16 years ago since the SF meltdown-

Sean : 1/5/2019 8:51 pm
I was just reminded of this scrolling through my Twitter feed. I don’t think this is a painful memory (looking back) for a few reasons:

1. It led to Coughlin
2. It led to Eli
3. We got them back in 2011 (a far more significant game).

In a lot of ways this game had a tremendous impact on NYG history. They likely wouldn’t have beaten TB, but getting to the divisional round likely would have changed the timeline for Fassel/Collins.

I remember that offseason was all about special teams & defensive line. I believe we drafted Osi in that 2003 draft. Perhaps the SF loss bled into 2003, but if it did it was a major blessing. We hire Coughlin, draft Eli & the rest is history.
Agghhhh

I still get angry all over again reliving that game

Grrrrrr.
Giants were playing well
GoBlue6599 : 1/5/2019 8:57 pm : link
Maybe I’m just a homer but I think that team could’ve beaten Tampa who had a great D and average O. The Giants offense was on fire Shockey Amani and Tiki were red hot... the refs robbed the Giants
It was a horrible loss...

put all of the sugar on it that you want. We had a decent team that year and then came up with an epic choke in the playoffs.

Yup. Another dumb Giants loss. Them imploding at the end of the games has become so boring as to the point where you are 0% shocked.
I made the mistake of watching this game with my girlfriend
Dave in Hoboken : 1/5/2019 9:24 pm : link
at the time. Boy, was that stupid. She literally never looked at me the same after this day. We had been together for a year at this point, and we broke up 8 months later. I think the seeds to our breakup were planted while watching this game together. I'm not even joking.

Emotional negative reaction I’ve had to a sporting event in my life.

Nothing over the top, but that game had me in a truly weird place for a few weeks. I felt nothing.

I’m thankful that sports don’t have that power over me anymore. It wasn’t enjoyable.

We sure do

have the highest of highs and the lowest of lows as Giants fans. Nothing worse than reaching that part of the meltdown when you KNOW it's a lost cause.
Three reasons for the loss...
EricJ : 1/5/2019 9:27 pm : link
1. mid way through the 3rd, we decide to stop trying to move the ball. We basically started loading the bus to head to the airport.
2. We started playing that too familiar prevent defense
3. The defense also lost all composure. Multiple stupid personal foul calls due to lack of discipline. Virtually no leadership at that time.
16 years...holy shit

The whole team melted down.....
Doomster : 1/5/2019 10:16 pm : link
Shockey dropped the td.....

The DL was gassed chasing Garcia.....

Shaun Williams imploded.....

And the defense allowed not one, but two, two point conversions.....

While we will remember the Junkin faux pas(how many remember he had another bad snap a couple minutes earlier that resulted in a missed fg?), I will never forget the Shockey dropped td in the 3rd quarter, that led to a fg.....we never scored again....that drop just took the air out of the offense...

how they didn't realize they made a correctable error and call the teams back to re-kick.

One of the biggest travesties ever. Refs knew they had screwed up and did absolutely nothing to fix it

Took a world of shit for years thanks to the refs complete and utter incompetence and unwillingness to correct a correctable mistake. Such a shame.
the thing I remember was how quickly
bluepepper : 1/5/2019 11:01 pm : link
the Niners were back in it. 38-14 and like 5 minutes of play later it was a one score game at 38-30. The two point conversions were killers.

I drove home from my uncles house in a silent rage. No radio post game show, no music. Just seething clenched jaw rage.
That game went from drinking for a

That TB team was not that good

next two hours convinced the league would step in and force the teams to replay the kick since it was a correctable error (and there is actually a section in the rulebook that allows it).

Talk about being a delusional fuckface.

I'm still pissed
AcesUp : 1/5/2019 11:42 pm : link
That they didn't call pass interference on that broken play.

I'm not old enough to understand the late 80s teams but thats easily the best Giants team I've seen get bounced from the playoffs. They were good enough to win the conference and SB that year which made the collapse hurt more.
worst loss for me
Banks : 1/6/2019 2:12 am : link
Maybe we would have lost to Tampa, but I didn't sweat playing them. Eagles? Corrupt officiating and 4 Tiki fumbles kept them from being trounced in the season finale. Raiders would have been tough, but I think that would have been a shootout. We had a legit chance at winning the SB.
it still burns me
Allen in CNJ : 1/6/2019 7:27 am : link
that that penalty on the botched FG WASN'T called. Terrible. Still makes me nauseous!

This is what bothers me more than the meltdown itself.
I was pissed Fassel didn't keep everybody on the field

until he exhausted his cause. I still think he left too early because he and the players were embarrassed they let the game get to that point.

May not have gotten the un-timed rekick but my view nevertheless...

Of a fan and a human then. The amount of power a football game had on me was quite pathetic. I have come at least a little way since then.

As for that giant team. It took me a while to realize how flawed that team was. The nineties nyg offenses were so bad that I became happy if the giants offense could put up yards. The 02 team certainly put up some yards but last in the league in red zone scoring. While it's fun to entertain that team's chances TB would have been a horrible matchup for that Giants' team. Could they have won? Sure, anything is possible, but not always likely.
Undisciplined yet exciting was probably the phrase to describe them
Jimmy Googs : 1/6/2019 8:33 am : link
they could win a lot of one on one matchups and make big plays. But they put the ball in harms way too much on OFfense and didn't play enough steady team ball on defense (do your job stuff).

Funny looking back on it
Chris684 : 1/6/2019 9:15 am : link
as an 18 year old kid when sports were literally your world and it was so much more personal.

I carried a print out in my pocket from whatever website it was for about a week, that summarized how badly the refs botched the game and how there should have been one more untimed down for NYG to attempt the FG again. I pulled it out any time anyone who didn’t like the Giants broke my balls.

Not happy how I acted after that game...

I had this thought as well. I kept thinking this can’t be over, someone has to do something, this isn’t right.

Ha ha. I’ve told this story before but what the heck. My now ex gf of 16 years absolutely hated football and the fact that I loved the Giants. When the Giants were up big late in the third she called an congratulated me. I said to her, “You just fucking jinxed them and you did it on purpose. When they lose I’m never going to speak to you again.” And as they say, the rest was history.

at the beginning of the 4th quarter. Listened to the rest of the game on the radio.

After the botched FG, I smartly decided to pull onto the brakedown lane and sat there for a while.

I was so amped up and pissed, I probably would have caused an accident if I hadn't.........

So you had a mental in the brake down lane? Ironic!

28-3 meme... I remember this game and feel their pain. 20 years old watching this in the barracks. Was this the year that Fassel guaranteed the playoffs and took over play calling from Peyton or was that the SB year?
I've never had a more emotional outbreak than after

this game. Started drinking even more heavily as the Niners launched their comeback. At the end, I took another 6 pack, went onto my deck outside in shorts & a tee shirt(It was freezing out w/snow on the ground),screaming for the next hour. My then wife just looked at me through the sliding glass doors, laughing hysterically and that only pissed me off more. One of the worst hangovers I can ever remember! lol
