NFT: Need computer help - protocols for stny.rr.com

mavric : 1/5/2019 8:25 pm
I'm setting up my mother's "new" computer and she has been using Outlook Express as her mail server on her old one and she wanted the new one to be exactly as the old one (which blew up). The domain name is & lt;....& gt;@stny.rr.com (as in: southern tier new york. road runner)

Her computer isn't "new", but new to her.She wanted to stay with Windows 7 and the Microsoft Office package is from 2003 (Ver 11 I think). She chose to use MS-Outlook as her mail proxy.

Under the advanced tab, I set the incoming server - POP3 port number to: 995
and the outgoing server - SMTP port number to: 587 as suggested by the roadrunner website.

Here's the rub: under the regular tab I have to fill in 2 boxes. The first says "Incoming mail server (POP3)" followed by a box that should say "POP", "POP3" or "POP-SERVER" or something like that. I remember from a decade ago when I set it up (while the Time Warner dude was there) and I think all I did was type "POP3" in the incoming box and "SMTP" in the outgoing mail server box. I've tried every combination in the boxes and nothing seems to work.

Would appreciate any help with this. Thanks ever so much

Should just be POP

As an aside, while I get your Mom doesn’t want things to change you should convince her otherwise. Windows 7 support ends in 12 months. After that, she’ll have a ticking timebomb security-wise.

Windows 10 isn’t that different in desktop mode. Now’s the time to change.
Google search for help with Outlook Express site:microsoft.com

See link below. While I haven't read all the articles, I would be shocked if they don't answer your questions.

It may not be the answer you’re looking for, but Outlook Express? Just use Gmail.

That was very helpful. As far as telling my mother to "move on", that will never happen. She's 88 years old and flat out refuses to learn one more thing about computers and doesn't want to change what she knows. Which is a variety of card games, Facebook to follow her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and occasionally email. I've told her for a year to use a net based email like gmail, etc., but she's stubborn and wants to stick with the only thing she knows. She says her brain is full and there's no more room to learn something new. It's been a source of contention for some time, not only with me, but my brothers, sisters, nephews, etc. But we love her and will give her what she wants.

As well you should. I hope you get everything up and running for her.
