Guidance is fine - it's terrible that he hit the kid or was abusive. That's way over the line and not at all the way a parent should handle a young, aspiring athlete.
Reminds me a bit of a very moving Player's Tribune piece I read by a hockey player a while back - his name is escaping me at the moment - but the dad was just awful to this kid. Super abusive. I can't even imagine the immense pressure and stress it could put on a young childs' psyche.
I can't stand obsessive parents of athletes. I find them fucking pathetic. Support your kid and make sure they know you have their back, don't make them feel threatened. It's a terrible thing to do to your own child.
