Please no Foles

Am I alone in this? Not only do I hate the idea of rooting for the guy, I dont even think heís that good. He sucked when he left Philly.

That would be a tough pill to swallow rooting for this team.

Alone? No, I'd say that's probably the majority opinion... or at least should be.

Paying Nick Foles significant money would be a horrendous move.
If they are paying a QB north of 20 million

this year it will be Eli not Foles. They are looking to lower the cap hit at the position, not exchange 1 big contract for another.

Hell make more than Eli next year.
Some Philly fans think...
BillKo : 1/3/2019 2:51 pm : link
..Foles is content to stay as a backup and not max out on his money opportunity.

That would be foolish, because the NFL will kick him the curb when he's of no more use. So he should try to get one more max pay day. I certainly would.

Also, the Eagles really won't be able to afford him and Wentz......plus, now there are going to be doubts about Wentz due to his injury - and simply because the team seems to respond better to Foles (fact or fiction?).

My opinion of Foles: he's a quality backup. But that's it...over the long haul - 16 games - he'll start to hurt you. He plays in slow motion, and floats a ton of his passes.

Give'm credit, he played great last playoff but remember, he still played three stiff games (ATL playoff, Raiders and Cowboys reg season) in 2017. Even this year, he played average versus ATL and TB to start the season.

I think
mattyblue : 1/3/2019 3:00 pm : link
most people donít want Foles. Whatís more interesting with him will be what Philly does. Imagine they run the table and gets them to another SuperBowl, how could they just let him go? Granted I donít think they will run the table, but I imagine there has to be some big arguments between fans of the Eagles about what to do with him currently.

You don't subtract the signing bonus in this case. It's a sunk cost, so it does remain as dead money, but it would be on the books if Eli is kept, too.

Moving on from Eli saves the Giants $17MM. $11.5MM in salary, $5MM in roster bonus, $500K in workout bonus. The dead money doesn't get subtracted from that.

He's only 25. I think he actually ran a sub 4.6 at the Combine. Things were a mess while he was at Florida but he played through it and had an extra year of eligibility. So he finished up at LaTech and had a nice year.

Just a food for thought idea during this transition period - assuming the Eli era is finished.

I don't think we will dump Eli for Foles.

But if Eli retired? Yes, I can see it. A large 1 year deal (20mm or so) to come in and start in a familiar division with his old QB coach.

He's a player. 4-1 this year with the Eagles. Per 16 games, his stats would come out to something around 4,500 yards, 23tds and 12 picks.

If you look at the entirety of his career, he's played pretty well too. He stunk under Jeff Fisher... but so did all of the QBs who played under Jeff in St Louis.
Nobody's going to go crazy paying foles

LG in NYC : 1/3/2019 4:57 pm : link
but for those stating dismissively that he failed with another team... that team was the Rams with Jeff Fisher as coach. They were a dumpster fire and I am not going to hold that against Foles.

he was fairly decent in his few games with KC and Reid and then went back to the Eagles where we know what happened (ugh).

He has had success with Shurmur, has some attributes that are intriguing and has flashed on more than one occasion... so while I wouldn't want to break the bank for him... I would be open to him coming in as the starter in 2019 with a moderate 2-3 year deal.
Im a hell yes on Foles
twostepgiants : 1/3/2019 5:15 pm : link
Nick Foles is vastly underrated. I think there is draft pick bias.

The first is the impression that Foles is a backup who got hot or lucky.

Foles has been very good with the exception of his stint in St Louis and there is a reasonable explanation for that.

Foles was a 3rd round pick who showed enough to plsy in his rookie year (which we see hiw difficult that is with Webb & Lauletta) and earned the starting job in his 2nd season.

As starter, Foles threw for 27 TD to 2 INT in 10 starts which is an incredible year and he earned a Pro Bowl spot. His record was 8-2. He took over for Vick who was 2-4 as starter.

They lost in playoffs but he had 200 yards and 2 TD in a 26-24 loss to Saints. He led a 4Q comeback scoring with a minute left to take lead but Saints got FG as time expired.

The interesting thing here is that his best year was under his OC Pat Shurmur.

In his second year as starter, he was injured and threw for 13 TD to 10 int while leading a 6-2 record in 8 starts. His replacement was Sanchez who was 4-4.

The Eagles traded Foles to the Rams where he had his bad season. He went 4-7 as starter getting benched for Case Keenum. He had 2000 yds with 7 TD to 10 int. He started off well with a comeback win over the Seattle defense with 300 yds snd a TD with 34 pts.

However, it was during this season that Foles wife was hit with a mystery Illness that threw off their life. They changed their wedding plans, she was bedridden and unable to move. She was eventually diagnosed with POTS.

Foles asked for his release and signed with KC as a backup. He played 2games going 2-0 and throwing for 410 yards and 3 TD in a game and half (he led comeback in first game in relief of Smith)

He then signed with Philly as a backup and the rest is history.

