NFT: When will St Johns get some respect

floridagiantsfan : 1/3/2019 5:56 pm
20 point win over Marquette #16 ranked. Robbed by refs or would be undefeated against SH on the road.

Got 1 vote in each of the AP or coaches polls.

Team deserves to be ranked in the top 25 at minimum
They'll be ranked this week for sure

I'm thinking #22.
In the popular "Vegas" models

St. John's ranks around 40. These are based on efficiency metrics so W-L is less important than quality of play (bad if you want to add value in closing out games, good if you want to de-value the controversial loss to Seton Hall).

KenPom: 40
Sagarin: 41
Sagarin Predictor: 44
Massey: 40
Massey Composite (47 different ratings): 44

It seems that they have one of the easiest strength of schedules in the country thus far (317 and 316 in KenPom and Sagarin, respectively). I'm not criticizing the scheduling because I'm sure when the schedule was made, VCU and California were expected to be higher-rated opponents, especially Cal.

I haven't watched a minute of St. John's play this season so I'm not saying where they deserve to be ranked.

I'm just offering why they might not be getting the love you think they deserve.

They make the tourney they might be a tough out. Great guard play goes a long way.
It doesn’t matter when they get ranked.

If they keep winning, they’ll get there. Rankings don’t mean shit, but I get that it seems so meaningful when the program has been down for so long. Just win Big East games, make noise or win the Big East tournament, and grab a decent NCAA seeding. Never mind the rankings now. They don’t matter.
Looking forward to a great game on Saturday.

Go Hoyas! (But, also, of course: Go Big EAST!)
I've been watching their games this season given the state of the

Giants and Knicks. I have been a fan but also somewhat of a skeptic, given that they have often been inconsistent and played down to the level of their opponent, and also have a relatively small front line - a lot of wing players. However, even the Seton Hall loss (since the Hall has been playing very well too) and now the Marquette win have me believing in them more. Would be great if they keep this up.
and as to rankings - I agree with B -

I think #22 seems about right. But it's possible they won't crack the top 25 just yet.
If they beat Villanova (even though Nova is in a retooling year)
dpinzow : 1/3/2019 8:11 pm : link
they will get a ton of respect. The problem is they played an atrocious non-conference schedule. Beating #16 Marquette by 20 is a really good win to put on the resume though

They got screwed by the officials at the end of the Seton Hall loss and should be unbeaten. The win over Marquette is a very strong one to put on a tournament resume and they didn't have a win of that nature because they played a terrible non-conference schedule. VCU is probably the only quality team they played and beat out of conference
I caught the end of the SH game ...
Spider56 : 1/4/2019 8:06 am : link
and the ref who blew the whistle on the inbounds play should be fired and banned from B.B. forever ... I can’t believe Mullins stayed as calm as he did. My hero Bobby Knight would have slugged the guy ... and ... oh, I’m not a St Johns fan.

Should be a good game. Hoyas quietly playing some really solid ball. Hopefully Mac can go, but I also want to see Malinowski continue to get more minutes.

I absolutely love what Josh LeBlanc is bringing to the squad. 10 and 8 on 67% shooting +defense +energy.

Who knows what this season will end up being for Georgetown, but regardless I have to say they are light years ahead of where I expected them to be in year 2 under Pat.
Win Today
Jeffrey : 1/5/2019 8:46 am : link
is essential. My Hoyas are young and improving but nowhere near the talent level of St. Johns. While I hold great hope for the future with Ewing, a loss to the Hoyas on the road in an arena that will have as many St. John's fans as Hoya fans would indicate that St. Johns is not as good as its record.
only saw a little of the game today as I was working,

but looks like it was a great game.

What happened to the thread about it? I thought there was one earlier today.
Fun game to watch

i remember those early 80's games. Nice to see Ewing and Mullen still going at it.

I just saw the highlights (wasn't able to watch it) but it was one of the better CBB games of the year in general, aside from Duke-Gonzaga (which is the game of the year so far in CBB)
Nice win, St Johns fans

Helllll of a basketball game.

These are two teams that I don’t necessarily think will go far, but I won’t be surprised by any win they have.

(I’ll be torturously replaying that last regulation turnover in my head for the rest of the night...over a few Tito’s/rocks...)
new rankings out - St John's is #24 in AP Top 25
Del Shofner : 1/7/2019 5:05 pm : link
and #23 in Coaches Poll. Seton Hall is in "others receiving votes."
