A quarterback question?

Tark10 : 1/3/2019 9:48 am
Would Case Keenum be a viable option should Gettleman release Eli? The Broncos are in search of a new coach. The new guy may want his own guy. Keenum is only 30 yrs old and had success under Shurmer in Minnesota in 2017. He has the experience and mobility to be an asset at a reasonable price. This would also allow the 1st round pick to be a pass rusher or an offensive lineman. I believe Keenum received only a two year contract with Denver. Perhaps a second or third round draft choice could entice a trade possibility. I would rather go this route then Bridgewater.
Case Keenum
dep026 : 1/3/2019 9:48 am : link
sucks donkey balls.
Don't have a third
jeff57 : 1/3/2019 9:50 am : link
And wouldn't give up a second. If Manning left, and they needed a QB for one year, he'd be ok given the success he had with Shurmur. Beyond that, no.
A 2nd round pick?
YAJ2112 : 1/3/2019 9:52 am : link
for Case Keenum?

Ho Lee Fuck
He stinks
5BowlsSoon : 1/3/2019 9:54 am : link
No thanks
Is this..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/3/2019 9:54 am : link
really a Quarterback question, or a specific ask about Keenum?

And is it really a question or just some ramblings about Shurmur and Keenum working together in the past?
Just for reference....
Britt in VA : 1/3/2019 9:59 am : link
Case Keenum signed a 2 year, 36 million dollar contract (25 guaranteed) with Denver.
Have you seen him play this year?
GiantsRage2007 : 1/3/2019 10:02 am : link
Might as well let Lauletta take over for 1/25th the price.
I'm certainly no Eli cheerleader,
bigbluehoya : 1/3/2019 10:04 am : link
to put it lightly. But cutting Eli's biggish bucks to add Keenum for biggish bucks is a pretty gross idea.

I have to imagine that a certain number of these threads are started for the pure purpose of inciting the Eli squad, but it sure can be hard to separate the honest bad threads from the intentionally incendiary ones.
I d rather
joeinpa : 1/3/2019 10:05 am : link
Lauletta than Case K
Totally agree with bluehoya
Dnew15 : 1/3/2019 10:11 am : link
on this.
But I will tell you this - I think that Case K and Eli have about the same percentage chance of leading the Giants to playoffs next year - 0%.
That's the same chance that Kyle L has as well, at least he is ... what ... 1/50th of the price?
A QB answer!
Ivan15 : 1/3/2019 10:12 am : link
He ain’t it!
Does this team really give you any confidence
jcn56 : 1/3/2019 10:28 am : link
that it would succeed with a guy like Keenum?

If they had built up a strong defense, a decent OL and still managed to retain Barkley and Beckham, then maybe. Expecting Keenum to carry you to anything just sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Eli has 0% chance ...

You did watch this season, yes? Where one of the worst defensive squads in the league allowed how many late scores to lose? Four?

I'm an Eli realist. But the guy wasn't bad this season, all things considered. The defense was the biggest issue, after the early O-line atrocities. Both of those things played directly against the perception of Eli's success.

I wonder how Eli Manning's stats look if the team finished 9-7, which was just a few plays away.
I watched every snap of every game
Dnew15 : 1/3/2019 10:55 am : link
just like I'm sure you have.
But to call yourself an Eli realist and know for a fact that an Eli Manning lead New York Giants have a realistic shot at making the playoffs next year is not realistic.
The O-line AND the defense will not be fixed next season. It will take a superhuman effort by another level QB to lead a NYG team in a modified version of what they have this year to the playoffs. Eli can't do that anymore - I'm sorry. 2011 Eli - sure. Not the 39 year old one that will QB next year.
keenum
Platos : 1/3/2019 10:56 am : link
I dont like him at all. he seems like a one track minded QB. like he's working off a script. If this is the play called, I will only throw it to X receiver. no matter how many WRs got traded or got injured, i'm just gonna throw it to the 5th string replacement...
I mean if Eli chose to retire and you had to pick up a QB
bigbluescot : 1/3/2019 10:56 am : link
for a year, he wouldn't a terrible option if the Bronco's cut him loose (they probably won't)

Shumur has shown he can get moderately decent play out of Keenum.
Do you seriously think Keenum would have success here working
SterlingArcher : 1/3/2019 11:15 am : link
behind the Ginats crap oline? Please stop the insanity!
I don't like Keenum
ShockNRoll : 1/3/2019 11:37 am : link
He had a flash of success under Shurmur last year, but I think there are better veteran options out there in the event Eli does not return. I would be happy to have Foles come in for 2 years, who had his best year under Shurmur in Philly. I would even prefer picking up Bortles who will undoubtedly get the ax from Jacksonville. Not a popular opinion, but I don't think he is as bad as people think.

That all said, I believe Eli will be back and this will all be meaningless talk.
I'd rather
Gman11 : 1/3/2019 11:38 am : link
they put Beckham at QB. He has a lifetime perfect completion percentage.
Case Keenum?
Optimus-NY : 1/3/2019 12:50 pm : link
....
Toth029 : 1/3/2019 1:20 pm : link
Keenum, Files, Tyrod, Bridgewater, none of these dudes are better than Eli. Even Eli at this stage.

But if Eli retires they'll go to a vet.

Holy cr@p. Lower end of vet starter money, but that's still a lot of cash for Keenum.

And that's one of the major reasons I say it makes more sense to just keep Eli and draft his replacement, rather than cut Eli, because his dead money plus the amount of salary for the new placeholder vet will probably equal or exceed just keeping Eli.

So would you take the step down from Eli to Keenum for a similar, or bigger, cap hit?
The Giants' next QB should not be a current starter on another team
Go Terps : 1/3/2019 3:41 pm : link
The current starters that may be available: Flacco, Foles, Keenum, and the like...these guys are not preferable options to going with Lauletta as the starter.

The Giants should cut Eli. It's time.

I know many say that there aren't a lot of QB options out there, but that's not true. I see 3 viable ways to start 2019:

1. Lauletta is the starter
2. Draft a QB and make him the starter
3. Acquire a backup QB currently on another roster that is making less than $1M. These guys are all over the league. Here are some names to start:

Jacoby Brissett
Kyle Sloter
DeShone Kizer
Mason Rudolph
Josh Dobbs
Jeff Driskel
Taysom Hill
Nick Mullens

The point is, there are many options. It's just going to require some creativity and the front office getting out of its comfort zone for once.

I agree and would lean toward #3 and then #2. I don't see the point to drafting a QB in round 1 who is deemed less of a prospect than the guys last year. You might as well just start a current backup (including Lauletta) this year.
You cut Eli, you save 17M......
Doomster : 1/3/2019 4:10 pm : link
You sign someone to take his place, how much is it going to cost? More than 17M? Less than 17M? How many years?

Can I have what you're smoking? I'm not talking about ELi-- I'm talking about the "which was just a few plays away" bullshit.

Some of you - your homerism knows no bounds. WHat about all the games they went against a 2nd string QB? That doesn't count, right? Yeah we would have beaten the Bears with their #1 QB.

Just think all those years when we were real good we'd play a sub-.44 team and win a tight game we'd say that we played down to the competition. SO now when we stink and lose a tough game it's not that the other team played down to us - so says our unbias fello Giants fans-- it's "we were just as good as them"nonsense.

**Next year with great moves and a crummy schedule anything can happen. But let's not pretend that this rotten team was just a few plays a way. They were FOUR GAMES away.

What about
Trevor Siemian?
I don't

know how this is gonna play out, but I'd like to see Eli finish out his career with the Giants. Just keep adding pieces.

Agreed. That $17M saved by cutting Eli can be used for FA.
