2/2019 4:52 pm : link
Is that the Vernon is incredibly overpaid.

about switching to a 3-4, especially since the LB corp had been a weakness for years now.
I feel like I've posted this each of the last two offseasons
Go Terps : 1/2/2019 5:00 pm : link
Vernon's contract was abysmal for the Giants the moment it was signed.

Check out Spotrac's valuation tool...it helps paint the picture. With the Giants, the picture is ugly.

That's alot of money to simply be a positive influence.

Martin blows
Martin played better

as year went on. Think him knowing Bettcher's scheme had an impact on the signing. Contract is another matter

obviously when you look at Martin
bc4life : 1/2/2019 5:10 pm : link
and compare with a team like Pittsburgh's OLBs - you want to upgrade
Gettleman
Marty866b : 1/2/2019 5:13 pm : link
Look at the players and the contracts he gave out after last season. Bad enough to be terminated IMO.

Eric - there is an excellent Over the Cap Podcast to check out on this if you haven't already - linked below.
Over the Cap sobering look at Giants - ( New Window )
It’s really Olivier Vernon
twostepgiants : 1/2/2019 5:20 pm : link
He must go.

Ogletree is fine for 2019 but then he needs to go.

It’s also Janoris Jenkins and Rhett Ellison.
Which figure on the list is worse?
WideRight : 1/2/2019 5:23 pm : link

Stweart's or Solder's?

I go Solder's because he's eight times higher AND prevents the Giants from finding a good left tackle. Stewart's contract was awful, but it doesn't stop us from having a great RB....
Ogletree did enough
jeff57 : 1/2/2019 5:40 pm : link
But they need another ILB. Martin should go.
Martin was the worst deal in FA imo
adamg : 1/2/2019 5:42 pm : link
especially since we could have just re-upped Kennard rather than bring in an inferior talent at similar money.
Vernon, Ellison, Stewart
WillVAB : 1/2/2019 5:55 pm : link
Easy cuts.
Ogletree would appear to be a restructure target
regulator : 1/2/2019 6:11 pm : link
He's due a $6m roster bonus on the first day of the league year.

Issue is AGAIN that these guys who are wedded to a scheme try and change too fast. They had Snacks and could have dont the best w what they had. But then DG goes out and over lays Ogletree and Martin. Add to that the usual Reese fuck up w Vernon. They should have run more 4-3. Thennof course they gave away Harrison for a measly 5th.

Gettlemn had what seemed to be a very good draft. But he needs to just as well this year. Team is threadbare on D and they will need very big contributions from Carter and Beal to make up for his total waste of FA dollars. Both those guys will need to be starters IMO
...
christian : 1/2/2019 6:18 pm : link
Vernon and Martin are producing at replacement level. Neither would be missed.

Ogletree is very athletic facing the play, but much like Collins, when has to turn and run it's a problem.

I get a chuckle when folks say just fix the pass rush and the defense is fixed; aside from being totally untrue, fixing the pass rush is hard and expensive.

Yes, but the sort of unquantifiable, oblique effect a guy like Stewart has on team chemistry can't have a price put upon it.
Vernon is a very good player
bc4life : 1/2/2019 6:52 pm : link
but not producing at the numbers he's being paid. That being said - think his production will improve when they have other pass rushers.

Jenkins salary really isn’t out of line when you look at the other top CB salaries around the league.

What a terrible roster. Even worse allocation of cap dollars and management.

Because it is easier to find and fit in 3-4 LBs than it is to find 4-3 pass rushing DEs and DTs. I think the Giants did pretty well in one offseason.
