Cody Parkey

Can't help but really feel for this kid. By all accounts a really good guy.
He's got to feel awful tonight. I guess I have a soft spot for kickers and for some reason I feel really bad for him tonight. Essentially blew his one big moment. And the Bears fans let him know about it as well.

What will be lost is the choke job the defense had down the stretch.

you stick with a kicker who is pretty poor in the regular season and then showed his lack of clutchness on an otherwise strong team, that falls to the coach or GM.

Parkey nailed the kick down the middle knowing a TO was called. He shanked the next one. That's nothing more than nerves
He just made six figures to kick a ball

They should have replaced him. Santos was available. The left footed kicker who Atl picked up for two weeks was available. Both are much better. They should have known. You canít feel sorry for him because he was hitting the goalposts. One foot wider and he would have been gone. He should not be that close to missing anyhow.

They could not even make a 4th down stop to wrap it up!

Parkey choked, yes! But that "GREAT" Bears defense CHOCKED WORSE !!!

This poor bastard was in trouble from the start. He only made the first one (just after Pederson called timeout) by a yard or two. How often do you see a 43 yarder just make the bar? Definitely had the yips.

I knew he was going to fucking miss.

I do kind of feel bad for him, though - fans are ruthless and I'm sure while the wound is still fresh, a lot of them are going to be really gunning for him and several will undoubtedly cross the line with unnecessary shit like death threats.

It'll be forgotten eventually, but he's probably not going to want to be spending any time watching the news or checking social media any time soon.

Agree with this. As others have said, he failed at his job when it counted most, I donít sympathize too much for that.

But heíll likely endure an avalanche of abuse from some asshole fans, most of them drunk losers on their couches. Like you said, doing things including making death threats against him and his family and crazy shit like that.

I donít wish that on anyone.

If he was only playing the Giants. He would have bounced the ball off both uprights and the crossbar amd it would have been good with room to spare.

Excellent rookie year. IR with a groin in year two. Then gets hit in the head with a pre-game punt while trying to reclaim his job from Sturgis, and suffers a concussion. Has bounced around since, and might be done now.
Hard for me to understand

must've lost money on this game, because the vitriol directed at someone trying his best to do his job is pretty intense. Here's hoping no one here drops a pencil at work or forgets to edit that weekly report for the boss on Friday.

Insane contract for a consummate JAG. He wasnít even very good in Miami last year, kicking mostly in good weather. Nice FG percentage, padded by 14/14 inside 40. Thatís misleading too, because he missed three PATs. His kickoffs were short, and his only 50+ FG was in the opener. No idea what the Bears saw that induced them to guarantee all of Parkeyís money through 2019.
C'mon now..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/7/2019 10:09 am : link
his job is to make kicks, especially ones that have a high liklihood of being made.

If my job is to protect pencils and I drop one that causes it to shatter, costing my company a chance to win a contract, I might get fired and certainly would take some blame.

If that weekly report is the deciding factor in investing $10M and I don't edit it and the company makes a bad decision - I'm probably at risk of getting fired.

Is this really a tough concept to understand?
He's by all accounts a good dude

The fact that it's self-inflicted is irrelevant. I feel bad for good people who feel bad. Basic stuff. Doesn't mean I want him to be my kicker.

That's my take as well.

Yes Parkey is a paid pro and his job is to make that kick but any Bears fan knows he was shaky all year and couldn't have had much confidence in him in that spot.

No so for their D and I'd bet most felt their D wouldn't give up a late game winning TD drive at home.

Myself I'd be more upset with something I never expected to happen than something I knew had a good possibility of happening.
The D only gave up 16 points
jeff57 : 1/7/2019 11:52 am : link
The offense let them down more.

arcarsenal : 1/7/2019 12:00 pm : link
I believe the Bears only had 10 men on the field on the play where Goedert scored.

