I was just reminded of this scrolling through my Twitter feed. I don’t think this is a painful memory (looking back) for a few reasons:
1. It led to Coughlin
2. It led to Eli
3. We got them back in 2011 (a far more significant game).
In a lot of ways this game had a tremendous impact on NYG history. They likely wouldn’t have beaten TB, but getting to the divisional round likely would have changed the timeline for Fassel/Collins.
I remember that offseason was all about special teams & defensive line. I believe we drafted Osi in that 2003 draft. Perhaps the SF loss bled into 2003, but if it did it was a major blessing. We hire Coughlin, draft Eli & the rest is history.
Grrrrrr.
Yup. Another dumb Giants loss. Them imploding at the end of the games has become so boring as to the point where you are 0% shocked.
Nothing over the top, but that game had me in a truly weird place for a few weeks. I felt nothing.
I’m thankful that sports don’t have that power over me anymore. It wasn’t enjoyable.
2. We started playing that too familiar prevent defense
3. The defense also lost all composure. Multiple stupid personal foul calls due to lack of discipline. Virtually no leadership at that time.
The DL was gassed chasing Garcia.....
Shaun Williams imploded.....
And the defense allowed not one, but two, two point conversions.....
While we will remember the Junkin faux pas(how many remember he had another bad snap a couple minutes earlier that resulted in a missed fg?), I will never forget the Shockey dropped td in the 3rd quarter, that led to a fg.....we never scored again....that drop just took the air out of the offense...
One of the biggest travesties ever. Refs knew they had screwed up and did absolutely nothing to fix it

I drove home from my uncles house in a silent rage. No radio post game show, no music. Just seething clenched jaw rage.
Talk about being a delusional fuckface.
I'm not old enough to understand the late 80s teams but thats easily the best Giants team I've seen get bounced from the playoffs. They were good enough to win the conference and SB that year which made the collapse hurt more.

May not have gotten the un-timed rekick but my view nevertheless...
As for that giant team. It took me a while to realize how flawed that team was. The nineties nyg offenses were so bad that I became happy if the giants offense could put up yards. The 02 team certainly put up some yards but last in the league in red zone scoring. While it's fun to entertain that team's chances TB would have been a horrible matchup for that Giants' team. Could they have won? Sure, anything is possible, but not always likely.
I carried a print out in my pocket from whatever website it was for about a week, that summarized how badly the refs botched the game and how there should have been one more untimed down for NYG to attempt the FG again. I pulled it out any time anyone who didn’t like the Giants broke my balls.
Talk about being a delusional fuckface.
I had this thought as well. I kept thinking this can’t be over, someone has to do something, this isn’t right.
Ha ha. I’ve told this story before but what the heck. My now ex gf of 16 years absolutely hated football and the fact that I loved the Giants. When the Giants were up big late in the third she called an congratulated me. I said to her, “You just fucking jinxed them and you did it on purpose. When they lose I’m never going to speak to you again.” And as they say, the rest was history.
After the botched FG, I smartly decided to pull onto the brakedown lane and sat there for a while.
I was so amped up and pissed, I probably would have caused an accident if I hadn't.........

So you had a mental in the brake down lane? Ironic!

at the beginning of the 4th quarter. Listened to the rest of the game on the radio.

You know, I never thought of it that way. You're right! : )
Me too.
