NGT: Could teams overuse play actuon?

Interesting read.
Play Action - ( New Window )
would love to see the Giants

use play action >10 times per game with Barkley! I'd even consider taking it a step further and make all early passes play action. Then have an offensive assistant watching the LBs and as soon as they stop biting feature a heavy dose of Barkley.
Love what The Shurm

Said about doing more of what works and less of what doesn't.

We have probably seen the last of the mysterious Quintuple Reverse, for example.
There was a TD drive against Indy in which the Giants either used

play action or handed off to Saquon on 7 of the 8 plays. With a weapon like Saquon, play action became a focal point of the offense, especially when Odell got hurt.
I don't think you can overuse it..

...when the run game is working, and hurting the other team.

Linebackers need to jump in to stop it.........

Only if the run game is ineffective.

We most certainly could overuse it if we had someone like Paul Perkins toting the majority of the carries and no one was worried about him beating a light box.

With Barkley, you can use a ton of PA and even RPO concepts to suck back-7 players in near the box since they're always going to have their eyes on him and know he's the guy they've got to stop.

Especially with Eli - who thrives on PA rollouts and has always been a strong PA passer in general.

I don't know who the Giants QB is going to be next year, but if we give it one more go with Eli, I hope we continue to reinforce the OL and continue to move in this direction. We were throwing the football far too much early in the year.
If the Giants go new QB

(well not if, when) they need a kid that has taken snaps under center. Only way effective PA works. Wonder how long it takes to learn how to drop back if the new QB was a shot gun QB only.
Slowing Defensive Pursuit and Speed...creating Space

So many "stand up and run defenders" on the football field...you need to slow them down...you need to mis-direct them. Good offenses are showing "Action" on most plays.... Play Action, RPO, Reverse Action--- anything to cause the defensive speed to sit down for a count or quickly over pursue.

It also helps

when your QB knows how to sell it and doesn't just go through the motions

That's not necessarily true. You can still run effective PA/RPO concepts out of the shotgun.

Peyton was a devastating PA passer in Denver (before he lost his mojo) and they had him in the gun on nearly every play.
