Buffalo QB Tyree Jackson Declares for NFL Draft

Anakim : 1/6/2019 11:25 am
Apparently he's not transferring after all.

He's going to be a very appealing project for some teams. If you liked Josh Allen last year, you're going to like Tyree Jackson.

Every time I watch games of college QB's declaring, I think; "I can't evaluate this when they have so much time in the pocket." Every time.

I don't know how scouts do it.
These QB's stay flat footed for like 2 seconds in the pocket while they scan the field, then move their feet.
He's VERY raw
Strahan91 : 1/6/2019 11:33 am : link
but has some Patrick Mahomes to his game. He could become a star though with some patience and likely needs to sit and learn for a year.
Intriguing prospect
Zeke's Alibi : 1/6/2019 11:34 am : link
Watched 4/5 Buffalo games this year. He had NFL talent on outside which is huge advantage in MAC. Josh Allen is a better athlete with better arm talent. I thought Jacksons deep ball accuracy left a lot to be desired. Josh Allen actually has pretty good deep ball accuracy its the short and intermediate stuff he needs work on where as Jackson is opposite.
Really a developmental pick
PatersonPlank : 1/6/2019 11:37 am : link
although if we went the developmental route (versus taking more of a known quantity who can step in more quickly), I'd prefer this guy to Lauletta. He's got clear ability, just a matter of if he can grow into being a NFL QB. The raw talent is there.
I loved him after the first game I saw
Zeke's Alibi : 1/6/2019 11:37 am : link
but lost that as season went on. His whiteboard is gonna be huge for him. Does well there and I could see Shurmur buying in, he did like Allen after all. If hes there in 4th could see them making another flier.
The only QB's that I wanted
Jay on the Island : 1/6/2019 11:41 am : link
that were projected to go in rounds 1-3 were Justin Herbert and Tyree Jackson. I know that the Giants don't have a 3rd but they could trade for one and if Jackson is there in round 3 I would be all for a trade up. They would get a year to redshirt Jackson and evaluate him. Using a 3rd on him won't prevent them from going after Tua, Fromm, Herbert etc next year if they aren't happy with Jackson's progress.
Honestly
Jay on the Island : 1/6/2019 11:46 am : link
I would seriously consider taking him in round 2.

Here is a brief highlight video of Jackson. He is the ball of clay that Shurmur would love to develop.

I see a lot of Ben Roethlisberger in Jackson
Jay on the Island : 1/6/2019 11:51 am : link
but Jackson is more athletic.

I agree...if you watch the highlight film he makes only one read and throws. Not going to happen every play in the NFL. However you can see the athleticism he has.
I don’t know

Assuming Eli is back the Giants are the perfect landing spot for Jackson. He would serve as the #3 QB all year and get to learn how to prepare and break down film with Eli.
If you have two 7th round picks, sure, why not.

6′ 7″ and those long legs
shyster : 1/6/2019 1:49 pm : link
scare me.

There's a reason NFL players stay within certain parameters. Beyond those parameters, you're just a bigger target. And longer legs mean more leverage/stress if they get bent the wrong way.

Kevin Knox of Knicks was a very good HS QB from a football family. But he had to switch sports because he was getting too tall for his own safety.

This exactly. He has a tall, gangly, spindly frame, with a very high center of gravity. That makes him a bigger target to hit whose body can be bent in awkward positions. He looks like a taller version of RGII. He's also a complete project that's at least two years away, despite his physical tools.

I agree with whoever said that he's basically making only one read on most throws. That does' mean he can't make multiple reads, but it's something he'll have to learn, along with getting stronger and adjusting to the speed of the game.

I'd pass until day three, and he'll likely be gone by then.

I don't know anything about scouting or Buffalo but watching that clip, almost every throw was outside the numbers or close to it. Doesn't he like going down the middle? Strange.

I still think it would be a mistake to take a QB based primarily upon who Shurmur would like to work with. For all we know, Shurmur will suck enough again to be fired after 2019.
Patriots will draft him..
Eli Wilson : 1/6/2019 8:24 pm : link
to try to erase the memory of the Tyree that ended their perfect season.

Dude looks legit, but WTH do I know.
We've done such a good job

developing QBs the last two years, sure, let's go for another one.
Looks like he has to put his whole body
Boatie Warrant : 1/6/2019 9:21 pm : link
into every throw in that highlight.

Yeah so let's just give up on ever trying again because of another Reese bust and because Lauletta didn't set the world on fire during his rookie season.

Where did I say to "take a QB based primarily upon who Shurmur would like to work with?" I was saying that Shurmur has proven to be good at maximizing QB's strengths and that he hasn't had a raw talent like Jackson. I am all for waiting until 2020 to target Fromm, Tua, etc but Jackson is very intriguing.
Kid like this I'd look for in the 4th
Jim in Forest Hills : 1/7/2019 12:04 pm : link
maybe take two QBs, Jackson and a Jarrett Stidham in the 4th. Let them compete for the next spot.
