Police in Arizona are investigating a long-term care facility after a report, based on a single anonymous source, that a woman who has been in a vegetative state for at least a decade gave birth. Phoenix police would only say that "the matter is currently under investigation," when asked about the report of a patient in a vegetative state at Hacienda HealthCare facility giving birth to a baby boy on Dec. 29. An unidentified source told local station KTVK that caretakers weren't aware the woman was pregnant until shortly before she gave birth, and a nurse only realized that the patient was in labor when she started to moan. The source, said by KTVK to be someone "familiar with the situation," said the baby is healthy. |
I don't believe vegetative state is the same as comatose
it should be easy to find the pig given DNA testing. as long as the police have pc, they'll get a buccal swab from the suspect and compare it to the boy. if a match, he'll be charged with rape in an easy case for the prosecutors.
also, are you in fairfax, va?
I'm afraid to ask of your experiences and how often you knew people that were involved in a situation where they were asked to give up their DNA.
Indeed, it’s not employment I recommend, but in ways I miss it.

Yep, Fairfax, VA.
I wonder what emotions her family, if she has any, are going through.
At one point, if your her parent, you feel like your daughter is dead for all intents and purposes. In a catatonic state for 10+ years after nearly drowning.
Now, you find out your daughter was very likely raped and you're going to be grandparents.
who raises this kid?
Was she married? Did she have any other children?
Maybe there are other reports of the story that have more details than this one.
A lot of questions and a made for TV plot - making me check to make sure it wasn't fake - though it's not a funny story, so no idea why it would be fake.
What if she was faking the vegetative state the whole 10+ years and at night having an affair with an orderly? Maybe that's the defense. Who can prove otherwise?
First of all, wtf?
Secondly, you can't fake a vegetative state... there would be responses to pin prick and other involuntary nerve reaction tests.
Lastly, in an imaginary fantasy world in which it would be possible to fake a persistent vegetative state, an orderly who actively hid that information from medical personnel would undoubtedly have some answering to do... then add the orderly having sex with a patient (esp one with a mental condition in which she was faking a medical condition for 10 years), and you have an orderly facing criminal charges anyway.
But, again, PJ, wtf?
Unfortunately it's not a terribly unbelievable outcome, and certainly no one is faking being in a vegetative state for 10 years.

I didn't mean to seem like was minimizing or accusing, simply posing creative suggestions the defense may eventually try.

My wtf wasn't about minimizing ... it was WTF - what jury would ever believe it would be possible to fake being in a persistent vegetative state during daylight hours only for 10 years?... you'd have a better chance to claim an alien from a spaceship attacked her... lol

Besides the EEG which would show no brain waves, hence brain dead.
I figured in a vegetative state she gets fed through a tube and maybe hooked up to some heart or brain monitors.
My vision of what it means is from the Steven Segall movie Hard to Kill.
LOL. It's still a bizarre story.