He had 537 yards and 5 TD to 2 int in 3 games last regular season.

His playoffs were dominant. He had 979 yards with 6TD and 1 int in 3 games. He rolled the #1 defense in NFL in Minnesota and then Belichick defense in Super Bowl.

This year, people assume that because he struggled in wk 1 he came in and played bad. Wk 2 Foles had 333 yds and a TD. The Eagles are 4-1 with Foles yet 5-6 with Carson Wentz. He beat the Rams & Texans. He has 1750 yds 7 TD to 4 int in 5 games.

Outside of his rookie yeR, Foles is 25-13 as starter. He has 9500 pass yds and 62 TD to 28 TD.

Outside of Rams year he is 21-6 as starter and 3-1 playoffs. He has7500 yds to 55 TD and 18 int.

Yes, it was for Eagles but not the same offense. The first stint was under Chip Kelly and Pat Shurmur which is very different then the Doug Pedersen offense.

He will be 30 years old next season and will likely be in line for a contract for 3-5 seasons at 20-22 mill a year.

That is the prime of his career. The top QBs are going for 30 million now and guys like Sam Bradford are getting 15 mill.

The only time he really struggled was with Rams when his wife was sick. Foles has played well in the other 5 seasons.

Few free agents at that age come available and when they do they go for much bigger dollars.

On the Giants end. Shurmur has had success with him and will know how yo use him.

His age will allow him to be in his prime with Barkley and Odell for the length of his deal, 3-5 years

If we stick with Eli, he has maybe 2 years left and then we need a new QB change and costing some time with Odell and Barkley prime. Odell will be 29-30 heading into a QB change

If we draft a QB, they take at least 2 years to really develop if they do. So we lose that part of their prime.

The worst combo is Eli for 2 years then a rookie QB in terms if Barkley & Odell prime.

We know Foles can handle the big game.

Foles is a northeast QB can so weather isnt an issue.

I would really like a Foles signing.

If Eagle management thought they could get away with the moral issue of not giving Foles the freedom to choose his preferable landing place, Iím sure they would use that 5-7 day period before his contract expires to trade him to an AFC team.....but definitely not the Giants!

If the Giants decided to move on from Eli or Eli retires,
Someguy1978 : 1/4/2019 5:07 am : link
I would be okay with Foles. It would allow the Giants to draft and groom a QB to take over in a couple of seasons.

The QB's listed below should be available in free agency. Who would you pick?

Bridgewater
Foles
Taylor
Fitzpatrick

I'm not including Winston as it looks like Tampa is keeping him for the 2019 season. Even if Winston was available, I wouldn't want him in NY.

Foles would at least give the Giants a chance to be competitive and would be better than any QB drafted this year.

I want to add
Someguy1978 : 1/4/2019 5:12 am : link
that my preference is that the Giants keep Eli and that he doesn't retire.
One of the advantages
LakeGeorgeGiant : 1/4/2019 7:30 am : link
to moving on from Eli is the ability to save cap space with a young, cost-controlled QB.

I don't expect Files would even be on their radar.
QB Rating wise

Foles delivered the 25th best SB performance by a QB.

Eli the 27th and 47th best.

As many of us fondly remember, Phil Simms still has the best performance of all time.

I believe Foled would represent a very substantial upgrade over Eli Manning at this point in their respective careers. I think it would also destroy the Eagles if they end up doing well this postseason. I believe Shurmur could use his skill-set effectively. At this point in their careers full seems to come up bigger in pressure spots than Eli does. That said I wouldn't sign into him very long hundred million contract.

by his play in the super bowl that you'd gloss over the fact that he failed in two other places where they thought he was a QB1 as well.

And the team that he won with couldn't wait to put him on the bench as quickly as possible, probably even before Wentz was fully healthy.

That some Giants fans are intrigued by the possibility of a large, strong armed QB that throws deep well and seems to play better when the stakes rise and outplayed Tom Brady in a recent Super Bowl is just....outrageous. I mean, who would want a QB that has looked average in the regular season at points of his career and looked excellent in others. FUCK!!!

I agree with everything you said here......I just have my limits.

I don't care if he's an upgrade. I don't want to watch an Eagles QB quarterback the Giants. I just don't. It was hard enough watching Brian Mitchell, Cullen Jenkins and Mike Patterson. It's more than laundry.

I UNDERSTAND what you say. I grew up on one of the Eagle/Giant fan borders in NJ. We were split evenly. Fights on the bus, fights in school, fights in the neighborhood because of the mutual hate.

best thing about Foles is that someone will pay him like he is "THE" guy. My hope is the Jacksonville's of the world or Broncos of the world or any of the real QB needed teams end up with the Foles and Flacco type guys which could help put the Giants in position of getting the good young QB; now is there one worth taking this year? I dont know.