They also handled the clock poorly at the end of the game. No one seemed to know what the plan was and there was a lot of scrambling. Nagy didn't seem ready for it.
The Bears..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/7/2019 12:04 pm : link
gave up the late score, but they were in position to win the game.

If that's the giants, I'm irate at the kicker right now. That's a kick that is made 90% of the time by the average NFL PK.

Put it this way, if Rosas misses that kick, are we blaming the D? Hell, people still think the Norwood miss was a chip shot, when the guy was 1-7 lifetime on grass over 45 yards

This was a gimme.

No I get that but Rosas was near perfect this year and no doubt I'd be pissed and blaming him. If it was Rosas of last year who was shaky, I'd still blame him but I would've had no confidence in him making the kick to begin with and been more pissed we didn't have someone better to use in that spot.

I can't imagine many Bears fans having faith in Parkey in that spot last night so while rightfully pissed, they had to be at least expecting it.

In either case if we had the #1 D in the league, I'd be really pissed at giving up that drive. Sure kickers are paid to do their jobs but any Bears fans had to have more faith in that D than their kicker and has to feel completely let down by them for giving up that drive.

I'm just speaking for myself but I'd be more upset and let down at the D for blind siding me than a shaky kicker doing what he's done all year. I'm not exonerating Parkey as like I said he's paid to make that kick, but it wasn't like I had confidence he would.

Clearly though there's enough blame to go around including their O not doing much in the 1st half especially.

I definitely..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/7/2019 12:23 pm : link
agree that Parkey shouldn't have even been on their roster.

That's a mismanagement issue. With the D being so good, you have to sign a reliable vet, even if the guy has limited range.
Sports is a zero sum game
cosmicj : 1/7/2019 12:32 pm : link
If Parkey loses his job, some other lucky person will take it.

But you still have to feel compassion for him as a human being. I've been embarrassed before but not in front of millions of people. Must be absolutely soul crushing.
That's pretty silly to blame the D not the K
MetsAreBack : 1/7/2019 12:36 pm : link
the D faced a very good, defending champion offense (at pretty much full health) and gave up 300 total yards. The final drive was only 60 yards.. it was a short field.

They also stopped a crucial 2 point conversion after the 4th down play, giving their offense and kicker a chance to win thereafter.

Special teams then proceeds to give the Bears great field position. Trubisky to his credit throws some dimes to Allen Robinson... its on Nagy for screwing up clock mgmt (why in hell do so many coaches still suck at this??????) and on the kicker for missing a chip shot.

And i dont care if its tipped.. last i checked its the kickers job to get air under it unless we're talking about a 50+ yarder in which case you do need to live with lower trajectory.

If you're referring to me I think your reading comp needs to improve. I clearly didn't just blame the D. I only said I would feel more let down by them and more pissed at them than a shaky kicker who I had no confidence in. I also said I wasn't exonerating Parkey.

I don't agree 60 yds for a TD is a "short field" as it wasn't like they recovered a fumble in Bears territory but to each their own. The #1 D in the league at home has to be able to keep them from scoring a TD on that drive.
I don't know..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/7/2019 12:53 pm : link
if I agree the D "has" to stop them.

If they had an adequate kicker, it wouldn't have mattered.
That 4 year contract they gave him really came back to haunt them
Deejboy : 1/7/2019 1:49 pm : link
$15 million with $9 mill guaranteed. That is why they never thought about replacing him during the year. It still means they probably won't cut him since it would cost them $5.2 mill. It's cheaper to keep him than cut him. They will have to bring in another kicker to compete with him which is wasted money at a spot you don't want to waste money.

True but wouldn't you also expect your D who is #1 in the league to stop them or have a lot of confidence they would stop them? I know I would on both especially at home.

Not having an adequate kicker just compounds for me how important it was for them to make the stop and why I felt they had to stop them. I would've rathered have the game in my D's hands than a shaky kicker, but unfortunately for the Bears they both failed in the biggest of spots.

Yeah, he missed. It's his job and he f*cked up.
