On this date: Belichick resigns as Jets head coach On Jan. 4, 2000, one day after it was announced that Bill Belichick would succeed Bill Parcells as Jets head coach, he resigned and went on to become the Patriots coach a month later. |
The fact that the guy went on to become arguably the greatest coach of all time is just pure Jets.
There were stories that both Parcells and Belichick wanted no part of Woody. Which 19 years later makes sense. Parcells quit his job every time there was an owner change until the went to Dallas. He quit the Giants when Tisch bought in, quit the pats when Kraft bought in, quit the Jets when Woody bought in but that doesn't explain Belichick or his obsessive hatred of the Jets to this day.
Makes me think it wasn't really about working for Parcells. He's long gone but Woody is still there. Maybe this explains it:
“Due to the various uncertainties surrounding my position as it relates to the team’s new ownership, I have decided to resign as the head coach of the New York Jets.”
He reportedly wrote on a napkin, “I resign as HC of the NYJ,” to tell the team of his decision before holding a 30-minute press conference detailing his reasoning.
“The agreement that I made was with Mr. Hess, Bill Parcells and Mr. Gutman, and that situation has changed dramatically. And it’s going to change even further,” Belichick said. “There are a lot of unanswered questions here,” he told reporters. “I have been concerned about it since Leon Hess died.”
Mark S has a great line. Said it was like watching a hostage video.

On Jan. 3, 2000, he was named head coach of the Jets. On Jan. 4, he resigned, turning the tables on what was meant to be an introductory press conference. Instead of talking about how excited he was to be the team’s head coach, he explained why he wouldn’t be taking the job.

Belichick didn't want Parcells hovering over him once more and meddling. He'd been under Parcells thumb for quite some time at that point and he hated it
Not sure why it would be Woody aside from the fact that he outright didn't know Woody and didn't know what to expect from him as an owner. Woody didn't turn out to be a nightmare like Snyder but or senile Al Davis. Heck he's been better than that dolt Hess. I don't love Woody as an owner but it's not like he hasn't tried to win (his brother I like better as a caretaker and is better suited to run the club)
Kraft got into Belichick's ear and offered him more control and a Parcells free football environment. Plus New England in 2000...did they even know they had a football team? There wasn't the kind of football media and pressure for Belichick as he'd likely have to deal with in NY.
If Belichick stayed on here, not loving his situation, no Brady, tensions with Parcells, it would've been a nightmare

Lol keep telling yourself that.

Well do tell what would've happened, because disgruntled coaches who are uncomfortable in their situation and don't want to be there always build dynasties right?

Ah yes let's speculate that Belichick would have half assed if because he was "not loving the situation" whatever that means. Also Parcells was gone how would tensions with Parcells affect him when Parcells wasn't with the Jets anymore? If you're going to try to argue that Belichick is only good because of Brady then you once again showed what a clueless homer you are.
For the record which head coaching canidates do you want the Jets to hire and which ones would you hate?

Do you have any recollection of Belichick before Brady? It wasn't a pretty picture.
Parcells was with the Jets as GM in 2000. Belichick would've coached that year. Belichick refused that arrangement. How would he know what Parcells was up to? He knew how flaky he was. He knew one fine day Parcells could wake up, give him the boot, and take back the HC job
Dick Rehbein, who was responsible for Brady's drafting, was not in the Jets org. Where was Brady coming from?
I want Mike McCarthy. He's the best choice to built this thing up from Bowles disaster. He can instill a disciplined winning culture, accountability, build a solid staff, and get the best out of Darnold. The lack of preparation and quitting that happened so often under Bowles will be gone
after him it would be either of the Harbaughs, but I think Jim is staying at Michigan for now and the John H situation is too volatile. Plus his team is in the playoffs for who knows how long. Don't want to be left without a chair when the music stops
3rd in line would be Arians but Bowles is his buddy so I don't know if he would step in here. Jets haven't really been linked to him anyway
Kingsbury would be next but he's a ways down
Want nothing to do with Caldwell or Eric Bieniemy, Monken, Kris Richard, Zac Taylor or anybody who has never been a HC before at the collegiate or pro level.
1)The fact that Parcells did this without consulting him because he was afraid that Belichick wasn't going to wait around to succeed Parcells anymore and was headed to New England. Tuna thought he could avoid that problem by suddenly retiring as head coach and elevating Belichick, but he never talked about it with Belichick. Belichick felt used.
2)The uncertain Jets ownership situation.
Harbaugh as well. If I were you I wouldn't be upset with Caldwell even though he wouldn't be my top choice. Caldwell is well respected and he worked wonders with Stafford in Detroit. I think McCarthy's offense is an ideal fit for Darnold though. Caldwell would be a better fit for Mayfield or Rosen.
Belichick went 10-6 with Matt Cassel at QB. Sure BB's tenure in Cleveland was not good but he learned from his mistakes and became a great coach. We see teams with great QB's miss the playoffs on more than one occasion but the Patriots are in literally every year except for the season when Cassel was the QB and they missed out despite being 10-6. Belichick would never worry that Parcells would boot him out as HC and take his job. Parcells was the one who forced the Jets to include the clause where Belichick would be the head coach once Parcells retired.
11-5, actually
